This paper addresses the development of an automatic segmentation technique for detecting cell nuclei. The technique uses a new approach for segmenting nuclei in images taken from tissues with colon carcinoma. The segmentation problems encountered in these images and solved by the proposed technique are related to the non-uniform illumination on the background, out-of-focus nuclei, the physical structure of cells in the tissue section, the activity status of the cell and the clustered cell nuclei. First, the region growing method is used for accurate background detection. The separation regions between grouped cell nuclei are detected using the cross-correlation method and validated based on their link with the background. Then, the nuclei boundaries are identified by applying the watershed algorithm on the complemented distance transform of the binary image containing the selected separation lines.

By continuing to use fossil fuels we are bound to pollute the atmosphere, and consequently, unwanted greenhouse and climate change effects will come to dominate every part of the earth. Wind power energy represents an interesting alternative to traditional forms of obtaining energy. However, the efficiency of wind power strongly depends on the control methods that play a significant role in eliminating the perturbing factors, decreasing the structural loads and increasing the amount and quality of the energy that is produced. A design of a model based control algorithm for a horizontal wind turbine is proposed. In a model-based control approach, increased model accuracy implies reduced uncertainty. The paper will include an analysis of the advantages that may arise from using such a control technique and also will focus on the robustness of the closed loop system.

An important issue in the analysis of two-dimensional electrophoresis images is the detection and quantification of protein spots. The main challenges in the segmentation of 2DGE images are to separate overlapping protein spots correctly and to find the abundance of weak protein spots. To enable comparison of protein patterns between different samples, it is necessary to match the patterns so that homologous spots are identified. In this paper we describe a new robust technique to segment and model the different spots present in the gels. The watershed segmentation algorithm is modified to handle the problem of over segmentation by initially partitioning the image to mosaic regions using the composition of fuzzy relations. The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm to overcome the over segmentation problem associated with the available algorithms.

The IEC61499 is an open standard for distributed control and automation. The interface between control software and hardware or communications is achieved by means of the so-called Service Interface Function Blocks (SIFB). This paper presents the guidelines to build communication SIFBs based on the emerging OMG DDS (Data Distribution Service) middleware. This specification implements in a very efficient way the Publisher/Subscriber paradigm providing significant QoS configuration possibilities. These characteristics make DDS suitable for implementing the communications among time-critical devices. By using these DDS-SIFBs within IEC61499 code generation tools, the designers of the distributed applications will be allowed to use this powerful technology in the new distributed applications.

It is proposed to have a first stage of assisted design of nominal systems with simulation based verification of the achieved performances. The control algorithm will then be improved by robustification to reproduce as good as possible the performances obtained in simulation on the real time process.
