As of early 2020, almost all countries are fighting the coronavirus pandemic by implementing the rigorous restrictions recommended by the World Health Organisation to help reduce the number of infections as much as possible. The restrictions also apply to members of the academic community. The universities have suspended all teaching activities - except online. Most universities have introduced solutions for distance learning. However, organisation of distance education requires appropriate technological infrastructure. Providing the right IT infrastructure is not an easy challenge, because network devices and network servers note record-breaking peak loads during this time. It seems that there are potentially many possibilities of using artificial intelligence to improve the performance of distance learning platforms, information systems and network infrastructure in this difficult and demanding period. Examples of such use of artificial intelligence applications are presented in this article. The paper shows that the use of artificial intelligence to improve the operation of distance learning servers is potentially possible in many areas. It is also worth noting that the application of artificial neural networks and LSTM neural networks for this purpose seems very promising. The presentation of sample experiments and obtained results in this article seems to confirm this thesis.

Super-resolution reconstruction is a process aimed at enhancing image spatial resolution. To evaluate the quality of super-resolution, the reconstruction outcome is compared with a ground-truth reference image, and the dissimilarity between them is commonly treated as a determinant of the reconstruction quality. While this is straightforward for simulated data, it becomes more challenging for real-world scenarios, in which reference images and the reconstruction inputs are acquired using different imaging sensors. In such cases, the dissimilarity also results from other factors concerned with different sensor characteristics. In a recently organized Proba-V Super Resolution Challenge, the reconstruction quality was assessed using a modified peak signal-to-noise ratio which compensates for small shifts and global changes in the brightness. In the study reported here, we investigate a number of image similarity metrics to verify their robustness against different levels of distortions applied to Proba-V images. We expect that the reported results will help in choosing appropriate metrics while developing new super-resolution solutions aimed at real-world scenarios.

This work studies the sparse adaptive filter designs in the presence of impulsive disturbance for audio signal recovery. By using the sparse representation of desired signal and compressibility of impulsive disturbance, a joint sparse least mean p-norm (JSLMP) optimization, in which p-norm (1 ≤ p ≤ 2) measures the data fidelity and q-norm (0 ≤ q ≤ 1) enforces sparse solutions, is developed, termed as q-JSLMP. The filter weights update is derived based on the gradient descent, and the Adam and variable step size (VSS) are integrated to accelerate convergence and avoid potential local minima. In the special case of q = 1, namely 1-JSLMP, its convergence condition and mean square deviation (MSD) analysis are derived. Finally, the frame of application to corrupted audio signals is designed. The results from experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms other approaches in terms of objective measures on numerical simulation and speech datasets. © 2024, The Authors. The article presents the issue of scale deposits in sanitary installations. Scale contributes to improper operation of sanitary devices and leads to their degradation. Scale build-up in pipes and measuring elements results in higher water consumption due to inaccurate estimation of this resource consumption. The consequence is that devices based on process automation do not work properly due to disturbances in the actual water flow. The formation of deposits also leads to economic and ecological losses, as sanitary installations elements have to be replaced, which affects the increased use of raw materials and the generation of waste. This is not in line with current trends and global objectives related to circular economy. Scale also results in increased energy consumption and reduced energy efficiency. This is due to the resistance of the flows and the increased work of the pumps. Scale has insulating properties, which results in less efficient heat transfer. In this stady, a mathematical model was developed to detect the formation of scale deposits in sanitary installations. On this basis, it is possible to control the quality status of sanitary installation components. In this way, by taking appropriate action at an early stage of the formation of deposits, it can extend the life of the installation. Having information on scale deposits, it will help avoid wasting water and lead to more accurate measurement of water flows. This is important for the proper operation of devices such as heat pumps, where their operation is automated and requires precise measurements of the energy processes taking place. Scale is a significant problem for households, and also for factories or public institutions that are exposed to hard water environments. © 2021 International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference. Performance evaluation for ranking-based discretisation

Discretisation often constitutes a part of initial data preparation stage. It translates continuous domain of features into granular, by assigning a number of intervals to represent attributes’ values by nominal categories. Typically all real-valued features are subjected to transformations, regardless of their characteristics. The paper presents research on discretisation executed with a discerning approach. To all available attributes, feature selection mechanisms were employed, in the form of rankings that order variables based on their importance. Exploiting this discovered knowledge on attributes, discretisation was then driven by a ranking, and either highest or lowest ranking features were selected for transformation. The influence of selective discretisation on the performance of classification systems was studied for three popular inducers. The procedure was employed in the field of stylometry, and a task of authorship recognition, considered as a binary classification with balanced classes. The experiments show that discretisation based on importance of features can lead to better performance than in the case of transformations applied to all attributes.

Aims. We aim to investigate the extreme variability properties of the TeV blazar S4 0954+65 using optical photometric and polarisation observations carried out between 2017 and 2023 using three ground-based telescopes. Methods. We examined an extensive dataset comprised of 138 intraday (observing duration shorter than a day) light curves (LCs) of S4 0954+65 for flux, spectral, and polarisation variations on diverse timescales. For the variable LCs, we computed the minimum variability timescales. We investigated flux-flux correlations and colour variations to look for spectral variations on long (several weeks to years) timescales. Additionally, we looked for connections between optical R-band flux and polarisation degree. Results. We found significant variations in 59 out of 138 intraday LCs. We detected a maximum change of 0.58 ± 0.11 in V-band magnitude within ∼2.64 h and a corresponding minimum variability timescale of 18.21 ± 4.87 mins on 2017 March 25. During the course of our observing campaign, the source brightness changed by ∼4 magnitudes in V and R bands;however, we did not find any strong spectral variations. The slope of the relative spectral energy distribution was 1.37 ± 0.04. The degree of polarisation varied from ∼3% to 39% during our monitoring. We observed a change of ∼120 degrees in polarisation angle (PA) within ∼3 h on 2022 April 13. No clear correlation was found between optical flux and the degree of polarisation. Conclusions. The results of our optical flux, colour, and polarisation study provide hints that turbulence in the relativistic jet could be responsible for the intraday optical variations in the blazar S4 0954+65. However, the long-term flux variations may be caused by changes in the Doppler factor. © 2023 EDP sciences. All rights reserved.

ALICE is an experiment hosted at the CERN facilities in Geneva. The data collected by the experiment is distributed in multiple geo-locations. ALICE software development team is managing the technologies that offer a unitary view to the distributed resources. AliEn API Services and JAliEn Services are used by the researchers to access and analyze the collected data. The ALICE developers cannot analyze the client-server interactions, while the only information available is gathered in the log files. The main requirement of the project is to provide an analysis tool to extract vital information out the log files. The tool is tested against log files generated by the ALICE production servers and is deployed on a custom ALICE-owned instance. As of June 2020, the project is being used by the developers to extract near real-time viable requests information and have a correct picture of the researcher's interaction with the services.

The article concerns modern soft magnetic materials made by rapid solidification and subsequent ultra-rapid annealing. Due to the lower amount of non-magnetic elements, higher magnetisation is possible. Unfortunately, the lack of those elements causes difficulty during isothermal nanocrystallisation operation, being crucial from the final product properties point of *** of isothermal heat treatment, ultra-rapid annealing is implemented. It reflects in materials with good magnetic softness and higher possible magnetisation *** amorphous alloy with Fe75.3Ni10B14Cu0.7 chemical composition was heat treated between cooper blocks at 773K in the range of 1-60s. To study structure evolution, we brought XRD, DSC, Flash DSC, Mössbauer spectroscopy, TEM, and HRTEM techniques to *** on the DSC results, we estimated the minimum heating speed to obtain optimal structure at 6000K/min. The Mössbauer results allowed us to study annealing time-dependent local atomic ordering in the amorphous state. A comparison of X-Ray and synchrotron diffraction results drove us to the conclusion that X-Ray measurements are sufficient to determine the material structure. TEM shows the formation of α-Fe crystallites even after an annealing time of 0.5s. The increase in annealing time leads to an increase in the crystalline phase volume fraction and growth of α-Fe crystallite size. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In the current context of Big Data, a multitude of new NoSQL solutions for storing, managing, and extracting information and patterns from semi-structured data have been proposed and implemented. These solutions were developed to relieve the issue of rigid data structures present in relational databases, by introducing semi-structured and flexible schema design. As current data generated by different sources and devices, especially from IoT sensors and actuators, use either XML or JSON format, depending on the application, database technologies that store and query semi-structured data in XML format are needed. Thus, Native XML Databases, which were initially designed to manipulate XML data using standardized querying languages, i.e., XQuery and XPath, were rebranded as NoSQL Document-Oriented Databases Systems. Currently, the majority of these solutions have been replaced with the more modern JSON based Database Management Systems. However, we believe that XML-based solutions can still deliver performance in executing complex queries on heterogeneous collections. Unfortunately nowadays, research lacks a clear comparison of the scalability and performance for database technologies that store and query documents in XML versus the more modern JSON format. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, there are no Big Data-compliant benchmarks for such database technologies. In this paper, we present a comparison for selected Document-Oriented Database Systems that either use the XML format to encode documents, i.e., BaseX, eXist-db, and Sedna, or the JSON format, i.e., MongoDB, CouchDB, and Couchbase. To underline the performance differences we also propose a benchmark that uses a heterogeneous complex schema on a large DBLP corpus. © 2021, CC BY.

Distributed formation control for manipulator end-effectors

We present three classes of distributed formation controllers for achieving and maintaining the 2D/3D formation shape of manipulator end-effectors to cope with different scenarios due to availability of modeling parameters. We firstly present a distributed formation controller for manipulators whose system parameters are perfectly known. The formation control objective is achieved by assigning virtual springs between end-effectors and by adding damping terms at joints, which provides a clear physical interpretation of the proposed solution. Subsequently, we extend it to the case where manipulator kinematic and system parameters are not exactly known. An extra integrator and an adaptive estimator are introduced for gravitational compensation and stabilization, respectively. Simulation results with planar manipulators and with seven degree-of-freedom humanoid manipulator arms are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
