The extraction and representation of information from volume data are important research avenues in computer-based visualization. The interpretation of three- or multi-dimensional data from various scanning devices is important to medical imaging, diagnosis and treatment, reliability and sustainability analyses in various industrial branches, and, in more general terms, information visualization. In this paper, we present several approaches for the classification and representation of relevant information from volume data sets. The techniques are based on the gradient vector, a property directly derived from the original volume data. We show how this property can be computed and subsequently used for classification through gradient-based one- and multi-dimensional transfer functions, as well as for the enhancement of surface features. The described techniques are illustrated through images generated using our volume rendering framework, from Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data sets. The resulting images show how gradient-based techniques are suited for improved volume classification and the better extraction of meaningful information. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

In this paper a visual self-localization method for a humanoid robot is presented. This one is based on monocular information. The goal of this method is to obtain the position (x;y) and orientation θ of the humanoid robot inside the field of play. The methods proposed include some digital image processing algorithms and geometric interpretation to perform a 3D monocular reconstruction, that allows to measure the relative position between the robot and some known objects (goals and beacons), and to use them to obtain the robot's absolute position, by means of a triangulation method. Finally, the results obtained in Webots and in the real platform are presented. © 2011 IEEE.

Based on literature review and measurements performed on electric power stations which considered adjusted acoustic pressure level, generated during operation of high power transformer units with integrated on load tap changers, it can be stated that the main factors having influence on noise emission to surroundings are columns of fan coolers (cooling apparatus). The subject area presented in the paper considers measurements and value estimation of the adjusted acoustic pressure level occurring around cooler columns with two or three funs. The technical verification and comparative analysis were performed during factory tests. Paper includes determined values of noise generated during operation of fan coolers according to the rotational speed of the fan systems, distance from the (cooler) source by nominal rotational speed value and by height variation of the measuring position on the vertical symmetry axis of the investigated device. The main aim of works performed was estimation of the influence of the rotational speed of fans applied on the emitted to surroundings adjusted acoustic pressure level as well as comparative analysis of noise released to environment according to number of funs (a column with two and three funs). The subject area regards realization of scientific research works considering technical condition estimation of electric power transformer cores based on vibroacoustic measurements performed during their normal operation. Analyses of mechanical vibrations parameters determined in the frequency domain are presented in the paper. Measurements were carried out within laboratory experiments on a real transformer unit with an on load tab changer. The aim of investigational experiment performed was to determine the measuring transducer mount position on the tank of an under real conditions diagnosed transformer unit in which the vibroacoustic signals are characterized by highest amplitudes of the vibration indicators determined. Registration of measured vibroacoustic signals of the oil electric power middle voltage transformer under study was performed during idle running conditions, supplied with rating voltage and concurrently with magnetic circuit damage modeled - loosing of particular core plates. The measurements and analysis of vibroacoustic indicators determined were performed by use of specialist measuring apparatus from Brüel & Kjær - Pulse Dyn-XI system and Pulse LabShop programming environment. In this paper, the authors do a comparative study of two methods to eliminate the static hazards from logical functions. The first method consists in determining the coupled terms and getting the term that masks the static hazards, and the second method consists in determining the masking additional term by solving a system of Boolean equations. From the presented examples, the authors deduced that the 2nd method (solving a Boolean equations system) is more advantageous because it eliminates the heuristic nature of the first method (the determination of coupled terms) and, by solving the equations system it determines all prime implicants that needs to be added to the function's expression. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

Evolutionary algorithms have become popular in the recent years as a general, simple, and robust technique that can be used when other optimization methods cannot be applied. Presently, there are a number of evolutionary/genetic algorithm libraries publicly available;however, they are not specifically designed for multiagent systems. The framework described in this paper addresses this problem and presents a general architecture for evolutionary optimization aimed to be used by agents in a multiagent system implemented in the JADE framework inspired from the island model of parallel genetic algorithms. The characteristics of evolutionary algorithms that are more appropriate for use in a distributed, cooperative multiagent environment are also identified. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

The low radiation conditions and the predominantly phase-object image formation of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) result in extremely high noise levels and low contrast in the recorded micrographs. The process of single particle or tomographic 3D reconstruction does not completely eliminate this noise and is even capable of introducing new sources of noise during alignment or when correcting for instrument parameters. The recently developed Digital Paths Supervised Variance (DPSV) denoising filter uses local variance information to control regional noise in a robust and adaptive manner. The performance of the DPSV filter was evaluated in this review qualitatively and quantitatively using simulated and experimental data from cryo-EM and tomography in two and three dimensions. We also assessed the benefit of filtering experimental reconstructions for visualization purposes and for enhancing the accuracy of feature detection. The DPSV filter eliminates high-frequency noise artifacts (density gaps), which would normally preclude the accurate segmentation of tomography reconstructions or the detection of alpha-helices in single-particle reconstructions. This collaborative software development project was carried out entirely by virtual interactions among the authors using publicly available development and file sharing tools. © 2012 International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB) and Springer.

In this paper an anti-slip predictive controller is designed and implemented in order to control the rear wheels of a V-PRA (Variable Powered Rear Axle) vehicle. The control algorithm is EPSAC, a Model based Predictive control (MPC) strategy. It uses explicitly a model of the system for the prediction of the future system output, in order to calculate the optimal control input which will bring the system to a required setpoint. The main goals of this predictive controller were setpoint trajectory following, disturbance rejection and maintain overall the stability of the V-PRA vehicle. Although the process is nonlinear, being influenced by several parameters, linear discrete-time ARX models could be obtained based on system linearization around an operating point. An initial SISO controller was developed and tested, based on a Simulink model of the process. The control performances were tested successfully in presence of all kind of disturbances, denoting a robust controller. © 2011 IFAC.

In order to improve the lifetime and performance of a hybrid electric vehicle, one of the most challenging tasks is to improve the performance of the electrical energy storage, regarding the electrical power and energy capacity. By introducing a supercapacitor as auxiliary source to increase the system power and to take over the battery stresses, the performance of the combined energy storage unit is improved. This paper introduces a completed model of energy storage system, including a pack of batteries, a pack of supercapacitors and a control strategy. The aim is to discharge the capacitors when the required power from energy storage is above a threshold meaning that the driver needs a boost of power for a period of time. Because of their high density of power supercapacitors have more efficiency in delivering it for short time. This has a positive impact on the fuel consumption and the state of charge at the end of the drive cycle. © 2011 faculty of Auto control.

In this paper, the hardware component of a new technology used to communicate with people with major neuro-locomotor disability using ocular electromyogram is presented. The signals produced by the ocular muscle, provided by five electromyogram sensors are amplified used a new instrumentation amplifier and then processed by the software component of the proposed communication technology. The information obtained after these signals are processed is used in order to move a pointer on a display in concordance to the patient gaze direction. In this way, the needs of the patient are sent to the caretaker by detection of voluntary blinking. © 2011 IEEE.
