The article presents the construction of an innovative electromagnetic mill, which in comparison to traditional solutions provide a significant reduction of energy consumption and higher technological performance. The device is equipped with a control system, measuring grinding quality or analyzing the operating status of the mill. Direct control of the grinding process is implemented in industrial controllers (PLC) and is supported by the optimization algorithms that run in the supervisory control system (SCADA). © 2016

This paper describes the stage of initial validation of the model-based control of the plate heat exchanger (PHE) by simulation. For the distributed parameter model of PHE validated on the basis of the measurement data collected from the real process, the approximation by the orthogonal collocation method is applied and then the linearizing controller with the on-line compensation for the potential modelling inaccuracies is suggested. This approach ensures relatively low computational complexity due to the low dimension of the approximating dynamical model, which allows for its practical implementation in the programmable logic controllers. The suggested controller is tested by simulation under the realistic experiments scenario and it shows its superiority and robustness over the conventional PI controller, for both tracking and disturbances rejection. The results show that the suggested concept can be considered as an interesting model-based alternative for the PID-based control systems that are still widely applied in the industrial practice. © 2014 SciTePress. Brain tumor is formed by the uncontrolled growth of cancerous (malign) or non-cancerous (benign) unhealthy cells in the brain. In the present world brain tumor is a very dangerous disease and the main reason for many deaths. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is mostly used to produce medical images for the brain tumor analysis. This paper has two objectives, first one is to identify if the MRI images has or not brain tumor using Convolutional Neural Network algorithm based on ResNet50 architecture. For second objective, image segmentation, we propose a generalized focal loss function based on Tversky index. Compared to the commonly used Dice loss, the proposed loss function achieves better precision and recall when training on small structures such as lesions. © 2021 IEEE.

This article broaches the sample implementation of the WWW Module for Intelligent Housing system, based on a single-chip, 8-bit microcomputer, which was scope of the master diploma thesis of one of the authors. It describes both the hardware and software part of the module with special focus on the solution of pseudo-parallel processing of network data, including the way of handling many network connections to the server at the same time. The authors consider the use of embedded interrupt system as a base of a time-division multiplexing (TDM) software layer developed and describe the developed version of minimal TCP/IP stack (so called microstack), with an overview of all protocols implemented. Also the implementation of a simple WWW server with capability to interact with module inputs and outputs is being discussed, as well as the possibility of interaction with other Intelligent Housing modules connected to the Module. The article shows exemplary applications of the mentioned Web Module and delivers information about ways of extending the Web Module's functionality. © IEEE.

The classification and identification of blood cells from microscopic images is very important for the detection of serious diseases. To increase the efficiency of the identification and counting of cells from 8 classes such as Basophils, Eosinophils, Erythroblasts, Immature Granulocytes, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Neutrophils, and Thrombocytes, a special advance was taken using artificial intelligence for image analysis. This article proposes a collective intelligence decision system based on the fusion of individual decisions of four efficient convolutional neural networks, VGG 16, Xception, ResNet-50, and NasNetLarge. The fusion is based on the efficiency of each network's performance in recognizing (correctly classifying) the membership class of the analyzed cell. In this sense, a weight is established for each network associated with a certain class. The global system has better performances than each individual network and is better or comparable to those reported in recent works. © 2022 IEEE.

Modelling and control of a Flexible Floating Boom: First Approach

Floating booms are useful tools in the marine world, especially for marine demarcation where some kind of contamination of sea, ocean or coastal water is present. In this work we have developed a mathematical model for a flexible floating boom which is hooked on two boats (unmanned surface vehicles). It is meant to be used for oil spill containment in marine areas. In order to simplify the model and to make possible its computer simulation, we have adopted a quasi-static approximation where we assume that the inertial forces are small compared to the drag forces applied to the boom. The simulation of this mathematical model has allowed the analysis of the behavior of the floating boom. Based on this knowledge, we have designed a control system which allows us to maintain the flexible floating boom in a specific configuration by controlling its shape. For that purpose, the control approach deals with the speed of the two ends of the floating boom. The results obtained with the implemented control system are encouraging, considering the model is a simplified discrete one and the control effort is reasonable. © 2017

The prediction of software reliability can determine the current reliability of a product, using statistical techniques based on the failures data, obtained during testing or system usability. Software reliability growth models attempt to predict the number of defect using a correlation between exponential function and defect data. The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution of a real-life product over three releases, using the Rayleigh function in order to predict the number of defects. Our paper offers two possibilities for computing the model parameters, and then we should be able to decide which is better and what can be improved. Results from this study will be used to determine which approach is best to be used. © 2011 IEEE.

The paper presents a solution for holonic control of smart manufacturing systems, using a mix of digitization procedures that capitalize on the possibilities offered by a Digital Twin simulation environment in modeling and simulating both the physical entities of the industrial plant and of the execution phases of the production process. The main novelty is the creation of software assets by encapsulating FBs in holon-type containers, which can be used both in the design phase and in the production control phase. The validation of the solution was performed on a mechatronic laboratory line, specialized for assembly and disassembly operations. © 2021 IEEE.

Real-time sulfur dioxide (SO2) monitoring is essential to mitigate its severe health and environmental impacts while ensuring compliance with industrial safety and emission regulations. Two-dimensional MoS2 stands out as a promising material for developing low-temperature-operated gas sensors due to its exceptionally high surface-to-volume ratio and ease of surface functionalization. However, monitoring the SO2 level faces challenges, including limited selectivity, sensitivity, and detection range, with high operating temperatures (200-600 °C) or external light source requirements. To address these issues, we present a highly sensitive SO2 sensor based on Fe2O3 nanoparticle-functionalized vertically aligned MoS2 nanostructure material, which is fabricated using a scalable sputtering process. The Fe2O3-MoS2 sensor exhibits a broad detection range from 100 ppb to 100 ppm, with a theoretical detection limit of around 22.8 ppb. When exposed to 5 ppm of SO2, the sensor achieves a response of around 32.2%, with response and recovery times of approximately 104 and 141 s, respectively. The fabricated sensor demonstrated impressive sensitivity (4.9%/ppm) for SO2 concentration in the range of 0.1 to 5 ppm, coupled with excellent reproducibility and stability at 150 °C. This enhanced performance is attributed to the catalytic effect of Fe2O3 and modulation of the heterojunction barrier at the interface. This study introduces a highly scalable, reliable, and stable Fe2O3-MoS2 sensor, which paves the way for developing energy-efficient and miniaturized SO2 sensors. © 2025 American Chemical Society.
