The process of detecting and identifying errors early in the life-cycle of any software has many challenges. The tools used for model checking are however becoming more effective and usable because they are helping the identification of errors. This has empowered users to apply model checking to large-scale problems. The process of validating the model implementation is normally harder. We created a Promela model by using a model checker called Spin in order to verify the Medical Social Media System based on Social Oriented Networks by using M-Health technology and sensors in smartphones and bracelets for medical data acquisition, in order for it to be used in the healthcare sector in Iraq. For the Promela Model, we first described the behaviors of the Medical Social Media Systems via UML timelines. After that, we combined the UML timelines in state diagrams that were finally transformed into a Promela model and verified with the Spin model checker. © 2019 IEEE.

Background and Objective: Videodermoscopy is the gold standard in melanoma diagnosis. A new research trend aims to support specialists’ work by automating this examination method, but most research focuses on developing detectors to replace dermatologists. Our study aims to present a novel idea which focuses on supporting the examination process instead of completely automating it. Instead of detecting and classifying all naevi each time, our approach focuses on full screening at the first visit and shortening the examination at subsequent visits. During the following examinations, images of all naevi are taken by supporting staff and are compared with previously taken images using feature-matching or co-registration-based algorithms. An unmatched naevus needs to be checked by the specialist, meaning that a new naevus appeared or an old one had changed. Methods: The similarity between images (ranging from 0% to 100%) was obtained with characteristic points searching (ORB method) and co-registration-based methods. No dataset presenting changes of naevi over time exists, so augmenting the images from PH2 and HAM10000 datasets was required to simulate the time flow. Results: The decision bound was set, so the true positive rate of each method was equal to 99%, giving the specificity of ORB equal to 97% (PH2) and 89% (HAM10000). Similar tests were performed using a co-registration algorithm giving specificity equal to 23% (PH2) and 19% (HAM10000). Conclusions: We believe that employing our approach will allow supporting staff to perform screening without experts’ help, decreasing examination time and costs and increasing the accessibility of dermoscopic examinations. © 2025 The Authors

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) and Home Monitoring System (HMS) frameworks came into focus as an alternative to classic healthcare services for the ageing world population. Both overwhelmed healthcare systems and the susceptibility of older adults to develop severe complications are indicators that in the near future there will be a shift to a decentralized monitoring paradigm for chronic disease *** paper introduces the SMARTCARE system, a solution that integrates both AAL and HMS features in order to provide maximum flexibility in defining monitoring scenarios through the use of IoT devices. More, the system tackles the lack of uniformity that exists in standardization across the IoT field through the use of a modular architecture.

Online teaching is a reality and a necessity especially since the appearance of the COVID-19 outbreak. In order to facilitate the proper conduct of this process, several steps are required: to have in place a secure infrastructure to store data and to handle the data flow, to manage the student and teacher information, and to facilitate the teacher-student communication so students have access to courses and teachers can properly evaluate the students. This paper presents a distributed architecture for identity management of university students and teachers, while considering aspects pertaining to user privacy and security. Also, a solution is proposed for easy integration with third-party solutions that facilitate online teaching and learning, i.e., Microsoft Office 365, Google G Suite and the Moodle educational platform, and access to the university's Wi-Fi network with the same credentials. The implementation of the solution at the "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iasi, Romania allowed classes to be carried out online and students to be evaluated also online.

Remote monitoring the progress or deterioration of the patient's physiological parameters at their homes is vital for medical personnel or caretakers to provide medical assistance in case of an early alert caused by some unusual activity that may be happen. The main purpose of the article is to propose a generalized architecture, including specifications for medical devices used, for design and implementation of an alert based medical system. The system will be used for remote monitoring of physiological parameters of patients and/or elderly people at their homes, as a part of a more complex Home Automation System and Medical Monitoring System. The system will be used with patients especially suffering from chronic illness or elderly people that need to be monitored from medical point of view. Briefly the proposed system contains wireless medical sensors and devices connected together to a gateway used to acquire and process the raw data transmitted by the medical devices, performs local processing and activates the alerts when necessary and forwards the measurements to the cloud for storing and further processing.

Microbiological and biological analysis of polymer-oxide coatings formed on dental implants enriched with clindamycin

Coatings on dental implants are still being developed in order to obtain an ideal balance between their cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties. This paper presents the bacteriostatic and biological properties of oxide-polymer layers with clindamycin on titanium dental implants. A layer was formed on the surface of titanium implants, which was composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and clindamycin. The surface morphology was analyzed using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Clindamycin loaded into the polymer was successfully found to inhibit S. aureus and slightly inhibit E. coli bacteria. The average inhibition zone obtained for S. aureus was 14 mm. Only single bacteria were found to be adhered to the implant surface, and changes in their morphology were observed (SEM analysis). The cytocompatibility of the implant extracts was evaluated via the Alamar Blue test and by using cytometry techniques. More than 95 % of L929 cells were found to be living after 24 h of their culture with extracts collected from the implants with hybrid coatings. Additionally, the stability of different concentrations of clindamycin in aqueous solutions at various temperatures was analyzed. It was found that the storage of clindamycin at 4 °C caused the lowest changes in concentration. The concentration of clindamycin influenced both the L929 cells’ viability and bacterial inhibition. © 2025 The Authors

Model-based Dependability Analysis of Fault-tolerant Inertial Navigation System: A Practical Experience Report

Model-based systems engineering approaches are commonly used to develop safetycritical mechatronic systems. Recently, a new SysML-based method for the dependability analysis of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has been introduced. The method consists of three main steps: (i) creation of a structural SysML model using building blocks from the underlying UAV dependability profile that extends the model with block-level reliability and time properties, (ii) transformation of the semi-formal SysML model into a formal Dual-Graph Error Propagation Model (DEPM) that captures relevant structural and behavioral properties of the system, (iii) DEPM-based evaluation of system dependability metrics using Markov chain models and state-of-the-art probabilistic model checking techniques. This paper describes the practitioner experiences and lessons learned after the application of the aforementioned method to a sophisticated real-world embedded fault-tolerant inertial navigation system. The case study revealed two particular limitations that have been overcome by the optimization of the method against the state-space explosion of underlying Markov chain models and the introduction of a new computation algorithm for DEPMs with realistic extremely low fault activation probabilities.

The research of the authors is focused on presenting a practical multidisciplinary experiment - an elevator simulator to relate theory and practice inside of a lot of disciplines and to bring the “real world” into a useful case study for electrical and control engineering education. Through the existence of interesting experiments, students gain motivation either to continue thinking and improving new solutions for building and control of elevators. The concept of the modern elevator is presented in this paper from the perspective of integration of current technological equipment like a programmable logic controller, inverter, encoder, human-machine-interface on which students can develop various control strategies using a SCADA system. The paper presents the some exercises that students can perform on the existent simulator.
