Exponential Stabilization of Discrete Nonlinear Time-Varying Systems

We consider a discrete nonlinear control time-varying system x(k + 1) = f(k, x(k), u(k)), k ∈ ℕ, x ∈ ℝ n , u ∈ ℝ r . A control process of this system is a pair (x(k), u(k)) k ∈ N consisting of a control (u(k)) k∈N and some solution (x(k)) k∈N of the system with this control. We assume that the control process is defined for all k ∈ N. We have obtained sufficient conditions for uniform and non-uniform (with respect to the initial moment) exponential stabilization of the control process with any pregiven decay of rate. Exponential convergence to zero of the deviation of both the state vector and the control vector is guaranteed. The result is based on the property of uniform complete controllability (in the sense of Kalman) for a system of linear approximation.

This paper presents the evolution and development trends of the distributed control systems (DCS) implemented in the Electrical Power Systems, highlighting the impact of the modern versus traditional DCS systems. The principles of the modern DCS systems presented in this paper can be found implemented in Romania in the Transmission and Distribution energy sector, implemented by the Romanian Transmission and System Operator CNTEE Transelectrica SA and, as well as the electricity distribution operators like Electrica, EoN and CEZ.

Background and Objective: Videodermoscopy is the gold standard in melanoma diagnosis. A new research trend aims to support specialists’ work by automating this examination method, but most research focuses on developing detectors to replace dermatologists. Our study aims to present a novel idea which focuses on supporting the examination process instead of completely automating it. Instead of detecting and classifying all naevi each time, our approach focuses on full screening at the first visit and shortening the examination at subsequent visits. During the following examinations, images of all naevi are taken by supporting staff and are compared with previously taken images using feature-matching or co-registration-based algorithms. An unmatched naevus needs to be checked by the specialist, meaning that a new naevus appeared or an old one had changed. Methods: The similarity between images (ranging from 0% to 100%) was obtained with characteristic points searching (ORB method) and co-registration-based methods. No dataset presenting changes of naevi over time exists, so augmenting the images from PH2 and HAM10000 datasets was required to simulate the time flow. Results: The decision bound was set, so the true positive rate of each method was equal to 99%, giving the specificity of ORB equal to 97% (PH2) and 89% (HAM10000). Similar tests were performed using a co-registration algorithm giving specificity equal to 23% (PH2) and 19% (HAM10000). Conclusions: We believe that employing our approach will allow supporting staff to perform screening without experts’ help, decreasing examination time and costs and increasing the accessibility of dermoscopic examinations.

This paper presents a practical implementation of a modern DCS in energy sector, applicable for electric power transmission and distributions substations. When dealing with aging infrastructure the reward from investing in modern automation solution can be substantial, with benefits such increasing productivity, cost savings, safety operations, scalable solution and a better integration in the modern IT facilities. The modern DCS systems evolved into a flexible and scalable automation solutions, which make them mandatory in the actual competitive energy business environment. Comparing to PLCs and traditional DCS, the modern DCS systems are designed to provide automation solution in a safe, reliable and cost-effectively manner. The main goal of this article is to present and suggest an optimal DCS design and functional solutions taking into consideration customer requirements, international and customer applicable norms, budget constraint, hardware and software limitations, integration of existing equipment, cybersecurity and low impact of the monitored and controlled process for extension and future growth. The principles presented in this paper can be found implemented in Romania mainly in the electric power transmission substations, owned by Romanian Transmission and System Operator CNTEE Transelectrica SA.

This paper presents a practical laboratory for student education purpose in Distributed control Systems, with focus on applications for high voltage transmission substations. The monitoring, control and protection part is realized with a software platform and IED devices manufactured by AREVA T&D France, while the primary equipment, like circuit breakers and disconnectors are simulated with latched relays. The system architecture and communication network are reproducing a real one usually used in transmission substations. The implementation of this laboratory, both through specific laboratory works and experiments, makes the theoretical part to be supported by a practical experience, resulting in future graduates with added value in the electric power industry.

In the last few decades, the use of power converters has become essential in the smart grid environment. Consequently, this leads to the presence of a high-level of conducted electromagnetic interference between the smart grid elements. This paper studies the effect of two power converter modulation techniques: conventional fixed-frequency modulation and spread-spectrum modulation, on the performance of the Power Line Communication (PLC) signal. The paper presents a practical implementation of the system and discusses the results for different operating scenarios.

This work presents method of identification of the functional parameters of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using artificial neural network (ANN). The VCO under test is excited with a selected stimuli and the ANN is trained by the VCO response in time-domain. Investigated VCO is a mixed-signal circuit, therefore spread of circuit parameters (tolerance) is modelled by Monte-Carlo analysis. Existence of a circuit failures, modelled as spot defects, is also taken into consideration. Additionally, a genetic algorithm (GA) is used to minimize number of circuit response samples. The goal is shortening of data acquisition and processing time during circuit testing, as having significant influence on final manufacturing cost. The proposed method enables shortening test time of the VCO, together with high efficiency of functional parameters identification. © 2018

The advantages of graph neural networks (GNNs) in leveraging the graph topology of wireless networks have drawn increasing attentions. This paper studies the GNN-based learning approach for the sum-rate maximization in multiple-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) networks subject to the users’ individual data rate requirements and the power budget of the base station. By modeling the MU-MISO network as a graph, a GNN-based architecture named CRGAT is proposed to directly map the channel state information to the beamforming vectors. The attention-enabled aggregation and the residual-assisted combination are adopted to enhance the learning capability and avoid the oversmoothing issue. Furthermore, a novel activation function is proposed for the constraint due to the limited power budget at the base station. The CRGAT is trained in an unsupervised learning manner with two proposed loss functions. An evaluation method is proposed for the learning-based approach, based on which the effectiveness of the proposed CRGAT is validated in comparison with several convex optimization and learning based approaches. Numerical results are provided to reveal the advantages of the CRGAT including the millisecond-level response with limited optimality performance loss, the scalability to different number of users and power budgets, and the adaptability to different system settings. The paper proposes a cheap hybrid ground-air sensor network for environmental parameter measurements. The ground sensors are grouped into clusters, each cluster having several sensory nodes connected to a cluster head that sends the relevant data to the aerial, mobile nodes - unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Thus, using optimal trajectories, the UAVs are used both for measuring directly environmental parameters, as well as for collecting data from ground sensors. The authors present the modules' implementation of the hybrid system: ordinary sensory nodes, cluster heads, ground control stations, communication modems and UAV platforms. Finally, the performances of the realized hybrid network are analyzed from multiple points of view: energy consumption, time, and data acquisition efficiency.

Deep learning (DL) has shown great potential for enhancing channel state information (CSI) feedback in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, a subject currently under study by the 3GPP standards body. Digital twins (DTs) have emerged as an effective means to generate site-specific datasets for training DL-based CSI feedback models. However, most existing studies rely solely on simulations, leaving the effectiveness of DTs in reducing DL training costs yet to be validated through realistic experimental setups. This paper addresses this gap by establishing a real-world (RW) environment and corresponding virtual channels using ray tracing with replicated 3D models and accurate antenna properties. We evaluate whether models trained in DT environments can effectively operate in RW scenarios and quantify the benefits of online learning (OL) for performance enhancement. Results show that a dedicated DT remains essential even with OL to achieve satisfactory performance in RW scenarios. © 2012 IEEE.
