A new methodology for the design of control systems for real time applications is presented. It is proposed to have a first stage of assisted design of nominal systems with simulation based verification of the achieved performances. The control algorithm will then be improved by robustification to reproduce as good as possible the performances obtained in simulation on the real time process. Finally, a supervisor is implemented to optimize the thermo-energetic process and to compute the best choice for the reference signals.

A design and an implementation of a high performance control configuration for chemical and petrochemical processes and plants were been presented in this paper. We have proposed a hierarchical configuration of control by considering the external factors effects to assure the stability until the process operation. The study case in this paper was realized on a petrochemical plant which is a pyrolysis reactor that is located in the petroleum refinery of Pitesti, known as the greatest pole of oil separation and treatment in Romania. The proposed hierarchical configuration is organized on two levels of automation starting by data acquisition and theirs primary processing as low level of automation and then the optimization solution definition which represents the efficient operating decision of the pyrolysis reactor as a high level of automation in which a new approach of optimization was been proposed. During this application we have used some of the most recent automation software's that were planted in the ACPC laboratory computers, automaticcontrol and computersciencefaculty of Bucharest.

An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is widely used technique in cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. It is employed to search for the high concentration regions of particular metabolites, which are directly related to the concentration of cancer cells. NMR signal maybe be characterized by a set of peaks which are representation of every distinct metabolite. Area under peak must be calculated in order to obtain proper information about metabolite amount. Commercially available software allows for the analysis of one-peak-in-time only. The proposed technique, based on Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), allows for modeling all-peaks-in-time, and corrects after the neighboring peaks giving more accurate estimates of metabolite concentration. The resulting software processes NMR signal from the very beginning up to the final result, which is given in a form of so called metabolite map.

The paper presents concept of virtual resources (VR) which improve multilevel, remote Internet-based operation of real-time controlled industrial processes. In comparison to classical directly connected-to-plant operations, the VR-based system introduces all typical features of its flexible nature, hiding the unnecessary implementation details from the process operators. The user-suited, human-computer interfaces (HCI) improve cooperation between specialists who must carry out operating control of the process. Realisation of such a system is based on the concept of maximal usage of particular specialist's skills improving theirs cooperation. Although the proposed concept is dedicated to remote operating experimentation on real-time controlled industrial plants, it has also a more general aspect. As a case example, the cooperative operating control of a biotechnological pilot-plant is presented.

Conical tanks are widely used in food process industries, hydrometallurgical industries and also in the water treatment industry. Moreover, liquid level control of a conical tank is still challenging for typical process control because of occurred nonlinearities. This paper presents comparison between Adaptive and Non-Adaptive version of popular predictive Dynamic Matrix control.

Block diagrams are a popular tool for representing relationships in complex systems and became a kind of universal language, comprehended widely in engineering sciences dealing with dynamical systems. There are many software development environments (e.g. Simulink, LabVIEW, VisSIM) accepting such block diagrams as a programming language. However, block diagrams are rarely used in the field of systems visualisation dominated by custom made process flow diagrams. This paper presents a concept of using block diagrams as a tool for run-time presentation of a time-variant structure of complex control systems. At first, formal description of block diagrams is derived as an ontology, class hierarchy, and XML Schema. In the second part of the paper developed software tools are presented i.e. equation parser, Web Service implemented in a dynamic agent-based control system, and an AJAX-based application visualising acquired models as live interactive vector diagrams. Existing solutions for automated diagram spatial arrangement are not proper for block diagrams containing feedback loops, therefore presented visualisation tool, to achieve comprehendible and aesthetical layout, implements modified approach, which is thoroughly discussed.

There are few examples of process benchmarking in the literature nowadays which allow to determine quality of tested control algorithms unequivocally. It is believed that exothermic CSTR process (with Arrhenius-type reaction), CSTB process (with Monod-type or Contoise-type reaction) and pH process fulfill such a function. However, most commonly used settings for CSTR and CSTB processes display nonlinearities which for control algorithms are not really challenging. An additional inconvenience is introduced by the high cost of a real laboratory installation and its maintenance -even when it is just a pilot plant. Tanks with variable surface area presented in this article seem to be a strong challenge for the process control. They seem to be the good alternative for the mentioned processes due to the fact that the cost of developing and maintaining such an installation is relatively low.
