Sampled channel impulse response (CIR) of a sparse propagation environment usually has a structure of compressible signal, which can be approximated by a sparse one using compressive sensing methods like Orthogonal Greedy Algorithms (OGA). An accuracy of the estimated CIR taps depend on ambient noise and the CIR taps that have not been recovered yet. The Mean Square Error (MSE) is a popular measure to quantify the identification error between the estimated CIR and the actual one. A theoretical study of the MSE metric and some average properties of the OGA residual error have contributed to propose a MSE-based rule to control an iterative process of greedy methods. The conducted numerical experiments show that the suggested rule, applied to stop the Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) algorithm, provides a fine control over the identification process of the compressible CIRs.

The problem of identification of a nonstationary autoregressive process with unknown, and possibly time-varying, rate of parameter changes, is considered and solved using the parallel estimation approach. The proposed two-stage estimation scheme, which combines the local estimation approach with the basis function one, offers both quantitative and qualitative improvements compared with the currently used single-stage methods.

The authors created a convenient and easy to use tool for calculating basic Ni-P resistive layer parameters, namely surface resistance and TCR of test resistor, based on chemical metallization parameters. The program allows calculating basic values characterizing the technological process of Ni-P resistive layer formation by means of chemical metallization. The values are temperature and acidity of the metallization bath. The values are calculated for a given level of surface resistance of Ni-P resistive layer and defined required range of changes of TCR of test resistor with the Ni-P layer. The calculations are possible for surface resistance values in the range of 0.5 Ω/ 2.5 Ω/. As the program was developed on the basis of experimental data, parameters of resistors produced using the mathematical model are in practice coherent with expected results. The best coherence is achieved for simultaneous simulation of surface resistance and TCR. Very good results are also obtained if one wants to use a metallization bath of a temperature from the (333÷353) K range in order to obtain the required resistor parameters. © 2017 IMAPS Europe.

A comparative evaluation of the different, very popular powder magnetic materials for a voltage source inverter output filter coil core is presented. The basic continuous model of the inverter is simply based on the output filter transfer function. This model is used in the majority of inverter control designs. That is why the change of inductance and the increase of the equivalent serial resistance that is caused by power losses in the core and any other parasitic parameters of the coil should be known in the operating point because they depend on the frequency and the amplitude of the magnetising current. The theoretical calculation of these parameters variability is very inaccurate because of the complex voltage waveform on the coil, so the direct measurements of the inverter control transfer function are presented in aim to enable the choice of the most useful magnetic material for the inverter design. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2017.

In this paper the concept of a unified torque/impedance controller is applied to a pneumatically actuated, antagonistic robot joint. The investigated control algorithm consists of a cascaded structure in which the outer torque/impedance controller commands a desired torque to two cylinder-based force controllers. The torque-/impedance controller is equipped with a virtual tank that ensures passivity of the control loops above force level. Additionally, a shaping function provides a continuous transition to impedance control in case of sudden contact loss during a torque control operation. External torques used in the feedback loop for contact force regulation are estimated by a momentum observer. Experimental and simulation results show a maximum deflection of 9.7° over 130 ms in case of contact loss until a resting position is reached. Additionally, step and sinusoidal torque tracking up to 5 Hz was successfully tested at good performance. © 2017 IEEE.

Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) is essential for stroke diagnosis, treatment decisions, and prognosis. However, image and disease variability hinder the development of generalizable AI algorithms with clinical value. We address this gap by presenting a novel ensemble algorithm derived from the 2022 Ischemic Stroke Lesion Segmentation (ISLES) challenge. ISLES’22 provided 400 patient scans with ischemic stroke from various medical centers, facilitating the development of a wide range of cutting-edge segmentation algorithms by the research community. By assessing them against a hidden test set, we identified strengths, weaknesses, and potential biases. Through collaboration with leading teams, we combined top-performing algorithms into an ensemble model that overcomes the limitations of individual solutions. Our ensemble model combines the individual algorithms’ strengths and achieved superior ischemic lesion detection and segmentation accuracy (median Dice score: 0.82, median lesion-wise F1 score: 0.86) on our internal test set compared to individual algorithms. This accuracy generalized well across diverse image and disease variables. Furthermore, the model excelled in extracting clinical biomarkers like lesion types and affected vascular territories. Notably, in a Turing-like test, neuroradiologists consistently preferred the algorithm’s segmentations over manual expert efforts, highlighting increased comprehensiveness and precision. Validation using a real-world external dataset (N=1686) confirmed the model’s generalizability (median Dice score: 0.82, median lesion-wise F1 score: 0.86). The algorithm’s outputs also demonstrated strong correlations with clinical scores (admission NIHSS and 90-day mRS) on par with or exceeding expert-derived results, underlining its clinical relevance. The paper presents how the skin cancer in forms of melanoma can be identified based on the digital image processing of the Iesion. The solution is based on the extraction of seven features (deterministic and statistic type) from the image of a skin lesion: perimeter, area, diameter, fractal dimension, lacunarity, histogram of oriented gradients, and local binary patterns. Each feature has attached a specific classifier and the diagnosis is obtained by using a voting scheme in the final classifier. The experimental results on a free database demonstrate that the method provides a high accuracy.

automatic language identification is a natural language processing problem that tries to determine the natural language of a given content. In this paper we present a statistical method for automatic language identification of written text using dictionaries containing stop words and diacritics. We propose different approaches that combine the two dictionaries to accurately determine the language of textual corpora. This method was chosen because stop words and diacritics are very specific to a language, although some languages have some similar words and special characters they are not all common. The languages taken into account were romance languages because they are very similar and usually it is hard to distinguish between them from a computational point of view. We have tested our method using a Twitter corpus and a news article corpus. Both corpora consists of UTF-8 encoded text, so the diacritics could be taken into account, in the case that the text has no diacritics only the stop words are used to determine the language of the text. The experimental results show that the proposed method has an accuracy of over 90% for small texts and over 99.8% for large texts. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Context. Microlensing events provide a unique way to detect and measure the masses of isolated, non-luminous objects, particularly dark stellar remnants. Under certain conditions, it is possible to measure the mass of these objects using photometry alone, specifically when a microlensing light curve displays a finite-source (FS) effect. This effect generally occurs in highly magnified light curves, i.e. when the source and the lens are very well aligned. Aims. In this study, we analyse Gaia Alerts and Gaia Data Release 3 datasets, identifying four moderate-to-high-magnification microlensing events without a discernible FS effect. The absence of this effect suggests a large Einstein radius, implying substantial lens masses. Methods. In each event, we constrain the FS effect and therefore establish lower limits for angular Einstein radius and lens mass. Additionally, we use the DarkLensCode software to obtain mass, distance, and brightness distribution for the lens based on the Galactic model. Results. Our analysis established lower mass limits of ∼ 0.2 M☉ for one lens and ∼ 0.3 − 0.5 M☉ for two others. DarkLensCode analysis supports these findings, estimating lens masses in the range of∼ 0.42 − 1.66 M☉ and dark lens probabilities exceeding 60%. These results strongly indicate that the lenses are stellar remnants, such as white dwarfs or neutron stars. Conclusions. While further investigations are required to confirm the nature of these lenses, we demonstrate a straightforward yet effective approach to identifying stellar remnant candidates. © 2025, CC BY.
