Cloud computing systems are the backbone of our technology needs in everyday life and are one of the major electric energy consumers globally. Any improvement that can be added to the energy efficiency of these vast systems constitutes a big gain worldwide in our never-ending battle with climate change and pollution. This paper proposes a new algorithm for task scheduling in Cloud systems based on the bin packing algorithm using a greedy implementation in conjunction with an optimization algorithm for resource task execution. By executing tasks in as much time as possible without impacting customer experience too much due to latency and by using resources at close to 100% in order to use the minimum number of servers we can achieve on average a 3.79% increase in energy efficiency. On top of that, our algorithm is robust to extreme variations of incoming task deadline distributions.

Future Flight Deck Design: Implementation of a Touchscreen as Flight Inceptor for Single Pilot Operation

There is a trend leading to progressively "de-crewing" aircraft by implementing innovative technology on the flight deck. Currently, touchscreens can combine the input and output functions of different systems. However, it does not yet serve as an inceptor to replace the sidestick or control column for aircraft manoeuvres. The aim of this study is to examine the potential of a touchscreen as a flight inceptor compared with a traditional sidestick and gamepad. This research recruited 51 pilots who interacted with three inceptors for both an instrument landing with disturbance and one without disturbance using the Future System Simulator. The findings demonstrated that both system usability and pilots’ situation awareness of touchscreen inceptor were significantly inferior to those of traditional sidesticks and gamepads. Compared to the sidestick and gamepad, the touchscreen provided a poorer situation awareness with the highest supply and demand. In addition, the performance of all inceptors was significantly influenced by disturbance. There is still a long way to go for certification of a touchscreen as an inceptor on the future flight deck. This research showed that even though the touchscreen inceptor scored the lowest on both SUS and SART, the majority of pilots agreed that the touchscreen inceptor provided a better attentional supply in challenging disturbance circumstances. There is a potential that the emerging touchscreen as an inceptor may develop further along with human-system integration flight deck design. It will enable a single pilot to safely operate a highly automated aircraft in the future. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The paper presents the implementation aspects of a visual inspection system dedicated as part of the advanced control in Flat Glass Manufacturing Industry. The system has to identify and to provide a measurement of the mechanical no-uniformity of the glass ribbon before the cutting process in order to maximize the output of the manufacturing process. The necessity of developing the presented system is pointed out by being imposed for achieving an advance automation level. The image processing techniques and algorithms used have to provide results with a high reliability even in conditions of a very large variety of the types of image distortions necessary to be identified. The development of the proposed visual inspection system is coming with the approach of modified Hough transform technique for processing the images and is obtaining a high robustness of the results.

LiDAR-camera extrinsic calibration (LCEC) is the core for data fusion in computer vision. Existing methods typically rely on customized calibration targets or fixed scene types, lacking the flexibility to handle variations in sensor data and environmental contexts. This paper introduces EdO-LCEC, the first environment-driven, online calibration approach that achieves human-like adaptability. Inspired by the human perceptual system, EdO-LCEC incorporates a generalizable scene discriminator to actively interpret environmental conditions, creating multiple virtual cameras that capture detailed spatial and textural information. To overcome cross-modal feature matching challenges between LiDAR and camera, we propose dual-path correspondence matching (DPCM), which leverages both structural and textural consistency to achieve reliable 3D-2D correspondences. Our approach formulates the calibration process as a spatial-temporal joint optimization problem, utilizing global constraints from multiple views and scenes to improve accuracy, particularly in sparse or partially overlapping sensor views. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that EdO-LCEC achieves state-of-the-art performance, providing reliable and precise calibration across diverse, challenging environments. Due to the vagueness and uncertainties due to the coronavirus, it is crucial to implement the standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the World Health Organization and the authorities. Therefore an effective control system is required that minimizes the vagueness and uncertainties of people who are on the front line during the period of this pandemic checking the entering persons in an indoor area where it is necessary to maintain a distance of six feet from one another to avoid the spread of coronavirus. In this research work, a robust and efficient system has been proposed that takes protective mask and feverishness values as input and applies them using the fuzzy logic algorithm. If these input values are according to the rules defined in the system, then the door will open as an output. Otherwise, the door will not open. It is, finally, analyzing the output values. This fuzzy model had been implemented using a microcontroller. The genuine difference in the duty cycle of the microcontroller’s output pulse was measured using a 100 MHz digital oscilloscope. Our proposed system was compared with different systems reported in the literature. This work reduces the human effort as well as the negligence of people and builds up the management system without the labor in a mint.

Reduced Network Cumulative Constraint Violation for Distributed Bandit Convex Optimization under Slater’s Condition

This paper studies the distributed bandit convex optimization problem with time-varying inequality constraints, where the goal is to minimize network regret and cumulative constraint violation. To calculate network cumulative constraint violation, existing distributed bandit online algorithms solving this problem directly use the clipped constraint function to replace its original constraint function. However, the use of the clipping operation renders Slater’s condition (i.e, there exists a point that strictly satisfies the inequality constraints at all iterations) ineffective to achieve reduced network cumulative constraint violation. To tackle this challenge, we propose a new distributed bandit online primal–dual algorithm. If local loss functions are convex, we show that the proposed algorithm establishes an O(T max{c,1−c})network regret bound and an O(T 1−c/2) network cumulative constraint violation bound, where T is the total number of iterations and c ∈ (0, 1) is a user-defined trade-off parameter. When Slater’s condition holds, the network cumulative constraint violation bound is reduced to O(T 1−c). In addition, if local loss functions are strongly convex, for the case where strongly convex parameters are unknown, the network regret bound is reduced to O(T1−c), and the network cumulative constraint violation bound is O(T1−c/2) and O(T1−c) without and with Slater’s condition, respectively. For the case where strongly convex parameters are known, the network regret bound is further reduced to O)(log(T)), and the network cumulative constraint violation bound is reduced to O(log(T)T) and O(log(T)) without and with Slater’s condition, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is among the first to establish reduced (network) cumulative constraint violation bounds for (distributed) bandit convex optimization with time-varying constraints under Slater’s condition. In this paper we propose an original distributed control framework for DC microgrids. We first formulate the (optimal) control objectives as an aggregative game suitable for the energy trading market. Then, based on duality, we analyze the equivalent distributed optimal condition for the proposed aggregative game and design a distributed control scheme to solve it. By interconnecting the DC microgrid and the designed distributed control system in a power preserving way, we steer the DC microgrid’s state to the desired optimal equilibrium, satisfying a predefined set of local and coupling constraints. Finally, based on singular perturbation system theory, we analyze the convergence of the closed-loop system. The simulation results show excellent performance of the proposed control framework.

This paper presents a comparative study between the commonly used switches (IGBT, MOSFET, SiC and GaN) for power inverters of electric vehicles. A 400 V, three-phase inverter system simulation test is implemented using LTspice and the conducted emissions are compared to variant CISPR standards and switching frequencies in order to show the possible interferences with the other car equipment.

Currently, the use of unmanned vehicles for the delivery of goods is becoming a trend in many areas of human activity. At the same time, it is necessary to solve the problem of the integrity of the cargo because of its possible fluctuations. The paper deals with the problem of delivering cargo attached to a 4-motor UAV on a rigid cable. A control system is needed to achieve the UAV equilibrium position that can compensate for significant mismatches in the XY coordinate plane. A combination of two control algorithms is proposed for solving this problem, one of which provides a given position in the horizontal plane at small mismatch angles and the second at large mismatch angles. The first controller uses the PID controller algorithm with the corresponding optimal setting of its parameters, and the second one uses the bang-bang control scheme. An additional controller is used to coordinate these controllers, which ensures their timely switching. Some simulation is also proposed.
