Generalized adaptive notch filters (GANFs) are used for identification/tracking of quasi-periodically varying dynamic systems and can be considered an extension, to the system case, of classical adaptive notch filters. The tracking properties of a GANF algorithm depend on two adaptation gains, which should be chosen so as to match the degree of nonstationarity of the identified system. First, an analytical study of a tracking performance of a real-valued GANF algorithm is presented. Then, based on the obtained theoretical results, a self-optimizing algorithm is proposed, capable of automatic tuning of its adaptation gains. The paper is an extension of the previous work devoted to complex-valued GANF algorithms.

In this article, the problem of multivariable data autoregressive identification is approached, in view of prediction. Such data are especially provided by natural phenomena with geographical distribution, but could also be acquired from concentrated systems with several outputs, like medical records of one or more patients. Presumably, data are generated by the same source and exhibit more or less correlations to each other. Instead of processing each data set as an independent time series, the whole data block can be seen as the reaction of some open MIMO system to unknown stimuli. Therefore, modeling and forecasting of system behavior can rely on multi-dimensional ARMAX models. Optimal structural indices of MIMO-ARMAX model are found by means of an evolutionary strategy: particle swarm optimization.

Interprocessor communication is an important factor in determining the performance scalability of parallel systems. The communication requirements of a parallel application can be quantified to understand its communication pattern and communication pattern similarities among applications can be determined. This is essential for the efficient mapping of applications on parallel systems and leads to better interprocessor communication implementation among others. This paper proposes a methodology to compare the communication pattern of distributed-memory programs. Communication correlation coefficient quantifies the degree of similarity between two applications based on the communication metrics selected to characterize the applications. To capture the network topology requirements, we extract the communication graph of each applications and quantities this similarity. We apply this methodology to four applications in the NAS parallel benchmark suite and evaluate the communication patterns by studying the effects of varying problem size and the number of logical processes (LPs).

Internet-based assessment has been recently introduced into many courses taught at Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland. We have started with summative assessment (examination) and non-obligatory formative assessment. The next step was the implementation of obligatory formative assessment for some groups of students. In the paper the applied forms of formative assessment are thoroughly described. We present the method, obtained results, and students attitude to different forms of assessment. Students have been surveyed on various aspects of web-based assessment - in particular, on the methods of cheating. We discuss the range of cheating, ways of cheating and precautions to be taken. The authors' experience and findings may be helpful for teachers applying Internet for students' assessment.

The Circuit Theory course at Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland has been recently converted into blended model and various forms of webbased formative and summative assessment have been implemented [1], [2]. In the paper the development of close-ended computer Assisted exam has been presented. The new repository has been created based on the results of previous exams. The detailed statistical analysis of the exam results has been performed with respect to students' outcomes as well as particular questions performance. We present the results of students' survey on web-based assessment and the comments of the staff with respect to new idea of examination. The paper enlightens the numerous advantages of computer Assisted exam and provides some tips for teachers, especially in case of technical university courses.
