To engineer the factory of the future the paper argues for a reference model that is not necessary restricted to the control component, but integrates the physical and human components as well. This is due to the real need to accommodate the latest achievements in factory automation where the human is not merely playing a simple and clear role inside the control-loop, but is becoming a composite factor in a highly automated system (“man in the mesh”). The concept is demonstrated by instantiating the anthropocentric cyber-physical reference architecture for smart factories (ACPA4SF) in a concrete case study that needs to accommodate the ongoing researches from the SmartFactory KL facility (e.g. augmented reality, mobile interaction technology, virtual training of human operators).

One of the techniques which can be used to quantitatively evaluate images statistically is the so-called random-walk approach. The resulting Hurst exponent is a measure of the complexity of the picture. Especially long, fine elements in the image, such as fibres, influence the Hurst exponent significantly. Thus, determination of the Hurst exponent has been suggested as new method to measure the hairiness of yarns or knitted fabrics, since existing hairiness measurement instruments are based on different measurement principles which are not comparable. While the principal usability of this method for hairiness detection has been shown in former projects, the absolute value of the calculated Hurst exponents depends on the technique to take the photographic image of a sample, to transfer it into a monochrome picture, and on possible image processing steps. This article gives an overview of edge detection filters, possible definitions of the threshold value between black and white for the transformation into a monochrome image, etc. It shows how these parameters should be chosen in case of typical textile samples and correlates the challenges of this novel method with well-known problems of common techniques to measure yarn and fabric hairiness.

Research in human emotion has provided insight into how emotions influence human cognitive structures and processes, such as perception, memory management, planning and behavior. This information also provides new ideas to researchers in the fields of affective computing and artificial life about how emotion simulation can be used in order to improve artificial agent behavior. This paper describes an emotion-driven artificial agent architecture based on rule-based systems that not attempts to provide complex believable behavior and representation for virtual characters, as well as attempts to improve agent performance and effectiveness by mimicking human emotion mechanics such as motivation, attention narrowing and the effects of emotion on memory. To this end, our approach uses an inference engine, a truth maintenance system and emotion simulation to achieve reasoning, fast decision-making intelligent artificial characters.

ISO/IEEE 11073 (X73) has raised great interest from the research community since its announcement. X73 has several vulnerabilities that have to be addressed before reaching mainstream usage. This paper identifies an important feature the association mechanism lacks: the Manager should have the means of initiating the communication. The paper discusses the importance of this capability, highlighting several scenarios where the bidirectional initiation is required. The paper further presents the proposed solution, which is designed to be optional, in order to maintain backward compatibility. A complete scenario where the Manager initiates the association procedure is presented, with illustration of the exchanged messages. Finally, implementation guidelines are provided.

This paper presents a computationally efficient method for modelling an impact of the converter drive on the power grid. The formalized variable structure method (FVSM) allows for comprehensive studies of the effect on the power grid and examining the relation between this effect and the number of drive and feeding line parameters. In order to obtain a comprehensive model along with the model of the power grid, the parameters that are applied originate from a drive of a coal-fired power station. These parameters have been determined based on assessment and estimation. The estimation process was conducted with the aid of a model that allows for the commutation of power electronic elements. The authors confirmed that the model was correct by comparing empirical and theoretical voltage and current waveforms. Harmonic content of the voltage and current in the power grid which feeds the drive are considered to be the measure of the converter drive impact on the power grid. The standard method for the reduction of a harmonic content in the voltage and current involves the application of line reactors and distribution or converter transformers. As an example, the authors determine the impact of the drive on the power grid with respect to the adopted parameters of the line reactor. This example presents FVSM abilities with regard to simulation of complex systems that contain power grid components and converter drives.

The paper addresses the problem of real-time monitoring and intelligent forecasting for indoors ecological phenomena. The process yields a collection of ecological parameters viewed as distributed time series. Data acquired by means of a wireless network of sensors are modeled by using complex algorithms in view of prediction. An evolutionary searching strategy (Particle Swarm Optimization-PSO) is proposed in order to intelligently find the most accurate prediction model. This strategy is adapted to predictors like PARMA, PARMAX, KARMA and FORWAVER, which are implemented within the monitoring and forecasting system, in order to estimate the future evolution of some ecological parameters. The monitoring system was effectively integrated in an industrial application dealing with automatic irrigation of a small greenhouse. The forecasting simulation results with real data and a comparative assessment of best predictor performances obtained with PSO are presented in the end.

In this paper comparison of the two innovative signal processing methods for analysis of both EEG and EMG biomedical signals is in short presented. The reason for that is caused by the fact, that nowadays the broad analysis of various biomedical signals is extremely popular. The first method presented in this paper relies on kernel density estimators application. Implementation of such method enables construction of densitograms for the examined bio-signals. One of the biggest advantages of this method is that it allows to obtain statistically filtered signals, which results in making the whole signal processing task significantly quicker. The second method described in this paper is based on basic mathematical operations only. Despite its simplicity the whole process can be implemented on almost any hardware platform, including those with very limited computational capabilities. Also it makes the task quick. In accordance with the conducted experiments - the method is also efficient and as it can also be implemented on embedded platform and the algorithm can be rewritten in any programming language, the potential application of this method is wide.
