Facial expression recognition plays a pivotal role in comprehending emotions and social interactions, particularly in individuals grappling with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who often encounter challenges in non-verbal communication. For some with ASD, even subtle shifts in their facial expressions can prove elusive, rendering it arduous to categorize their emotional states accurately. Consequently, the analysis and processing of facial expression data hold the potential to facilitate early autism diagnosis, thereby enabling timely therapeutic interventions and alleviating the economic and psychological burdens experienced by patients. In this study, we introduce an enhanced approach that leverages a fuzzy convolutional neural network (CNN) and an Improved Binary Genetic Algorithm (IBGA) for autism diagnosis based on facial expression data. Our model confronts the intricate task of recognizing facial images by selecting salient features employing the IBGA method. Moreover, it employs fuzzy weights to ascertain the probability of similarity within the classifier layer. Our proposed model has yielded impressive outcomes, boasting an average accuracy of 0.9405 for ASD detection and 0.9365 for the recognition of six distinct facial expressions. These results hold profound implications for the enhancement of emotion recognition systems and the refinement of interventions aimed at bolstering social interactions for individuals grappling with ASD. © 2024, The Authors. Data poisoning attacks, where adversaries manipulate training data to degrade model performance, are an emerging threat as machine learning becomes widely deployed in sensitive applications. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of data poisoning including attack techniques, adversary incentives, impacts on security and reliability, detection methods, defenses, and key research gaps. We examine label flipping, instance injection, backdoors, and other attack categories that enable malicious outcomes ranging from IP theft to accidents in autonomous systems. Promising detection approaches include statistical tests, robust learning, and forensics. However, significant challenges remain in translating academic defenses like adversarial training and sanitization into practical tools ready for operational use. With safety and trustworthiness at stake, more research on benchmarking evaluations, adaptive attacks, fundamental tradeoffs, and real-world deployment of defenses is urgently needed. Understanding vulnerabilities and developing resilient machine learning pipelines will only grow in importance as data integrity is fundamental to developing safe artificial intelligence.

Swarm-based techniques, a form of meta-heuristic techniques, are derived from the swarm system's social conduct in nature. A newly brought optimization algorithm is Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) that is stimulated through looking conduct of Harris Hawks (agents) of finding food (optimal solution). Balancing between exploitative and exploratory processes of the original HHO algorithm is desirable for achieving better performance to many optimization problems. An algorithm, Chaotic Harris Hawks Optimization (CHHO), is proposed in this work for the unconstrained function optimization. The CHHO algorithm is presented based on adjusting the exploration mechanism of the original HHO algorithm. Ten chaotic maps are used to control this mechanism instead of random adjusting. The unimodal, multimodal, and multimodal based fixed-dimension benchmark functions are used to compare the CHHO algorithm with the HHO algorithm. Visibility of the CHHO algorithm for optimizing the unconstrained benchmark function, with the intelligible effect of the Gauss and Logistic chaotic maps over other maps, is shown in the experiments. © 2020 IEEE.

The utilization of solar energy in grid-connected photovoltaic installations has become increasingly significant. This article introduces a photovoltaic system seamlessly integrated with a three-phase network. The system employing a five-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) voltage source inverter is designed for a single-step connection to enhance power quality in the distribution network. The control technique employed for the efficient functioning of the photovoltaic system is based on the notion of instantaneous reactive power. Notably, this strategy is straightforward, operates the system throughout the day, and eliminates the need for Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) usage. The Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) Current controller sends switching signals to the NPC multilevel inverter, which does a great job of dynamic performance under steady-state and transient situations. The proportional-integral controller regulates the voltage of the Uninterruptible Power Supply DC bus capacitors. The proposed system undergoes comprehensive simulation validation under various irradiation levels.

When mining of input data is focused on rule induction, knowledge, discovered in exploration of existing patterns, is stored in combinations of certain conditions on attributes included in rule premises, leading to specific decisions. Through their properties, such as lengths, supports, cardinalities of rule sets, inferred rules characterise relations detected among variables. The paper presents research dedicated to analysis of these dependencies, considered in the context of various discretisation methods applied to the input data from stylometric domain. For induction of decision rules from data, Classical Rough Set Approach was employed. Next, based on rule properties, several factors were proposed and evaluated, reflecting characteristics of available condition attributes. They allowed to observe how variables and rule sets changed depending on applied discretisation algorithms.

Data scarcity has become one of the main obstacles to developing supervised models based on Artificial Intelligence in computer Vision. Indeed, Deep Learning-based models systematically struggle when applied in new scenarios never seen during training and may not be adequately tested in non-ordinary yet crucial real-world situations. This paper presents and publicly releases CrowdSim2, a new synthetic collection of images suitable for people and vehicle detection gathered from a simulator based on the Unity graphical engine. It consists of thousands of images gathered from various synthetic scenarios resembling the real world, where we varied some factors of interest, such as the weather conditions and the number of objects in the scenes. The labels are automatically collected and consist of bounding boxes that precisely localize objects belonging to the two object classes, leaving out humans from the annotation pipeline. We exploited this new benchmark as a testing ground for some state-of-the-art detectors, showing that our simulated scenarios can be a valuable tool for measuring their performances in a controlled environment. © 2023, CC BY.

Development of a Realistic Crowd Simulation Environment for Fine-grained Validation of People Tracking Methods

Generally, crowd datasets can be collected or generated from real or synthetic sources. Real data is generated by using infrastructure-based sensors (such as static cameras or other sensors). The use of simulation tools can significantly reduce the time required to generate scenario-specific crowd datasets, facilitate data-driven research, and next build functional machine learning models. The main goal of this work was to develop an extension of crowd simulation (named CrowdSim2) and prove its usability in the application of people-tracking algorithms. The simulator is developed using the very popular Unity 3D engine with particular emphasis on the aspects of realism in the environment, weather conditions, traffic, and the movement and models of individual agents. Finally, three methods of tracking were used to validate generated dataset: IOU-Tracker, Deep-Sort, and Deep-TAMA. © 2023, CC BY.

The paper presents research focused on decision reducts, a feature reduction mechanism inherent to rough sets theory. As a reduct enables to protect the discriminative properties of attributes with respect to described concepts, from the point of data representation, a reduct length is considered to be the most important measure of its quality. However, such approach is insufficient while taking into account the performance of a reduct-based rule classifier applied to test samples. When many reducts of the same length are available, they can lead to vastly different predictions. The paper provides a description for the proposed procedure for iterative reduct generation, which results in decrease of diversity in the observed levels of accuracy, supporting reduct selection. The procedure was applied for binary classification with balanced classes, for the stylometric task of authorship attribution. © 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

The paper is dedicated to the area of feature selection, in particular a notion of attribute rankings that allow to estimate importance of variables. In the research presented for ranking construction a new weighting factor was defined, based on relative reducts. A reduct constitutes an embedded mechanism of feature selection, specific to rough set theory. The proposed factor takes into account the number of reducts in which a given attribute exists, as well as lengths of reducts. Two approaches for reduct generation were employed and compared, with search executed by a genetic algorithm. To validate the usefulness of the reduct-based rankings in the process of feature reduction, for gradually decreasing subsets of attributes, selected through rankings, sets of decision rules were induced in classical rough set approach. The performance of all rule classifiers was evaluated, and experimental results showed that the proposed rankings led to at least the same, or even increased classification accuracy for reduced sets of features than in the case of operating on the entire set of condition attributes. The experiments were performed on datasets from stylometry domain, with treating authorship attribution as a classification task, and stylometric descriptors as characteristic features defining writing styles. © 2020 The Authors.
