Cloud computing becomes more and more popular providing the means to organize and deliver almost any kind of data and software services. Since it is inherently scalable to support rapid economic growth and productivity, its distributed data storage layer needs to be capable to address these requirements. A distributed file system contains a large number of cluster nodes and a large number of clients interacting with it. In this article, we propose two acceleration mechanisms based on multi-core network SoC to maximize each cluster node performance. First, the requests to the cluster node are balanced evenly on the platform cores, and second the requests are classified to decrease latency of sensitive operations and improve the overall cluster responsiveness and availability. For implementation, tests and measurements we have used a novel open source distributed file system: Ceph. Among many advantages over the competitors of Ceph we mention preservation of POSIX API, completely decoupled data and metadata and usage of object storage devices instead of block devices.

Topics of this article concern the study of the fundamental nature of the sonoluminescence phenomenon occurring in liquids. At the Institute of Electrical Power engineering at Opole University of Technology the interest in that phenomenon known as secondary phenomenon of cavitation caused by ultrasound became the genesis of a research project concerning acoustic cavitation in mineral insulation oils in which a number of additional experiments performed in the laboratory aimed to determine the influence of a number of acoustic parameters on the process of the studied phenomenona. The main purpose of scientific research subject undertaken was to determine the relationship between the generation of partial discharges in high-voltage power transformer insulation systems, the issue of gas bubbles in transformer oils and the generated acoustic emission signals. It should be noted that currently in the standard approach, the phenomenon of generation of acoustic waves accompanying the occurrence of partial discharges is generally treated as a secondary phenomenon, but it can also be a source of many other related phenomena. Based on our review of the literature data on those referred subjects taken, it must be noted, that this problem has not been clearly resolved, and the description of the relationship between these phenomena is still an open question. This study doesn't prove all in line with the objective of the study, but can be an inspiration for new research project in the future in this topic. Solution of this problem could be a step forward in the diagnostics of insulation systems for electrical power devices based on non-invasive acoustic emission method.

This paper describes a novel mobility assistive device under development in the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST). The proposed system can help patients who do not have enough physical strength on the lower limbs during sit to stand due to aging, diseases such as polymyositis and myopathy, and joint replacement surgery complications. It can follow the natural pattern of human motion during sit to stand providing assistance force under the shoulder. The overall device is compact and employees a parallel mechanism which provide more stiffness. Several experiments were carried out in a VICON room to calculate the human motion posture while sit to stand motion in addition estimate the trajectory of the end effector during assisting. computer simulation was built to verify the performance of the proposed system with the reference trajectory. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents an alternative approach to classical box counting algorithm for fractal dimension estimation. Irrelevant data are eliminated from input sequences of the algorithm and a new fractal dimension, called efficient fractal dimension (EFD), which is based on the remaining sequences is calculated. The discriminating capacity and the time efficiency of EFD are evaluated in comparison with fractal dimension (FD) computed by box counting both theoretically and empirically. The results revealed that EFD is better than FD for texture identification and classification.

There are many types of bio-signals with various control application prospects. In this work possible control application domain of electroencephalographic signal obtained from an easily available, inexpensive EEG headset - Emotiv EPOC was presented. This work also involved application of an embedded system platform. That solution caused limits in choosing an appropriate signal processing method, as embedded platforms characterise with a little efficiency and low computing power. Potential implementation of the embedded platform enables to extend the possible future application of the proposed BCI. It also gives more flexibility, as the platform is able to simulate various environments. In this work traditional, statistical methods were neither used nor described.

Vast arrays of reporting are nowadays in use, allowing ever increasing flexibility and control over the displayed results. However, as IT developed and became available to all business domains, the number of reports used by companies started to challenge the possibility of good management. The European funded project Questor aims to create a revolutionary product that will eliminate the complexities inherent in the report management workflow. The motivation of this project is to substitute the time consuming manual search for information in reports with an automatic one. The final purpose is to make querying the report database as simple as addressing a question in natural language. This paper gives an overview over the concept of the Questor project, its software architecture and its preliminary results.

A new adaptive comb filtering algorithm, capable of tracking the fundamental frequency and amplitudes of different frequency components of a nonstationary harmonic signal embedded in white measurement noise, is proposed. Frequency tracking characteristics of the new scheme are studied analytically, proving (under Gaussian assumptions and optimal tuning) its statistical efficiency for quasi-linear frequency changes. Laboratory tests show that the proposed algorithm can be successfully used for active control of MRI noise.

In this paper we study state-space realizations of Linear and Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. Motivated by biochemical reaction networks, Gonçalves and Warnick have recently introduced the notion of a Dynamical Structure Functions (DSF), a particular factorization of the system's transfer function matrix that elucidates the interconnection structure in dependencies between manifest variables. We build onto this work by showing an intrinsic connection between a DSF and certain sparse left coprime factorizations. By establishing this link, we provide an interesting systems theoretic interpretation of sparsity patterns of coprime factors. In particular we show how the sparsity of these coprime factors allows for a given LTI system to be implemented as a network of LTI sub-systems. We examine possible applications in distributed control such as the design of a LTI controller that can be implemented over a network with a pre-specified topology.

This paper describes a methodology to identify all the parameters of a quadrotor system including the structure parameters and rotor assembly parameters. A CAD model is developed using SOLIDWORKS to calculate the mass moment of inertia and all the missing geometrical parameters. A three simple test rigs are built and used to identify the relationship between the motor input Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal and the angular velocity, the thrust force, and drag moment of the rotors. A simple algorithm is implemented to an inertial measurement unit (IMU) for estimating the attitude and altitude of the quadrotor. Experimental set up is built to verify and test the accuracy of these proposed techniques. A controller is designed based on the feedback linearization method such that the quadrotor attitude can be stabilized. Finally, the experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques and the controller design.

This paper proposes a simple method to determine the laser beam wandering and scattering in free space optics. The main application of this method is to determine the dimensions of a device required to compensate for beam wandering and scattering due to the air turbulences in FSO communications. The method uses color image analysis for automatic determination of the shape of the laser spot, which provides information about the spot area and the maximum amplitude of beam wandering. Results show that when the spot is photographed on a non-colored paper screen, the method is able to determine the laser spot shape accurately. Moreover, the method is robust to the variation of the screen background illumination.
