The paper deals with the PI and PID controllers settings. The research includes an overview of the most commonly used control quality criteria. It was assumed that the controlled system can be approximated by first order inertia with dead time. The control systems that includes the model as well as the PI and PID controllers were analyzed in context of control quality taking into account ITAE criterion. The research involved an analysis of the Nyquist diagrams. It enabled us to formulate a new method of tuning of PI and PID controllers. The results obtained with the proposed method were compared to the settings obtained with Ziegler-Nichols method. To illustrate the advantages of the proposed method the system step responses as well as their time and frequency indexes were compared and presented. The proposed method of the PI and PID controller tuning makes it possible to obtain a significant increase of the control quality.

In this work the authors of the hereof paper describe pilot study on implementation of fractional order filtering applied for the purpose of disparities detection in Beta Frequencies. The Beta waves frequency range can be split into three sections, where the information provided by particular section enables more accurate medical diagnosis. Spectral analysis used in this study allowed appropriate isolation of the Beta waves. Implementation of non-integer order filtering in such study is innovative and provided some promising results.

The paper deals with an analysis of features of on-off controllers. It was assumed that the control quality can be described by three distinctive indexes: the period, the amplitude and the mean value of the controlled signal in the steady state. The on-off controller with positive hysteresis was a basic form of the controller that was analyzed. To eliminate the disadvantages of this basic form the controller structure was augmented by inertia corrector. Its impact on mentioned above indicators was shown and described. To compensate the negative influence of inertia corrector on the mean value of the controlled signal, an additional proportional corrector was proposed. Its influence on control quality was shown and discussed. To show how easy it is to build the proposed structure of the controller, its exemplary implementation in the ladder logic language of the S7-1200 PLC was described.

A low-frequency nonlinear cantilever-beam-type electromagnetic vibration energy harvester is analyzed. The nonlinearity brought into system kinematics by the “magnets-on-magnets” action provides approximately 20 Hz frequency bandwidth. A simulation study based on solution of coupled dynamic equations of motion and equation of electric balance shows that within major part of the bandwidth the system is capable to produces the voltage with magnitude proportional to magnitude and frequency of the excitation force. At very low frequency and large external forces it falls, however into region where it exhibits chaotic behavior. In this paper the impact of the phenomenon on waveform of the generated voltage is analyzed using the Poincare maps and spectrograms. The results prove a detrimental impact of the phenomenon on overall performance of the system. In order to avoid the chaotic operation the impact of the hard-stop barriers of relative displacement is analyzed showing rise of generated power and reduction of a low-frequency limit of the bandwidth.

Individual instruction is recognized as an effective learning method which is highly supported by the so-called personalized, intelligent or adaptive systems. The main purpose of this learning method is to offer customized content, experience or tools, based on the learning profile of students (learning style, gender, prior knowledge, learning goals and so on), so as to improve the learning outcomes. There are two wide-known adaption techniques implemented by learning systems to provide individual instruction: adaptability and adaptivity. The first one allows the students to take control, e.g. The learning system provides choices to let the students adapt the steps, sequences, difficulty level, preferences, while the second empowers the system, which is able to build a student model and to provide learning support based on that model. The current paper presents PoliCAT-A learning system based on computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) principle, which implements the second adaption technique (adaptivity) to provide individual instruction. Furthermore, the proposed web-based application supports the new learning paradigms, e.g. student-centered learning, communities of practice, and constructivism in general and relies on the current technologies-Web 2.0 and social Web, as students are able to share one's results on social media. The system is described as a useful tool for self-regulated learning, answering thus at the question whether assessment may have a strong formative role in learning or not. Besides highlighting the key features of the application, the paper provides experimental results from a web programming course for forth year students enrolled in an engineering degree program, who used the developed system as a learning tool during one semester. This article discusses the new IEC61850 Standard for Substation Automation, considering its functionalities, requirements, and definitions. It provides an application-oriented approach through the capabilities that the new tools and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) allow. The work highlights the importance of modern IEDs, emphasizing the main characteristics that these components must possess to meet the requirements of IEC 61850. Based on the new possibilities that the development of the norm has brought, the work presents the potential functionalities discussed in recent articles in the main events of the community, and highlights how to perform these tasks and use the resources now available. Through the implementation of Logical Nodes (LNs), GOOSE messages (Generic Object-Oriented Substation Event) and other tools, the authors approach the logical schemes of interlocking, and transfers or locks execution. All features, functionalities and data presented in the article are based on results obtained in a real application from the 110/ 20kV Babadag 1 Wind Farm.
