Activation maps of convolutional neural networks as a tool for brain degeneration tracking in early diagnosis of dementia in Parkinson's disease based on magnetic resonance imaging

Identification of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) patients at risk for development of dementia is crucial for early intervention. However, diagnosing dementia in PD patients requires advanced, time-consuming and expensive imaging techniques (such as DaT-SCAN-SPECT). The study aims to prove the usefulness of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for the identification of brain areas related to the progress of cognitive impairment by using standard Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) sequences. T1&T2 sequences of 18 patients were used in the pilot study. Activation maps were generated, and the brain regions most involved in the classification process were identified, showing areas potentially significant in the diagnosis of cognitive impairment severity. The cerebellum was proven significant for distinguishing the above-mentioned classes in relative cerebellum volume (ANOVA p-value=0.0038 with large effect size η2=0.5254) and folding (p-value=0.0031, η2=0.5357), which is consistent with reports by other authors. Our analysis demonstrates that convolutional neural networks combined with a proper image preprocessing pipeline could be used for feature extraction in MRI sequences and can successfully support the identification of disease-specific abnormalities of the brain image. © 2021, CC BY.

In this paper, we derive recursive algorithms for calculating the determinant of the generalized Vandermonde matrix. The main advantage of the recursive algorithms is the fact that the computational complexity of the presented algorithm is better than calculating the determinant by means of classical methods, developed for the general matrices. The results of this article do not require any symbolic calculations and therefore can be performed by a numerical algorithm implemented in a specialized (like Matlab or Mathematica) or general purpose programming language (C/ C++/ Java/ Pascal/ Fortran etc). The article concerns modern soft magnetic materials made by rapid solidification and subsequent ultra-rapid annealing. Due to the lower amount of non-magnetic elements, higher magnetisation is possible. Unfortunately, the lack of those elements causes difficulty during isothermal nanocrystallisation operation, being crucial from the final product properties point of *** of isothermal heat treatment, ultra-rapid annealing is implemented. It reflects in materials with good magnetic softness and higher possible magnetisation *** amorphous alloy with Fe75.3Ni10B14Cu0.7 chemical composition was heat treated between cooper blocks at 773K in the range of 1-60s. To study structure evolution, we brought XRD, DSC, Flash DSC, Mössbauer spectroscopy, TEM, and HRTEM techniques to *** on the DSC results, we estimated the minimum heating speed to obtain optimal structure at 6000K/min. The Mössbauer results allowed us to study annealing time-dependent local atomic ordering in the amorphous state. A comparison of X-Ray and synchrotron diffraction results drove us to the conclusion that X-Ray measurements are sufficient to determine the material structure. TEM shows the formation of α-Fe crystallites even after an annealing time of 0.5s. The increase in annealing time leads to an increase in the crystalline phase volume fraction and growth of α-Fe crystallite size. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Queuing theory has been extensively used in the modelling and performance analysis of cloud computing systems. The phenomenon of the task (or request) reneging, that is, the dropping of requests from the request queue often occur in cloud computing systems, and it is important to consider it when developing performance evaluations models for cloud computing infrastructures. Majority of studies in the performance evaluation of cloud computing data centres with the use of queuing theory do not consider the fact that the tasks could be removed from queue without being serviced. The removal of tasks from the queue could be due to the user impatience, execution deadline expiration, security reasons, or as an active queue management strategy. The reneging could be correlated in nature, that is, if a request is dropped (or reneged) at any time epoch, and then there is a probability that a request may or may not be dropped at the next time epoch. This kind of dropping (or reneging) of requests is referred to as correlated request reneging. In this paper we have modelled a cloud computing infrastructure with correlated request reneging using queuing theory. An M/M/1/N queuing model with correlated reneging has been used to study the performance analysis of the load balancing server of a cloud computing system. The steady-state as well as the transient performance analyses have been carried out. Important measures of performance like a vera ge queue size, average delay, probability of task blocking, and the probability of no waiting in the queue are studied. Finally, some comparisons are performed which describe the effect of correlated task reneging over simple exponential reneging. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

The structures present in amyloids show the presence of common features in the form of high presence of beta-structure, parallel orientation of chains in fibrils, which results in significant proportion of hydrogen bonds in stabilization of amyloid fibril structures. Despite these common features, fibrils show variation from the point of view of ordering the distribution of hydrophobic interactions. The purpose of the analysis presented here is to reveal the specificity of selected functional amyloids in relation to amyloids that cause pathological phenomena. The distinguishing feature of functional amyloids is their micelle-like structure in contrast to pathological amyloids. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Over time, the increased use of the Internet has led to the widespread adoption of web and cloud applications. More and more applications are coming to the aid of persons or companies to make their work easier. A Service Level Agreement (SLA) gathers information about all contracted services and their expected reliability in a single document and plays a very important role when it comes to IT (Information Technology) sales. This paper examines the extent to which the SLA is complied with through a series of specific reports and graphs. The usefulness of this application is to get an overview of web services to know the frequency of situations unforeseen and the moments when they deviated from the operation in good conditions. © 2020 IEEE.

TextBenDS: A generic textual data benchmark for distributed systems

Extracting top-k keywords and documents using weighting schemes are popular techniques employed in text mining and machine learning for different analysis and retrieval tasks. The weights are usually computed in the data preprocessing step, as they are costly to update and keep track of all the modifications performed on the dataset. Furthermore, computation errors are introduced when analyzing only subsets of the dataset. Therefore, in a Big Data context, it is crucial to lower the runtime of computing weighting schemes, without hindering the analysis process and the accuracy of the machine learning algorithms. To address this requirement for the task of top-k keywords and documents, it is customary to design benchmarks that compare weighting schemes within various configurations of distributed frameworks and database management systems. Thus, we propose a generic document-oriented benchmark for storing textual data and constructing weighting schemes (TextBenDS). Our benchmark offers a generic data model designed with a multidimensional approach for storing text documents. We also propose using aggregation queries with various complexities and selectivities for constructing term weighting schemes, that are utilized in extracting top-k keywords and documents. We evaluate the computing performance of the queries on several distributed environments set within the Apache Hadoop ecosystem. Our experimental results provide interesting insights. As an example, MongoDB proves to have the best overall performance, while Spark's execution time remains almost the same, regardless of the weighting schemes. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Chimera states are dynamical states where regions of synchronous trajectories coexist with incoherent ones. A significant amount of research has been devoted to studying chimera states in systems of identical oscillators, nonlocally coupled through pairwise interactions. Nevertheless, there is increasing evidence, also supported by available data, that complex systems are composed of multiple units experiencing many-body interactions that can be modeled by using higher-order structures beyond the paradigm of classic pairwise networks. In this work we investigate whether phase chimera states appear in this framework, by focusing on a topology solely involving many-body, nonlocal, and nonregular interactions, hereby named nonlocal d-hyperring, (d+1) being the order of the interactions. We present the theory by using the paradigmatic Stuart-Landau oscillators as node dynamics, and we show that phase chimera states emerge in a variety of structures and with different coupling functions. For comparison, we show that, when higher-order interactions are “flattened” to pairwise ones, the chimera behavior is weaker and more elusive.
