Supporting educational processes with Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) has great potential. In this paper, we explore the possibility of identifying students’ learning progress with HMMs. Students’ grades are used to train the HMMs to find out if the analysis of obtained models lets us detect patterns emerging from student’s results. We also try to predict the final students’ results on the basis of their partial grades. A new, classification approach for this problem, using properties of HMMs is proposed: High and Low State Model (HLSM). © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Super-resolution reconstruction embraces a variety of techniques aimed at generating a high-resolution image from a low-resolution input. The goals of super-resolution range from hallucination that consists in producing a visually-attractive high-resolution image to reconstructing the real high-resolution information that is commonly required in Earth observation scenarios. The latter can be achieved by fusing a number of images with the same georeference, captured at a different time. Such multi-image super-resolution solutions underpinned with deep learning have been recently proposed for enhancing images acquired with the Proba-V sensor. This satellite captures images of 100 m and 300 m ground sampling distance, which makes it relatively easy to collect sufficient amounts of real-world data that can be used for training deep convolutional neural networks. As such data are unavailable for most of other satellites, alternative ways for training the networks must be adopted. In this paper, we demonstrate our solution for super-resolving multispectral Sentinel-2 images, and we present its most important components that may help implement multi-image super-resolution for other satellites. Our main focus is on the data that are used for training, as well as on the low-resolution images that are presented for reconstruction. We expect that the reported techniques will allow for increasing the capabilities of using Sentinel-2 images in a variety of practical Earth observation scenarios, but even more importantly, the presented methodology may be helpful in exploiting multiple-image SR for enhancing images captured with other satellites. Skin cancer is one of the major threats to men's and women's health on a global scale, and as with all other cancers, early diagnosis leads to a high rate of recovery. To reduce the required time for diagnosis, we developed an architecture for the automated classification of dermatological images with multiple skin lesions. The proposed system is based on a classical Unet architecture trained with patches extracted from four images with various skin lesions to identify the areas of interest whose condition is determined by an adapted EfficientNetB5 architecture trained with the HAM10000 dataset. Our results showed that the dermatoscopic image models learned from the HAM10000 dataset can be successfully used to diagnose skin cancer from images with multiple lesions, captured with usual cameras. © 2022 IEEE.

The main focus of this research is on improving the performance of dynamic systems with actuator non-linearities and time-varying disturbances. To this end, using the concept of finite-time stability, a novel observer is presented to estimate the disturbances in systems with input non-linearities. Then, introducing an innovative sliding manifold, a robust observer-based technique is derived to guarantee the finite-time stability of the sliding surface. Hence, the closed-loop system would be stable in the presence of hard non-linearities and time-varying disturbances. The performance of the proposed approach was assessed in using a simulation study of two numerical examples. The obtained results and comparison with a conventional method confirmed the benefits of the suggested approach. © 2022 The Authors. The amount of data generated daily grows tremendously in virtually all domains of science and industry, and its efficient storage, processing and analysis pose significant practical challenges nowadays. To automate the process of extracting useful insights from raw data, numerous supervised machine learning algorithms have been researched so far. They benefit from annotated training sets which are fed to the training routine which elaborates a model that is further deployed for a specific task. The process of capturing real-world data may lead to acquring noisy observations, ultimately affecting the models trained from such data. The impact of the label noise is, however, under-researched, and the robustness of classic learners against such noise remains unclear. We tackle this research gap and not only thoroughly investigate the classification capabilities of an array of widely-adopted machine learning models over a variety of contamination scenarios, but also suggest new metrics that could be utilized to quantify such models’ robustness. Our extensive computational experiments shed more light on the impact of training set contamination on the operational behavior of supervised learners. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence into clinical processes requires addressing ethical aspects and inherent risks, contributing not only to the automation of these processes but also to the ongoing development of personalized medicine. The generation of complex diagnostic and personalized treatment solutions must be carried out in accordance with deontological norms and ethical standards, aimed at ensuring the protection of patient autonomy and safety. The development of an architectural framework for the identification of pathologies and the provision of treatment scenarios must ensure both the efficiency of the solutions offered and their compliance with ethical standards, involving the creation of a set of rules and practices that encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between experts in technology, medicine, and law. The fundamental principles that facilitate the integration of emerging technologies into clinical processes promote patient autonomy, decision-making transparency, and clinical responsibility. During the last few years, there has been a growing interest in the topic of using natural or synthetic esters as an alternative to mineral oils in oil transformers due to the easier way to obtain them and their ability to exhibit better electrical properties. In addition, more and more researchers are describing in their work that doping esters with nanoparticles is capable of further improving these properties. Therefore, in the current work, it was decided to see what effect the addition of a hydrophobic carbon shell iron nanoparticle to ORLEN mineral oil and Midel 7131 synthetic ester would have on selected electrical parameters of the insulating fluid, i.e. breakdown voltage and electrical strength.

computer games as an educational tool significantly improved information retention, student involvement, and motivation. Despite the growing popularity and the demonstrated positive impact, little progress is made to let educators create games without learning game programming or investing massive amounts of time, money, and human resources. This paper considers the usage of procedural content generation in simplifying the generation of game environments. Given that most educational material is in text format, we evaluate the possibility of generating 3D scenes starting from natural language text. A comprehensive survey of the current methods is presented, analyzing whether they can be successfully used in game-based learning. The study discusses several current limitations and possible improvements, highlighting a need for better progress in the domain.

Active disturbance rejection control for unmanned tracked vehicles in leader-follower scenarios: discrete-time implementation and field test validation

This paper presents a systematic design of an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) system for unmanned tracked vehicles (UTVs) in leaderfollow formation. Two ADRC controllers are designed for the lateral and the longitudinal channels of the UTV based on control errors in the cross-track and the along-track directions. Through simulations, the proposed ADRC approach is first shown to outperform the conventional PI/PID controllers in scenarios involving sudden changes in the leader motion dynamics, slippage disturbances, and measurement noise. Then, a comprehensive experimental validation of the proposed leader-follower control is performed using a laboratory UTV equipped with a camera and laser sensors (to enable the calculation of error signals). In order to provide more effective interaction between the human (leader) and the UTV (follower) during the leader-follower task, a camera-based subsystem for human pose recognition is developed and deployed. Finally, the experimental results obtained outdoors demonstrate that the proposed ADRC-based leader-follower UTV control system achieves high tracking capabilities, robustness against slippage disturbances, and adaptability to changing environmental conditions. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.
