This review aims to contribute to the quest for artificial general intelligence by examining neuroscience and cognitive psychology methods for potential inspiration. Despite the impressive advancements achieved by deep learning models in various domains, they still have shortcomings in abstract reasoning and causal understanding. Such capabilities should be ultimately integrated into artificial intelligence systems in order to surpass data-driven limitations and support decision making in a way more similar to human intelligence. This work is a vertical review that attempts a wide-ranging exploration of brain function, spanning from lower-level biological neurons, spiking neural networks, and neuronal ensembles to higher-level concepts such as brain anatomy, vector symbolic architectures, cognitive and categorization models, and cognitive architectures. The hope is that these concepts may offer insights for solutions in artificial general intelligence. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Domain-specific data characteristics: A study on meaning of stylometric sub-concepts and in-class imbalance

In the context of data imbalance probably the most investigated problem is imbalance of classes, as learning from the data with this characteristic makes detection of existing patterns for all classes more difficult. However, other problems related to imbalance also exists and the paper addresses such cases where classes are balanced, but there is in-class imbalance. Such imbalance can be caused by uneven representation of sub-concepts. When there is a noticeable difference between the numbers of samples belonging to sub-concepts, this can turn the under-represented sub-concepts into disjuncts. Data irregularities of this type can hinder recognition, therefore actions are typically taken to restore balance. In the investigations described, the issue was studied in the stylometric domain and various classifiers were applied to the data that was balanced, then imbalanced, and finally with restored balance. The experiments show that the specifics of the domain of application can put its own mark on the data which is difficult to overcome by standard processing such as under- or oversampling. Observed dependence on a learner and dataset makes the issue even more complex and layered, and shows the need for deeper studies.

The paper presents research dedicated to observations of relations between attribute properties and discretisation. In the investigations described, the gradually increasing sets of features were discretised by selected approaches, and several variants of data were constructed. The continuous, partially discrete, and completely translated datasets were explored by the chosen classifiers and their performance studied in the context of a number of discretised attributes, discretisation procedures, and the way of processing of features and datasets. The stylometric problem of authorship attribution was the machine learning task under study. The experimental results enable to observe closer the specificity of style-markers employed as characteristic features, and indicate conditions for efficient recognition of authorship. They can be extended to other application domains with similar characteristics.

This paper proposes a method to reduce the energy consumption of an industrial disassembly process implemented on a production line by using an energy-efficient secondary disassembly process. In the case of defective products, the flow directs the simple product with priority to be disassembled in workstation (WS) 7. Therefore, all defective products are redirected to WS7. The disassembly of all simple products in WS7 is problematic for two reasons: the power consumption of WS7 is high compared to the other workstations, additionally there is an increased possibility of bottlenecks in the production line due to the high disassembly time. The proposed solution to reduce the possibility of deadlock and reduce power consumption is to redirect the defective products to the flexible cell (FC). Handling robots located in neighboring stations will participate collaboratively in the disassembly process. The control structure ensures that the two robots 'meet' in the boundary plane of WS3 with WS4 and disassemble each component through collaborative tasks. Collaborative control of disassembly is thought of as a solution to the global 'fluidization' of production, removing the bottleneck, from the overall flow, but also as an ingenious solution to reduce energy consumption. © 2023 IEEE.

Sarcasm detection has established itself as one of the more difficult Natural Language Processing tasks, due to the complex nature of sarcasm. This paper aims to benchmark the performance of state-of-the-art models like BERT, RoBERTa, ALBERT and GPT-3 when faced with this task. The dataset selected is MUStARD, which has increased in popularity in recent years, especially for multimodal tasks, and is one of the most qualitative and data rich dataset. An untuned GPT-3 based model was selected as the baseline and all the other models were fine-tuned using the textual data present in MUStARD, mainly the context and utterance information. The best performer was found to be the GPT-3 fine-tuned model, with an F1 score of 77. This is in line with the reported feats of GPT-3 based models that have popularized in recent months and reaffirms the superiority of GPT-3. Future avenues of research are then presented and explored, and the conclusions are drawn.

automatic interpretation of morphological metrics recently gained great interest in medical imaging applications. For ultrasound image analysis various artificial intelligence algorithms emerged with the aim to overcome drawbacks related to measurement variability and image quality. Advanced methods of automatic analysis can meet the need to centralize a large amount of information from these images, to accurately interpret the medical data, and to minimize the rate of human error. In the current paper, we propose a solution designed for automating the detection of early pregnancy from endovaginal ultrasound scans. A YOLOv3 convolutional neural network was configured to detect the gestational sac, the yolk sac, and the embryo given the potential to facilitate ultrasound diagnostic in obstetrics by automating the detection of these early pregnancy elements. The database created for this research included 349 images evaluating incipient pregnancies with gestational age ranging from 40 to 70 days. The results obtained support the use of YOLOv3 for the precise detection of ultrasound elements specific to an incipient pregnancy.

Output Tracking control of a Nonlinear System Based on Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Model: Generalized Partial Eigenstructure Assignment Approach

This paper introduces an innovative optimal control approach to achieve output tracking while incorporating H2-performance specifications in a specific class of nonlinear dynamics modeled by the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model (TSFM). The primary innovation lies in extending partial eigenstructure assignment to TSFM-based nonlinear systems within the framework of sliding mode control (SMC). We propose a two-step methodology for designing optimal sliding surface gains. Initially, optimal state feedback gains are computed for each rule consequence containing a linear subsystem, adhering to predetermined eigenvalues and satisfying H2-performance criteria. Subsequently, using a convex combination, the overall state feedback gain is calculated and utilized to design sliding matrix gains. The sliding matrix gains are then determined by strategically combining previously calculated state-feedback gains in a convex optimization problem. We reframe the output tracking strategy as a stabilization problem using a virtual control input and reformulate the optimization task concerning tracking state errors. This process yields state feedback gains, sliding gains, and the formulation of the virtual control input. The effectiveness of our approach is verified through comprehensive simulations, emphasizing its capability in addressing output tracking challenges within nonlinear systems. © 2013 IEEE.

The use of Agriculture Intelligent Systems (AISs) in Iraq has become popular among farmers. The greenhouse is a solution for plant growth, which uses an effective microclimate to simulate seasons and to use alternative energy sources like solar, thermal, and photovoltaic systems for microclimate control. Greenhouses are considered a successful solution with developments and achievements in the technology of this field. However, problems like high costs, difficulties in installation and maintenance, or the need for some procedures should be considered. Because Iraq is close to the equator (3669 km), it receives sufficient solar power. It also has large areas available for the building of solar greenhouse systems. The farmers need an affordable and functional smart greenhouse to enable and encourage them to use the environment efficiently. We intend to develop low-cost, accurate, and easy-to-use greenhouse systems controlled by artificial intelligence algorithms. Farmers will be able to control the greenhouse by using simple commands. Machine learning algorithms provide real-time and effective analysis that could support farmers in decision-making and provide relevant data for researchers and policymakers. AISs algorithms can lead to a sustainable and productive agriculture system. The system can be used in Iraq with sufficient government support and subsidy. © 2022 IEEE.

The widespread application of touchscreen technology brought a huge potential for future flight deck design with advanced human-computer interactive mode. The integrated flight displays that enable touchscreen input have been widely examined and validated in the aviation industry. The current research proposed an innovative surface control inceptor based on the touchscreen to control aircraft attitude in flight operations. Fifty-six participants were invited to a flight simulator experiment using the touchscreen and sidestick to perform landing tasks in the scenarios without turbulence and with turbulence. Participants’ heart rate variability (HRV) parameters during flight tasks were collected as biomarkers of mental workload. The two-way repeated measures ANOVA results demonstrated significant interactions of participants’ mean R-R interval (RR) and mean heart rate (HR) between inceptor and turbulence. The simple main effect analysis indicated that in the turbulence scenario, participants’ mean HR significantly decreased and mean RR increased using the touchscreen controller compared to the sidestick inceptor. Furthermore, the standard deviation of normal to normal R-R intervals (SDNN) was higher while performing landing tasks based on the touchscreen in turbulence and non-turbulence scenarios. These findings revealed significant decreases in workload during landing operations from both mental and physical aspects. The applicability of the touchscreen-based control surface inceptor in flight operations was confirmed. This provided a new vision of the advanced aircraft flight control system and future flight deck design for next-generation aviation operations. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

It is well known that nowadays children tend to spend lot of time playing games on mobile devices at the expense of reading books. The current research aims to explore ways to design and develop a mobile application, attractive for children, that uses voice recognition technology and gamification techniques to help children read more and better and to track the progress of reading. The application is implemented with Flutter, Dart and Firebase and is addressed to children, the books being made available in encyclopedia format. By integrating technologies such as NLP and gamification the application aims to improve reading fluency among children, but also to give them the opportunity to accumulate new and exciting information in the same time.
