In this paper, the authors do a comparative study of two methods to eliminate the static hazards from logical functions. The first method consists in determining the coupled terms and getting the term that masks the static hazards, and the second method consists in determining the masking additional term by solving a system of Boolean equations. From the presented examples, the authors deduced that the 2nd method (solving a Boolean equations system) is more advantageous because it eliminates the heuristic nature of the first method (the determination of coupled terms) and, by solving the equations system it determines all prime implicants that needs to be added to the function's expression. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

Evolutionary algorithms have become popular in the recent years as a general, simple, and robust technique that can be used when other optimization methods cannot be applied. Presently, there are a number of evolutionary/genetic algorithm libraries publicly available;however, they are not specifically designed for multiagent systems. The framework described in this paper addresses this problem and presents a general architecture for evolutionary optimization aimed to be used by agents in a multiagent system implemented in the JADE framework inspired from the island model of parallel genetic algorithms. The characteristics of evolutionary algorithms that are more appropriate for use in a distributed, cooperative multiagent environment are also identified. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

The low radiation conditions and the predominantly phase-object image formation of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) result in extremely high noise levels and low contrast in the recorded micrographs. The process of single particle or tomographic 3D reconstruction does not completely eliminate this noise and is even capable of introducing new sources of noise during alignment or when correcting for instrument parameters. The recently developed Digital Paths Supervised Variance (DPSV) denoising filter uses local variance information to control regional noise in a robust and adaptive manner. The performance of the DPSV filter was evaluated in this review qualitatively and quantitatively using simulated and experimental data from cryo-EM and tomography in two and three dimensions. We also assessed the benefit of filtering experimental reconstructions for visualization purposes and for enhancing the accuracy of feature detection. The DPSV filter eliminates high-frequency noise artifacts (density gaps), which would normally preclude the accurate segmentation of tomography reconstructions or the detection of alpha-helices in single-particle reconstructions. This collaborative software development project was carried out entirely by virtual interactions among the authors using publicly available development and file sharing tools. © 2012 International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB) and Springer.

In this paper an anti-slip predictive controller is designed and implemented in order to control the rear wheels of a V-PRA (Variable Powered Rear Axle) vehicle. The control algorithm is EPSAC, a Model based Predictive control (MPC) strategy. It uses explicitly a model of the system for the prediction of the future system output, in order to calculate the optimal control input which will bring the system to a required setpoint. The main goals of this predictive controller were setpoint trajectory following, disturbance rejection and maintain overall the stability of the V-PRA vehicle. Although the process is nonlinear, being influenced by several parameters, linear discrete-time ARX models could be obtained based on system linearization around an operating point. An initial SISO controller was developed and tested, based on a Simulink model of the process. The control performances were tested successfully in presence of all kind of disturbances, denoting a robust controller. © 2011 IFAC.

In order to improve the lifetime and performance of a hybrid electric vehicle, one of the most challenging tasks is to improve the performance of the electrical energy storage, regarding the electrical power and energy capacity. By introducing a supercapacitor as auxiliary source to increase the system power and to take over the battery stresses, the performance of the combined energy storage unit is improved. This paper introduces a completed model of energy storage system, including a pack of batteries, a pack of supercapacitors and a control strategy. The aim is to discharge the capacitors when the required power from energy storage is above a threshold meaning that the driver needs a boost of power for a period of time. Because of their high density of power supercapacitors have more efficiency in delivering it for short time. This has a positive impact on the fuel consumption and the state of charge at the end of the drive cycle. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

In this paper, the hardware component of a new technology used to communicate with people with major neuro-locomotor disability using ocular electromyogram is presented. The signals produced by the ocular muscle, provided by five electromyogram sensors are amplified used a new instrumentation amplifier and then processed by the software component of the proposed communication technology. The information obtained after these signals are processed is used in order to move a pointer on a display in concordance to the patient gaze direction. In this way, the needs of the patient are sent to the caretaker by detection of voluntary blinking. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents a new technology used for communicating with people with major neuro-locomotor disability by determining gaze direction on a monitor screen. Gaze direction is determined by pupil position through image analysis. The proposed communication technology ensures communication with the patient as follows: (1) on a monitor screen divided in four sections are displayed key words and corresponding ideograms;(2) the patient sees the key words and focuses his/her gaze on a certain section - a pointer allows the control of gaze direction;(3) an infra-red mini/micro video camera placed on the patient's head sends the image of the eye to a computer;(4) the focusing of the patient's gaze on a certain key word i.e. a certain section of the screen is identified by image analysis;(5) voluntary blinking, also objectified by image analysis, shows the selection of a certain word. The patient's wish or need, represented by the key word, is then sent to a server and from there to a caretaker by means of a wire or a wireless transmission system. The absence of a selection within a certain time period causes the displaying of a new set of ideograms. The new technology is useful in the case of the patients who cannot communicate verbally, through signs or in writing and is based on their ability to control eye movement, which is often the case with people with major locomotor disabilities. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

In the last two decades, Chaos theory has received a great deal of attention from the cryptographic community. This paper presents two ideas. First idea is using chaotic functions to overcome the weaknesses of the classical Hill cipher. The second idea is proposing a new encoder-decoder architecture, called ChaoEncoDeco, for securing JPEG images. An extra stage of encryption is embedded within the traditional JPEG codec to improve security level of such system. This security stage uses one of the chaotic functions called Logistic Map. This map is used to enhance the Hill cipher and achieve more secure encryption key. The properties of both chaotic system and of the Hill cipher encryption key are all utilized to obtain ultimate secure systems. The proposed encryption algorithm is crypto-analyzed and compared to the standard Hill cipher algorithm. Complete evaluation for the proposed architecture is also performed which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed system. © 2011 IEEE.

Simulation of quantum computers using classical computers is a hard problem with high memory and computational requirements. Parallelization can alleviate this problem, allowing the simulation of more qubits at the same time or the same number of qubits to be simulated in less time. A promising approach is to exploit the high performance computing capabilities provided by the latest graphical processing units. In this paper we present a parallel implementation of the QC-lib quantum computer simulator on the GPU using the CUDA programming model. The proposed scheme for partitioning the terms that describe the state of a quantum register takes advantage of the specific characteristics of the CUDA memory spaces and allows for an efficient parallelization of the general singe qubit operator. Experimental results indicate that very good speed-ups can be obtained in contrast with the sequential implementation.

In proteomics 2-dimensional SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) is the most widely used method for analyzing protein mixtures qualitatively. There are, however, a lot of noise and measurement biases which needs to be accounted for both in the localization of spots as well as in the quantitative measurement of protein expression. Previous techniques for denoising 2D gels are based on thresholding, smoothing and spot recognition. Wavelet transformations have also been applied to denoise 2D gels, however these techniques are typically in the frequency domain and they tend to shift spots slightly. In this paper, we improve the protein spot detection process by wavelet de-noising based on genetic algorithm.
