In the last decades, social choice theory has gained a significant popularity. Its main application areas are social sciences, political sciences, economic sciences and computerscience. Computational social choice is a new research area situated at the intersection of social choice theory and computerscience. Another popular and relatively new research area is swarm intelligence that aims to propose and use bio-inspired algorithms for solving optimization problems. In this paper we propose a methodology of comparing various swarm intelligence algorithms using voting methods (an important topic in social choice theory). Also, as a case study, we use our methodology to compare three swarm intelligence algorithms (Particle Swarm Optimization, Cat Swarm Optimization, and Artificial Bee Colony) on several minimization functions. For the interpretation of our comparison results, we use two important theorems: No Free Lunch Theorem (from optimization theory) and Arrow's Impossibility Theorem (from voting theory).

Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) are of great importance in identifying the genetic variants associated with traits/diseases. Due to the high number of candidate SNPs some filtering techniques are necessary to be applied. The aim of the study was to develop the comprehensive approach allowing for detailed analysis of both SNP-gene and SNP-miRNA-gene relations. We elaborated and optimized the novel signal analysis pipeline improving significantly the results of the analysis on genotype-phenotype interplay. Direct links between genotype results and gene expression levels were enriched by detailed analysis of SNP-miRNA-gene interactions at both mature miRNA structure/seed region and target binding site level. The proposed technique was applied to the data on lymphocyte radiation response and increased by almost 100% number of potential functional SNPs.

The paper discusses the design process of a programmable logic controller implemented by means of FPGA device. Designed PLC is to be compliant with EN 61131-3 standard. Diiferent aspects of instruction list and hardware architecture designing are presented, e.g. PLC structure with particular emphasis on central processing unit or memory map. Conclusions on an EN 61131-3 Standard are also shown. The developed PLC is implemented using FPGA device. This gives opportunity to develop interesting solutions. For example, using dual port RAM gives us opportunity to develop bit/word access without necessity of masking bits. Up to date FPGA devices have also disadvantage - there are no tri-state buffers inside. This is the reason for using multiplexers that control traffic on busses.

The past decades brought substantial improvements in quality of life, average life expectancy, and medical solutions to previously incurable illness. However, little progress has been made in healing or improving quality of life for cognitively impaired patients (Alzheimer, Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia, front temporal dementia, Parkinson's disease or corticobasal degeneration). The past years have brought forth numerous AmI solutions for monitoring daily activities of cognitive impaired patients, but their real world application is generally limited by privacy, price and deployment constrains. The current paper proposes a household object interaction system that uses a novel algorithm to provide information for behavioral monitoring while preserving intimacy and keeping real world implementation effort at acceptable levels.

The paper covers issue of conducting advanced research of electrical race car participating in international competition called Sileverline Corporate Challenge. Process of designing race cars in Silesian Greenpower team is aided by a professional engine test stand built particularly in purpose of this research. Phase of testing and simulation is an important part of the implementation of new technologies. Properly developed solutions and test procedures are able to significantly shorten development time and reduce design costs. Testing process must be controlled by a modular and flexible application, easy to modify and ensuring safety. This paper describes the concept of object-oriented programming in LabVIEW and exemplary architecture of object-oriented control application designed to control engine test stand of the electrical race car. Eventually, the task of application will be to steer the electromagnetic brake and the engine load torque to perform according to data from the actual race track. During the designing process of the car, minimizing energy losses and maximizing powertrain efficiency are the main aspects taken into consideration. One of the crucial issues to accomplish these goals is to maintain optimal performance of the motor by applying effective cooling. This paper concentrates on the possibilities of the application of the virtual commissioning procedure for the design and verification of the control systems for the continuous industrial processes. After short review and defining the motivation and recognizing the bottlenecks, the case study is presented. It is based on the laboratory pneumatic setup representing the nonlinear continuous process of the higher relative degree. The stages of its modeling are presented and the potential possibilities of the application of the virtual commissioning for its control are discussed, based on the practical results.
