Heterogeneous computing systems require an efficient way of distributing tasks across processing nodes. The tasks have to be mapped to the processors which execute them in the shortest time possible, while keeping the processors at a similar load. Tests have shown that, in most cases, the genetic algorithm produces the best solution among all the mapping heuristics. This paper presents a Genetic Algorithm with a 3-Step Mutation which significantly increases the solution's convergence rate by using a combination of methods to mutate a chromosome. Beside the standard random approach, we implemented a targeted mutation operator which lightens the load of the most occupied processors. We also focused on different fitness functions in order to improve both the makespan and the load balance. The mutation combinations and the fitness functions are then tested to see which ones perform better and in what cases. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

Association Rule Mining (ARM) represents an important tool for Data Mining techniques. A key step in ARM is to determine the frequent itemsets present within the analyzed data. Recent algorithms addressing this problem focus on identifying frequent itemsets without candidate generation steps. This paper details a new algorithm - Fast Itemset Miner (FIM for short) - that still relies on candidate generation stages, but has a different approach from the standard Apriori algorithm. This approach focuses on increasing size of the interval that candidates belong to, rather than increasing the size of the candidates by one with each corresponding iteration. By comparing the Apriori and FIM candidate generation stages, we show that this second approach uses a faster and more efficient method of determining candidate itemsets. Moreover, such an approach also favors a better support counting method, which greatly impacts on the overall time response of the FIM algorithm. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

Wireless networks rely greatly on security for authentication and confidentiality, due to the use of an open communication medium. The tendency to incorporate wireless capabilities in battery powered hand-held devices makes it difficult to enforce security because of computational resources and battery capacity limitations. One approach to this problem consists in adaptable security mechanisms: different security algorithms may be enforced at any given time, to assure a proper level of protection, while respecting constraints on power and resource consumption. This paper presents such a mechanism (CLASS), which uses a clustering scheme to setup homogenous security areas in the network. The scheme is based on the available energy at every node and on the individual security requirements. By proper assignment of the nodes and by proper selection of security, we show that our method significantly reduces the average energy consumption compared to a heterogeneous network. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

A correct diagnostics together with the early prediction of failure or malfunction of the system are the major issues in modern maintenance. Nowadays, the time-honored diagnostics may be inadequate and lead to omitting failures, resulting in higher costs of repairing damaged equipment. That is why the interest in intelligent diagnostics increases due to the possibility of better interpretation of the component status and early failure prediction. One of the ways of determining the device condition is to measure and analyze the temperature of multiple points on the device. Thermographics may show a beginning of significant wear of a component, and enable a repair or replacing before the failure appears. The paper presents the key aspects of the diagnostics with thermal images, including: technology mapping, mapping algorithms, together with a presentation of available software solutions. © 2011 IEEE.

The main objective of this work is the design and implementation of a hierarchical control solution for chemical and petrochemical processes, namely the control and optimization of the ethylene pyrolysis reactor, the key-installation in the petrochemical industry. Based on all realistic static two-cell coupling faults presented by Hamdioui, van de Goor, and Rodgers in [1], we have defined a complex model of neighborhood pattern sensitive faults (NPSFs) in N ×1 random-access memories [2]. Thus, the large model of NPSFs we have considered (called all static NPSFs) includes state coupling faults, transition coupling faults, write disturb coupling faults, read destructive coupling faults, deceptive read destructive coupling faults, and incorrect read coupling faults. A new multibackground march test able to cover this large model of NPSFs is presented in this paper. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

The extraction and representation of information from volume data are important research avenues in computer-based visualization. The interpretation of three- or multi-dimensional data from various scanning devices is important to medical imaging, diagnosis and treatment, reliability and sustainability analyses in various industrial branches, and, in more general terms, information visualization. In this paper, we present several approaches for the classification and representation of relevant information from volume data sets. The techniques are based on the gradient vector, a property directly derived from the original volume data. We show how this property can be computed and subsequently used for classification through gradient-based one- and multi-dimensional transfer functions, as well as for the enhancement of surface features. The described techniques are illustrated through images generated using our volume rendering framework, from Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data sets. The resulting images show how gradient-based techniques are suited for improved volume classification and the better extraction of meaningful information. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

In this paper a visual self-localization method for a humanoid robot is presented. This one is based on monocular information. The goal of this method is to obtain the position (x;y) and orientation θ of the humanoid robot inside the field of play. The methods proposed include some digital image processing algorithms and geometric interpretation to perform a 3D monocular reconstruction, that allows to measure the relative position between the robot and some known objects (goals and beacons), and to use them to obtain the robot's absolute position, by means of a triangulation method. Finally, the results obtained in Webots and in the real platform are presented. © 2011 IEEE.

Based on literature review and measurements performed on electric power stations which considered adjusted acoustic pressure level, generated during operation of high power transformer units with integrated on load tap changers, it can be stated that the main factors having influence on noise emission to surroundings are columns of fan coolers (cooling apparatus). The subject area presented in the paper considers measurements and value estimation of the adjusted acoustic pressure level occurring around cooler columns with two or three funs. The technical verification and comparative analysis were performed during factory tests. Paper includes determined values of noise generated during operation of fan coolers according to the rotational speed of the fan systems, distance from the (cooler) source by nominal rotational speed value and by height variation of the measuring position on the vertical symmetry axis of the investigated device. The main aim of works performed was estimation of the influence of the rotational speed of fans applied on the emitted to surroundings adjusted acoustic pressure level as well as comparative analysis of noise released to environment according to number of funs (a column with two and three funs). The subject area regards realization of scientific research works considering technical condition estimation of electric power transformer cores based on vibroacoustic measurements performed during their normal operation. Analyses of mechanical vibrations parameters determined in the frequency domain are presented in the paper. Measurements were carried out within laboratory experiments on a real transformer unit with an on load tab changer. The aim of investigational experiment performed was to determine the measuring transducer mount position on the tank of an under real conditions diagnosed transformer unit in which the vibroacoustic signals are characterized by highest amplitudes of the vibration indicators determined. Registration of measured vibroacoustic signals of the oil electric power middle voltage transformer under study was performed during idle running conditions, supplied with rating voltage and concurrently with magnetic circuit damage modeled - loosing of particular core plates. The measurements and analysis of vibroacoustic indicators determined were performed by use of specialist measuring apparatus from Brüel & Kjær - Pulse Dyn-XI system and Pulse LabShop programming environment.
