In a complex real-time application, each module can be independently developed, therefore, different processes need to communicate with each other safely and as quickly as possible. This paper proposes a flexible and efficient solution for handling the inter-process communication and for helping the programmer to quickly create modules that use the producer-consumer paradigm in order to streamline the data flow between the different processes. The communication is performed by means of a first-in first-out circular buffer which is kept in a shared memory area in order to allow quick data transfer between modules. The proposed solution allows the development of complex modularized applications suitable for real-time data processing. We describe the use of the proposed framework in a practical setup practice to as part of a software synchronization mechanism between two acquisition devices: a video capture device and an inertial measurement unit.

Simplified mathematical models that can describe the real behavior of a building with relative small errors can provide useful information about the best operational methods of the HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) systems, energy demand for heating and cooling, etc. We developed a simplified mathematical model for computing the energy demand for heating and optimized it with a Genetic Algorithm, in order to minimize the error between the model and real data. The tested period (a month) showed that the optimization method is suitable for this type of applications and the relative error was 0.14 kWh.

In this paper a new pupil detection algorithm based on RANSAC procedure is presented. Unlike other similar algorithms reported in the literature, the proposed algorithm provides higher accuracy, low running time and operates properly in noise conditions and for variable illumination. This algorithm is used in the field of assistive technology in order to communicate with neuromotor disabled people by detecting their gaze direction, and can easily be adapted for other applications, such as PC control using eye-gaze detection.

The article presents the material type from which the conductors of the overhead power lines are produced influences on the size of the overhang and the tension. The aim of the calculations was to present the benefits of the mechanics of the cable resulting from the type of cable used. The analysis was performed for two types of cables: aluminium with steel core and aluminium with composite core, twice span power line section. 10 different conductor-to-strand coil, wind, icing, and temperature variations were included in the calculations. The string description was made by means of a chain curve, while the horizontal component H of the tension force was determined using the bisection method. The loads were collected in accordance with applicable Eurocode.

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the laser processing on the properties of electro-spark coatings. The properties were assessed by analyzing the coating microstructure, X-ray radiation, microhardness, corrosion resistance, porosity and tribological tests. In addition, the paper presents the results of measurements and analysis of electrical pulse during ESD. The tests were carried out on WC-Cu coating (the anode) obtained by electro spark deposition over carbon steel C45 (the cathode) and molten with a laser beam. The coatings were deposited by means of the EIL-8A and they were laser treated with the Nd:YAG. The tests show that the laser-treated electro-spark deposited WC-Cu coatings are characterized by lower hardness and friction force, higher seizure resistance, roughness. The laser treatment process causes the homogenization of the chemical composition, the structure refinement and the healing of microcracks and pores of the electro-spark deposited coatings. Laser treated electro-spark deposited coatings are likely to be applied in sliding friction pairs and as protective coatings.

In this study, the dynamics and control aspects of a spherical rolling robot's lateral motion are investigated. An approximate, simplified to a single plane, mathematical model is derived using Lagrange equations to check stability of the system. Utilizing the fusion of sensor data, a precise orientation measurement is achieved. Document focuses on a synthesis of a PID controller reducing sideway oscillations that occur in motion of a spherical robot with internal pendulum mechanism.
