Enterprise control applications are becoming more and more complex, exploiting distributed object technology in multi-tier architectures. For educational purposes, the development of a manufacturing control laboratory that may emphasize the new control techniques and the overall integration of the system activities is a complex and challenging task. In the paper, an enterprise application solution that integrates the ERP concept in three-tier architecture with a Flexible Manufacturing System is presented. It contains modularized, distributed subsystems in configurable and maintainable software. Starting from the customer order, to planned order dispatch, the ERP main components and the information flow within the system is presented. The software architecture contains the ERP components that are implemented using Enterprise Java Beans, deployed in a J2EE application server. It enables transactions with the business environment, shop-floor system and the database. The application is conceptually designed and analyzed using a visual model developed in Unified Modelling Language.

Efficient allocation of distributed object-oriented tasks to a pre-defined scheduled system

key phase in the design process of software for distributed systems is the allocation of the software components to the available hardware. A problem arises when a software/hardware mismatch occurs. This paper presents a solution to that problem by introducing a technique that guarantees efficient allocation of predefined scheduled object-oriented software components to the available hardware based on genetic algorithm. The allocation is to be made dynamically in a system with a predefined schedule. We thus modified the parameters of the genetic search technique to allow converging to the best solution in a relatively short time to be suitable for the dynamicity of the allocation. The performance of the allocation technique is evaluated in terms of the time cost (CPU clock pulses for more generality) required for the GA search to converge to the optimal allocation structure of the software components. The results obtained by the proposed technique are compared against the results from the branch-and-bound search technique. The experimental results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed technique in reaching the optimal allocation in considerable time, showing that it requires much less time than branch-and-bound.

Natural hazards, and especially earthquakes, are often recurring phenomena. Therefore, there is a permanent need for solutions to reduce earthquake losses by developing technologies, procedures, knowledge, and tools for seismic design and rehabilitation of buildings and infrastructure. A key point to an effective decision making process that aims at mitigating their effects is building a model of the underlying facts. A Geographical Information System (GIS) is a framework able to assemble, keep, process and display specific information, identified by geographical location, which can combine layers of information to give the user a better understanding about that location. By using a Geographical Information System containing geospatial data, one can develop useful scenarios to reduce natural disaster risk and vulnerability of structures. In this paper, we describe a way of applying data mining techniques from the artificial intelligence field to earthquake analysis in order to make a better investigation of the available data. These methods are capable of finding "hidden" correlations among different subsets of data, which cannot be revealed by means of simple statistics.

This paper deals with the parity based fault estimation for nonlinear systems modelled by Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models. In this paper, the parity space approach for linear systems is generalized to TS fuzzy systems, and power spectra of the faults are incorporated into the design procedure. The design procedure is given in terms of a family of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design techniques

This paper deals with the problem of robust fault estimation for uncertain time delay Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models. The aim of this study is to design a delay dependent fault estimator ensuring a prescribed H infin performance level for the fault estimation error, irrespective of the uncertainties and the time delays. Sufficient conditions for the existence of a robust fault estimator are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Membership functions'(MFs) characteristics are incorporated into the fault estimator design to reduce the conservativeness of neglecting these characteristics

In this paper, the results from a joint industry-academia project in industrial robotic force control are presented. The extension and implementation of an external sensor system for an industrial robot system, which can be used for high-bandwidth force control, are described. Results from two industrial applications using the system are presented, a stub grinding application using a new compliant grinding end-effector integrated with the robot control system, and a deburring application with a stiff tool requiring high-bandwidth force control in six degrees of freedom. Using the system an easily reconfigurable control structure was achieved, which was able to control contact forces with a sampling bandwidth of an order of magnitude higher than for conventional robot controllers
