Software-Defined Networking (SDN) represents a significant shift in network architecture, providing exceptional programmability, flexibility, and simplified management. However, this paradigm shift introduces a unique set of security challenges that must be addressed to fully realize the potential of SDN. This paper examines the security issues in SDN environments, detailing the threats and vulnerabilities at various layers of the SDN architecture, including the control plane, data plane, and application plane. Through an extensive review of current literature, critical security challenges such as controller attacks, data plane breaches, and vulnerabilities in inter-plane communications are identified. Existing security solutions and mitigation strategies, such as authentication and authorization mechanisms, encryption techniques, and intrusion detection systems, are also explored. Furthermore, the paper discusses recent advances and emerging trends in SDN security, offering insights into ongoing research and future directions. The findings underscore the importance of robust security measures in ensuring the reliability and integrity of SDN deployments, providing a foundation for future innovation and development in this dynamic field.

MISROBÆRTA: TRANSFORMERS VERSUS MISINFORMATION

Misinformation is considered a threat to our democratic values and principles. The spread of such content on social media polarizes society and undermines public discourse by distorting public perceptions and generating social unrest while lacking the rigor of traditional journalism. Transformers and transfer learning proved to be state-of-the-art methods for multiple wellknown natural language processing tasks. In this paper, we propose MisRoBÆRTa, a novel transformer-based deep neural ensemble architecture for misinformation detection. MisRoBÆRTa takes advantage of two state-of-the art transformers, i.e., BART and RoBERTa, to improve the performance of discriminating between real news and different types of fake news. We also benchmarked and evaluated the performances of multiple transformers on the task of misinformation detection. For training and testing, we used a large real-world news articles dataset (i.e., 100,000 records) labeled with 10 classes, thus addressing two shortcomings in the current research: (1) increasing the size of the dataset from small to large, and (2) moving the focus of fake news detection from binary classification to multi-class classification. For this dataset, we manually verified the content of the news articles to ensure that they were correctly labeled. The experimental results show that the accuracy of transformers on the misinformation detection problem was significantly influenced by the method employed to learn the context, dataset size, and vocabulary dimension. We observe empirically that the best accuracy performance among the classification models that use only one transformer is obtained by BART, while DistilRoBERTa obtains the best accuracy in the least amount of time required for fine-tuning and training. However, the proposed MisRoBÆRTa outperforms the other transformer models in the task of misinformation detection. This paper describes the design and software implementation of a wearable prototype that allows users to monitor the vital signs of COVID-19 patients in quarantine areas. This prototype consists of two parts, the bracelet, andthe Base control unit (BCU). The bracelet is built with ESP8266 and sensors as main components, as well as the battery and other parts needed to fulfill the system's purpose (monitoring the vital signs of COVID-19 patients). At the same time, the Raspberry Pi (SCB) single board computer and GSM/GPRS/HAT are the main components of the Basic control Unit (BCU). The current work describes the main parts of the pseudocode, as well as the activity diagram for the microcontroller and Raspberry Pi. This paper describes the mechanism of sending alert messages, whereby the system's ability to configure two types of alert messages;(1) physician Messages (these Messages will be sent to the physicianassociated with the patient if one or more vital signs reach a critical value;these messages contain all measurements of a patient's vital signs);(2) Authorize messages (these messages will be sent if the quarantine rules are violated;the patient's location will be sent to the authorized person as a Google Mapslink). Also, this paper describes the graphical user interface for communication, management,. and interaction between the users of the system. © 2022 IEEE.

An important aspect related to the effects of agricultural activities on the environment is represented by the nutrient loss in water and air (specifically nitrogen). The interactions between catchments hydrological processes, management of farm activities, climate changes and nitrogen losses constitute a complex phenomenon yet not well understood, being an important concern from the sustainable agriculture perspective. Nitrogen can be lost with water as leaching or runoff, or as gas as ammonia volatilization. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is particularly problematic because it is also a powerful greenhouse gas. The goal of the current article is to present innovative digital techniques to advance in understanding of this phenomena through an Information System that integrates Artificial Intelligence techniques such as Semantic Technologies and Machine Learning (ML) into Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) to support smart farming and sustainable agriculture.

In response to the escalating demand for electricity, the aging process and inherent failures in power lines have become unavoidable challenges in their operational integrity. This research addresses the imperative need for a robust method to detect damage in power insulator disc images, introducing a novel feature extraction technique grounded in color intensity profile transformation and ensemble learning. For the purposes of the research, a specific dataset was developed based on publicly available images of power insulators. The collection consists of 9232 images of insulator discs which included 2184 images of damaged discs. The discernible damages include breakages and burnouts. Two distinct analysis variants were employed. In the first variant (V1), two classification groups were selected: disc with damages and disc without damages. In the second variant (V2), three classification groups were selected: discs without damage, broken discs, and burnout discs. The described research was divided into two successive stages. In the first of them (S1), the transformed color intensity profiles for the prepared data set were built and various machine learning models for their classification were trained and evaluated. In the next stage (S2), previously developed, highest efficient machine learning models, were used to make the detection of various damaged types of overhead line insulator discs. For the first stage of research high-performance results and a high value of the F1 score parameters were obtained (F1 score = 0.999 for the first variant (S1V1) and F1 score = 0.992 for the second variant (S1V2). In the second stage of research and the first variant (S2V1), the highest result of the F1 score was 0.932 and for the second variant (S2V2) F1 score was 0.930. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

SIMPLEX: A LEXICAL TEXT SIMPLIFICATION ARCHITECTURE

Text simplification (TS) is the process of generating easy-to-understand sentences from a given sentence or piece of text. The aim of TS is to reduce both the lexical (which refers to vocabulary complexity and meaning) and syntactic (which refers to the sentence structure) complexity of a given text or sentence without the loss of meaning or nuance. In this paper, we present SIMPLEX, a novel simplification architecture for generating simplified English sentences. To generate a simplified sentence, the proposed architecture uses either word embeddings (i.e., Word2Vec) and perplexity, or sentence transformers (i.e., BERT, RoBERTa, and GPT2) and cosine similarity. The solution is incorporated into a user-friendly and simple-to-use software. We evaluate our system using two metrics, i.e., SARI, and Perplexity Decrease. Experimentally, we observe that the transformer models outperform the other models in terms of the SARI score. However, in terms of Perplexity, the Word-Embeddings-based models achieve the biggest decrease. Thus, the main contributions of this paper are: (1) We propose a new Word Embedding and Transformer based algorithm for text simplification;(2) We design SIMPLEX - a modular novel text simplification system - that can provide a baseline for further research;and (3) We perform an in-depth analysis of our solution and compare our results with two state-of-the-art models, i.e., LightLS [19] and NTS-w2v [44]. Split Cost Function based Single-Horizon Finite-Set Model Predictive control for Boost Converter with Loading Current Estimation

This paper presents a robust single-horizon finite-set model predictive control (FS-MPC) method for controlling the output voltage of boost converters. Unlike the long-horizon FS-MPC approach, which addresses the non-minimum phase (NMP) behavior of the converter by extending the prediction horizon (thereby increasing computational effort), the proposed method ensures stable voltage regulation by incorporating inductor current regulation into the cost function. To achieve this, the desired inductor current is calculated based on input-output power balance theory. Unlike recent studies that require an additional sensor to measure the loading current, this paper develops a loading current estimation approach to eliminate the need for extra current sensors, thereby enhancing the robustness of the proposed FS-MPC method. Additionally, over-current protection, which is typically absent in conventional FS-MPC used for direct voltage regulation, is also incorporated into the proposed method. The conventional cost function is also modified to tackle the NMP behavior more effectively. The performance of the proposed method in regulating the output voltage is evaluated through simulation results. Finally, its effectiveness across a wide range of output power and various load characteristics, including resistive, constant power, and constant current loads, is validated via experimental results. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is not only able to eliminate the overshoot and undershoot, but can also improve the settling time by 41% compared to a well-tuned conventional cascaded PI controller. In addition, the proposed method can reduce the computational burden by 84% compared to the conventional long-horizon FS-MPC approach. © 2013 IEEE.

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, and it is caused by a variety of dermatological conditions. Identifying abnormalities from skin images is an important pre-diagnostic step to assist physicians in determining the patient’s condition. Thus, to aid dermatologists in the diagnosis process, we proposed five CNN-based classification approaches namely ResNet-101, DenseNet-121, GoogLeNet, VGG16, and MobileNetV2 architectures on which the transfer learning process was applied. The HAM10000-N database consisting of 7,120 images, which was obtained from the original HAM10000 dataset through an augmentation process, was used to train the proposed methods. Moreover, the images from the HAM10000-N were pre-processed by removing hair with the DullRazor algorithm. To evaluate and compare the performance of all networks five metrics were calculated: accuracy, precision, recall, and Fl-score. The best results for the seven-class classification of the HAM10000-N dataset were obtained for DenseNet-121 architecture with 87% accuracy, 0.871 precision, 0.87 recall and 0.872 F1-score.

In the context of DOORS, a medium-scale distributed system, running on tens of 'normal PCs and/or embedded devices, we propose a solution for the problem of efficient allocation of execution and storage resources. We distinguish between the node-level problem of scheduling the execution of object methods and the system-level problem of optimally placing objects on nodes such that locality is maximised: inter-communicating objects are kept as close to each other as possible and the most 'active' objects are hosted on nodes with the highest processing capacity and/or the highest amount of memory available. DOORS aims for architectural simplicity and achieves this by providing more control to the solution implementer, such that the behaviour of the object balancer can be tailored to the specifics of the problem addressed by the implementation. The proposed design for the balancer provides a simple relocation service, and a set of perpetually updated set of metrics, such that the solution implementer may define, 'plug in' and enforce a balancing policy out of an unlimited number of alternatives. © 2021 IEEE.
