Longer training times pose a significant challenge in artificial neural networks (ANNs) as it may leads to increasing the computational costs and decreasing the effectiveness of the model. Therefore, it is imperative to reduce training times in ANNs to enhance the computational efficiency. The initialization of the weights between the layers in ANN plays a vital role in reducing training times. Appropriate weight initialization can help the network converge faster during the training by providing an optimum starting point for the network. Therefore, weight initialization techniques are essential for efficient training of ANNs. This paper revisits and implements different popular weight initialization techniques in ANNs and analyzes their impact on training time. Specifically, this paper implements Gaussian-based, Kaming-based, and Xavier-based weight initiation atop a popular DNN-based network. The experiments are conducted by employing a well-known dataset. The results show that the scenario when no weight initiation is applied consumed the highest training time, whereas different weight initiation techniques contribute in reducing the training times for the network. © 2024 The Authors.

This article explores the creation of a library of plans, including the possibilities offered by the use of available specialized means and equipment in rescue operations. As a hazardous environment, a 3D model of an electrical substation is considered, and intelligent agent behavior is modeled with application in a serious game. The proposed modification of the Reinforcement Q-learning algorithm includes the introduction of matrices for the intensity of the characteristics of the considered disaster;safety thresholds;and new rules for choosing the next possible position in the evacuation path. © 2023 IEEE.

The paper presents research dedicated to observations of relations between attribute properties and discretisation. In the investigations described, the gradually increasing sets of features were discretised by selected approaches, and several variants of data were constructed. The continuous, partially discrete, and completely translated datasets were explored by the chosen classifiers and their performance studied in the context of a number of discretised attributes, discretisation procedures, and the way of processing of features and datasets. The stylometric problem of authorship attribution was the machine learning task under study. The experimental results enable to observe closer the specificity of style-markers employed as characteristic features, and indicate conditions for efficient recognition of authorship. They can be extended to other application domains with similar characteristics. © 2024 The Authors.

In the context of data imbalance probably the most investigated problem is imbalance of classes, as learning from the data with this characteristic makes detection of existing patterns for all classes more difficult. However, other problems related to imbalance also exists and the paper addresses such cases where classes are balanced, but there is in-class imbalance. Such imbalance can be caused by uneven representation of sub-concepts. When there is a noticeable difference between the numbers of samples belonging to sub-concepts, this can turn the under-represented sub-concepts into disjuncts. Data irregularities of this type can hinder recognition, therefore actions are typically taken to restore balance. In the investigations described, the issue was studied in the stylometric domain and various classifiers were applied to the data that was balanced, then imbalanced, and finally with restored balance. The experiments show that the specifics of the domain of application can put its own mark on the data which is difficult to overcome by standard processing such as under- or oversampling. Observed dependence on a learner and dataset makes the issue even more complex and layered, and shows the need for deeper studies. © 2024 The Authors.

Machine Learning-Based Calibration Approaches for Single-Beam and Multiple-Beam Distance Sensors

Sensors are the foundation to facilitate smart cities, smart grids, and smart transportation, and distance sensors are especially important for sensing the environment and gathering information. Researchers have developed various methods to calibrate distance sensors;however, they mainly focus on using external information for calibration, which is inefficient and computationally expensive. To alleviate the above problems, we propose machine learning (ML)-based calibration approaches for distance sensors. We develop two calibration mechanisms, where the naive mechanism directly predicts the true distance, while the residual mechanism predicts the residual for calibration. The conventional ML regression algorithms are then adopted to predict the true distance or calibration residual. Experimental results show that the designed residual calibration mechanism outperforms the naive mechanism by reducing the root mean square error (RMSE) by 92.2% and mean absolute error (MAE) by 93.3% in the fitting task. In prediction, the proposed 2-D-residual mechanism achieves an improvement of 78.6% and 65.7% compared to the state-of-the-art method. The experimental results show the effectiveness and generalization of the proposed ML-based calibration method, especially for the 2-D mechanism, which achieves the highest robustness in all fitting and prediction tasks. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

In the modern digital world, the use of animated applications has increased significantly and such applications have quietly become an integral part of life. Capturing human motions is a fundamental aspect of these applications which is performed by motion-capturing (MoCap) systems. Due to the heterogeneity of MoCap systems and marker configurations, the captured skeletons may vary in their structure, number of joints, and bone lengths. The need for motion retargeting arises to transfer motion captured from one articulated actor to another. Although motion retargeting is a long-standing issue, current methods cannot automatically execute retargeting between skeletons. This paper presents the retraining of a popular motion retargeting network with a new large-scale motion dataset. The retraining aims to demonstrate the capabilities of the motion retargeting network to handle the problem of motion retargeting between skeletons that may have different structures. The paper first, presents the motion retargeting network that employs an encoder-decoder architecture. Afterward, we re-train the motion retargeting network with a new MoCap dataset. To validate the effectiveness of the network, we visually compare the generated results with the existing retargeting model. The results show that the motion retargeting network effectively retargets the different motions. © 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Skin segmentation participates significantly in various biomedical applications,such as skin cancer identification and skin lesion *** paper presents a novel framework for segmenting the *** framework contains two main stages:The first stage is for removing different types of noises from the dermoscopic images,such as hair,speckle,and impulse noise,and the second stage is for segmentation of the dermoscopic images using an attention residual U-shaped Network(U-Net).The framework uses variational Autoencoders(VAEs)for removing the hair noises,the Generative Adversarial Denoising Network(DGAN-Net),the Denoising U-shaped U-Net(D-U-NET),and Batch Renormalization U-Net(Br-U-NET)for remov-ing the speckle noise,and the Laplacian Vector Median Filter(MLVMF)for removing the impulse *** the second main stage,the residual attention u-net was used for *** framework achieves(35.11,31.26,27.01,and 26.16),(36.34,33.23,31.32,and 28.65),and(36.33,32.21,28.54,and 27.11)for removing hair,speckle,and impulse noise,respectively,based on Peak Signal Noise Ratio(PSNR)at the level of(0.1,0.25,0.5,and 0.75)of *** framework also achieves an accuracy of nearly 94.26 in the dice score in the process of segmentation before removing noise and 95.22 after removing different types of *** experiments have shown the efficiency of the used model in removing noise according to the structural similarity index measure(SSIM)and PSNR and in the segmentation process as well.

The paper describes the energy consumption from the battery based on the current measurements for various cases, i.e., speed (PWL adjustment) and loads. The main purpose of the research is to have additional and reliable information about power consumption and battery life estimation for autonomous guided vehicles (AGV). The authors propose a two-step algorithm. In the first step, a linear classifier was proposed. Then, the KNN classifier was tested;however, it did not give satisfactory results, so it was finally decided to use the random forest to estimate the load and PWL. The time domain current measurement is evaluated, and the beforementioned algorithms process the selected statistical measures. It has been proven that a two-step algorithm allows for achieving high accuracy. Based on the current observation, the paper is a good starting point for further investigation of the AGV because it is usually implemented in the AGV - so it does not require additional hardware. Moreover, it can lead to better energy management and increase battery lifetime. © 2023 IEEE.
