Enterprise control applications are becoming more and more complex, exploiting distributed object technology in multi-tier architectures. For educational purposes, the development of a manufacturing control laboratory that may emphasize the new control techniques and the overall integration of the system activities is a complex and challenging task. In the paper, an enterprise application solution that integrates the ERP concept in three-tier architecture with a Flexible Manufacturing System is presented. It contains modularized, distributed subsystems in configurable and maintainable software. Starting from the customer order, to planned order dispatch, the ERP main components and the information flow within the system is presented. The software architecture contains the ERP components that are implemented using Enterprise Java Beans, deployed in a J2EE application server. It enables transactions with the business environment, shop-floor system and the database. The application is conceptually designed and analyzed using a visual model developed in Unified Modelling Language.

Seamless simulation and rendering of realistic natural environments has the goals of modeling the terrain and placing large groups of plants in a manner that would generate a scene similar to what a viewer would see in real life. The placement of plants is derived automatically from real land cover classification (LCC) data which describes each area on the map as a single vegetation type. This work presents a method for solving the problem of plant distribution in transition areas between different vegetation classes by using the concept of linear diffusion in an arbitrary direction. In practice this direction can be determined by different climatic factors. Our proposed implementation can accurately process a high number of neighboring areas in real-time by using parallel processing on the graphics processing unit.

Evolutionary Algorithms are representative as a research field in continuous development and a permanent source of new ideas. In order to minimize a function, some algorithms such as Genetic Algorithms, the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm and Evolutionary Hybrid Algorithms were investigated in this paper. Also, in order to accelerate the search of an optimal solution a new hybrid algorithm based on the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm is proposed. The tests showed that the proposed algorithm tends to reach an optimal solution faster than other algorithms.

The analogue implementation of spiking neural networks have the critical advantage of parallel operation and information transmission. The implementation in hardware of the synaptic weights and learning mechanisms represents a challenging task. A cheap and efficient method to store the weights of analogue SNN which benefits from real time adjustment represents the capacitors. However, the main disadvantage of this method represents the leakage currents which make the synaptic weights volatile. This paper proposes and evaluates experimentally a method for refreshing the weights of the analogue synapses by rhythmic activation of the neurons. The results show that the long term memory of analogue neurons improves significantly if the neurons are activated at certain periods of time. Moreover, in order to obtain non-volatile memory the refresh rate can be determined as a function of the initial value and the variation of the synaptic weights.

Evolutionary algorithms have become popular in the recent years as a general, simple, and robust technique that can be used when other optimization methods cannot be applied. Presently, there are a number of evolutionary/genetic algorithm libraries publicly available; however, they are not specifically designed for multiagent systems. The framework described in this paper addresses this problem and presents a general architecture for evolutionary optimization aimed to be used by agents in a multiagent system implemented in the JADE framework inspired from the island model of parallel genetic algorithms. The characteristics of evolutionary algorithms that are more appropriate for use in a distributed, cooperative multiagent environment are also identified.

With the growth of the Internet, recommendations have become a fact of life and there is a big competition between companies to get as much market share as possible. This is achievable not only through fast to market solutions but also by constantly providing high quality services. Considering the speed of current technological advancements, it is impossible to conceive a world without some form of prediction. Traditionally, recommendations have been computed using the collaborative filtering method, but the growth of available information has pushed research into other directions such as content based, demographic based, utility-based, knowledge-based and hybrids. This paper provides an introduction to collaborative filtering and content based methods, describing the underlying concepts, and discusses possible improvements using overclassification. Individual results are presented and then compared with the overclassification approach.

As the Industrial Internet of Things evolves, ever more data acquisition devices are integrated inside factories, silos, agriculture facilities, industrial facilities, cars and many other applications. One of the most common measured parameter, that also creates the most problems in specific applications, is temperature. There is an abundance of analog temperature transducers, available for engineers and researchers, with varying precision, temperature range, linearity, power consumption, and cost. Besides invasive temperature sensors and transducers, in recent years microwave based temperature measurement methods have been developed. The current paper presents one method of reading thermocouples without the need of a high resolution ADC or digital calculation of complex polynomial functions. The article is focused on the linearization circuit, measurement results, errors and presents a short application using NI WSN nodes as part of IIoT.
