The objective of this paper is to design a real-time control solution for chemical processes, namely the ethylene reactor, the key-installation in the petrochemical industry. The controller used is lag or lead controller, a simple yet suitable control tool. This article deals with the problem of finding all first order controllers that stabilize a given LTI continuous time or discrete time plant and attain various performance specifications. The main tool for the controller design is Neimarks D-decomposition, which was originally introduced in 1949 in the Russian control literature. The process data have been measured from an assembly of pyrolysis reactors on the petrochemical platform from Pitesti, Romania.

The article presents a solution for the teleoperation of a robot hand and arm designed as a complex system that captures human motion and controls the robot into mimicking the human actions. This hybrid system allows the robot execution to be guided by human actions, therefore decreasing the planning complexity and allowing the robot to perform more complex movements and to use the human capacity of adapting to unexpected situations.

In this paper, we present a new technique for detecting and localising defects in metallic structures, using ultrasound non-destructive inspection. This technique consists in applying a dual path inspection and the matched filter to a stepped frequency-type signal. This new technique is compared with classical non-destructive testing approaches. An experimental setup is presented that allows us to validate the proposed method.

This paper presents a cloud-based secure, intelligent, interlinked and interactive application development platform that is able to collect and transmit information from a variety of data sources across multiple wireless communication systems. The platform is called S4I and it is based on a three layer scalable architecture, facilitating communication interoperability. Web-based applications, hosted on cloud servers, can be developed and customized according to the client's needs and accessed by the end user from anywhere in the world. A new adaptive comb filtering algorithm, capable of tracking the fundamental frequency and amplitudes of different frequency components of a nonstationary harmonic signal embedded in white measurement noise, is proposed. Frequency tracking characteristics of the new scheme are studied analytically, proving (under Gaussian assumptions and optimal tuning) its statistical efficiency for quasi-linear frequency changes. Laboratory tests show that the proposed algorithm can be successfully used for active control of MRI noise.

Vast arrays of reporting are nowadays in use, allowing ever increasing flexibility and control over the displayed results. However, as IT developed and became available to all business domains, the number of reports used by companies started to challenge the possibility of good management. The European funded project Questor aims to create a revolutionary product that will eliminate the complexities inherent in the report management workflow. The motivation of this project is to substitute the time consuming manual search for information in reports with an automatic one. The final purpose is to make querying the report database as simple as addressing a question in natural language. This paper gives an overview over the concept of the Questor project, its software architecture and its preliminary results.

Despite the decades of research on texture image information, texture characterization remains a competition for the scientific community because a rigorous mathematical definition of texture was not yet decided. Therefore, texture analysis and classification needs depth research and continuous improvement. In this paper we study state-space realizations of Linear and Time-Invariant (LTI) systems. Motivated by biochemical reaction networks, Gonçalves and Warnick have recently introduced the notion of a Dynamical Structure Functions (DSF), a particular factorization of the system's transfer function matrix that elucidates the interconnection structure in dependencies between manifest variables. We build onto this work by showing an intrinsic connection between a DSF and certain sparse left coprime factorizations. By establishing this link, we provide an interesting systems theoretic interpretation of sparsity patterns of coprime factors. In particular we show how the sparsity of these coprime factors allows for a given LTI system to be implemented as a network of LTI sub-systems. We examine possible applications in distributed control such as the design of a LTI controller that can be implemented over a network with a pre-specified topology.

There are many types of bio-signals with various control application prospects. In this work possible control application domain of electroencephalographic signal obtained from an easily available, inexpensive EEG headset - Emotiv EPOC was presented. This work also involved application of an embedded system platform. That solution caused limits in choosing an appropriate signal processing method, as embedded platforms characterise with a little efficiency and low computing power. Potential implementation of the embedded platform enables to extend the possible future application of the proposed BCI. It also gives more flexibility, as the platform is able to simulate various environments. In this work traditional, statistical methods were neither used nor described.
