The paper presents a method for estimation of converter drive parameters. This estimation encompassed three types of drives, i.e. a static Scherbius drive, a drive with a brushless direct current (BLDC) motor and a drive with a voltage inverter. For drive modelling and parameter estimation, the author implemented original programmes written in FORTRAN. As well as these, the paper describes an objective function applied for the estimation. The author also compares gradient and gradientless methods, which are applied for minimization of the objective function. Finally, the author explains the estimation results for example drives, focusing on the coincidence of theoretical and empirical waveforms. The abovementioned procedure led to the general rule, which facilitates estimation efficiency.

Virtual instrumentation is one of the major development resulted from the extensive use of computers, which offers the benefits of customizable software development of user-defined tools for control, process, and visualization of data, creating versatile systems, using modular programming, intuitive and easy to use. In this paper we present the development and implementation of virtual instrumentation software for medical application running on a mobile device. We choose to develop an application that measures the Pulse Wave Velocity, due to major incidence and impact of cardiovascular diseases.

The paper provides a case study on the wireless circuit for the purpose of the EGG (Electrogastrography) signal acquisition. The authors present an amplifier based on the ADS1298, wireless communication module (Bluetooth) and the microprocessor unit which have been recently built. The system is currently under examination but the outcome is very promising because the amplifier input is fed with the pure signal, i.e. no high/low pass filter is applied, that is a novelty. The system presented in this paper could be helpful in diagnosis gastric disorders in noninvasive way. It could determine patients with unexplained nausea, vomiting and other dyspeptic symptoms. The unit is under clinical trials tests and preliminary evaluation indicates acceptance by medical staff. Additional advantages are the relatively low cost of manufacture and the possibility of application remotely (pervasive computing).

Differential Ant Stigmergy Algorithm (DASA) is a recent meta-heuristic method which represents an adaptation of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) to continuous optimization problems. Other adaptations of ACO to continuous optimization exist but DASA seems to be very efficient for the class of highdimension real-parameters optimization problems, becoming a competitor to more classical methods such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The PSO is a meta-heuristic which is also inspired from insects' life as ACO. Even both methods use a population of entities, the memory of PSO is larger as those of DASA. DASA uses just one current solution around which the population search and the difference that generated last improvement. PSO stores the previous best position and velocity of every particle. This paper attempts to examine if an elitist version of DASA has at least the same effectiveness (finding the true global solution) as PSO, but with significantly better efficiency (less function evaluation). The performance comparison of DASA and PSO is implemented using a set of six test functions well known for their difficulty.

In this paper is described the design and implementation of a wireless atrial fibrillation monitoring system, for realtime remote patient monitoring in a limited area, using wireless sensor networks (WSN). The proposed system consists of a lightweight and low power wireless ECG acquisition and processing device, connected to a central monitoring station through WSN. The device is able to detect the paroxysmal atrial fibrillation episodes and transmits alerts to the central monitoring station. The system can be used for long-time continuous monitoring of patients suspected to have atrial fibrillation, as part of a diagnostic procedure, or recovery from an acute or surgical event. In order to detect the atrial fibrillation episodes we used a simple method based on RR intervals, extracted from ECG signal. We evaluated the performance of the method on MIT-BIH Atrial Fibrilation Database from Physionet. The central monitoring station runs a patient monitor application that receives the real time heart rate and atrial fibrillation alerts from WSN. A user-friendly Graphical User Interface was developed for the patient monitor application to display the heart rate and alerts coming from the monitored patient. A prototype of the system has been developed, implemented and tested.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) distributed systems have received considerable attention mainly due to their potential for high-performance and high-reliability. Job scheduling in P2P distributed systems is one of the most important issues. In this paper, we have evaluated the performance of four job scheduling algorithms named Random, Round Robin, Number of Connections and Server Load in P2P distributed computing environment. The aim of the performance evaluation is to provide a comprehensive view of what performance can be expected from these algorithms in P2P systems in terms of CPU utilization, task processing, traffic received and traffic sent at different load scenarios. We used OPNET modeler to build the simulation model for FTP application on the P2P distributed systems. The output of the performance comparison illustrates different QoS (Quality of Service) aspects of these basic algorithms under different workloads and traffic settings. The results show that the performance of each algorithm changes according to the operational environment setting. The simulation results show that the Server Load-based scheduling algorithm has the best performance among the four algorithms followed by the Number of Connections-based scheduling algorithm. Simulations also show that the Server Load scheduling policy is not suitable for heavy load situations and the Random algorithm is suitable for some settings, especially in the low load situation.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a wireless remote monitoring system for patients with temporary cardiac pacemakers. The system is built around a low power cardiac pacemaker with wireless data transmission capability, used for patient monitoring in to a limited area. The proposed system is designed to be used in emergency situations, in healthcare institutes, helping to keep the patient's heartbeat stable. The status of each heartbeat is wirelessly transmitted to a monitoring station via a wireless sensor network. The monitoring station runs a patient monitor application that receives the data from wireless sensor network and activates the alarms when these values exceed the preset limits. An experimental wireless pacemaker was implemented and tested.
