A novel family of Cosine series Quantum Sampling (QCoSamp) operators appropriate for quantum computing is described. The development of quantum algorithms, analogous to classical algorithms, we apply to the harmonic analysis of signals. We show quantum sampling through measurements of a quantum system, and after operators of the family are applied, allow for input signal mapping with a Fourier series representation. Cloud service providers (CSP) provide on-demand cloud computing services, reduces the cost of setting-up and scaling-up IT infrastructure and services, and stimulates shorter establishment times for start-ups that offer or use cloud-based services. Task reneging or dropping sometimes occur when a task waits in the queue longer than its timeout or execution deadline, or it is compromised and must be dropped from the queue or as an active queue management strategy to avoid tail dropping of tasks when the queues are full. Reneged or dropped tasks could be resubmitted provided they were not dropped due to security reasons. In this paper, we present a simple M/M/c/N queueing model of a cloud computing physical machine, where the interarrival times and the services times are exponentially distributed, with N buffer size and c virtual machines running in parallel. We present numerical examples to illustrate the effect of task reneging and task resubmission on the queueing delay, probability of task rejection, and the probability of immediate service. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

In the paper we investigate an uncertain single machine total weighted tardiness problem where uncertainty of times of jobs execution and jobs deadlines are modeled by random variables with a normal distribution. We check the influence of applying elimination criteria to the robustness of the determined solutions. The paper presents research focused on decision reducts, a feature reduction mechanism inherent to rough sets theory. As a reduct enables to protect the discriminative properties of attributes with respect to described concepts, from the point of data representation, a reduct length is considered to be the most important measure of its quality. However, such approach is insufficient while taking into account the performance of a reduct-based rule classifier applied to test samples. When many reducts of the same length are available, they can lead to vastly different predictions. The paper provides a description for the proposed procedure for iterative reduct generation, which results in decrease of diversity in the observed levels of accuracy, supporting reduct selection. The procedure was applied for binary classification with balanced classes, for the stylometric task of authorship attribution.

The paper is dedicated to the area of feature selection, in particular a notion of attribute rankings that allow to estimate importance of variables. In the research presented for ranking construction a new weighting factor was defined, based on relative reducts. A reduct constitutes an embedded mechanism of feature selection, specific to rough set theory. The proposed factor takes into account the number of reducts in which a given attribute exists, as well as lengths of reducts. Two approaches for reduct generation were employed and compared, with search executed by a genetic algorithm. To validate the usefulness of the reduct-based rankings in the process of feature reduction, for gradually decreasing subsets of attributes, selected through rankings, sets of decision rules were induced in classical rough set approach. The performance of all rule classifiers was evaluated, and experimental results showed that the proposed rankings led to at least the same, or even increased classification accuracy for reduced sets of features than in the case of operating on the entire set of condition attributes. The experiments were performed on datasets from stylometry domain, with treating authorship attribution as a classification task, and stylometric descriptors as characteristic features defining writing styles.

Decision support system based on pattern detection in iterative dermoscopic screening

Background and Objective: Videodermoscopy is the gold standard in melanoma diagnosis. A new research trend aims to support specialists’ work by automating this examination method, but most research focuses on developing detectors to replace dermatologists. Our study aims to present a novel idea which focuses on supporting the examination process instead of completely automating it. Instead of detecting and classifying all naevi each time, our approach focuses on full screening at the first visit and shortening the examination at subsequent visits. During the following examinations, images of all naevi are taken by supporting staff and are compared with previously taken images using feature-matching or co-registration-based algorithms. An unmatched naevus needs to be checked by the specialist, meaning that a new naevus appeared or an old one had changed. Methods: The similarity between images (ranging from 0% to 100%) was obtained with characteristic points searching (ORB method) and co-registration-based methods. No dataset presenting changes of naevi over time exists, so augmenting the images from PH2 and HAM10000 datasets was required to simulate the time flow. Results: The decision bound was set, so the true positive rate of each method was equal to 99%, giving the specificity of ORB equal to 97% (PH2) and 89% (HAM10000). Similar tests were performed using a co-registration algorithm giving specificity equal to 23% (PH2) and 19% (HAM10000). Conclusions: We believe that employing our approach will allow supporting staff to perform screening without experts’ help, decreasing examination time and costs and increasing the accessibility of dermoscopic examinations.

Microbiological and biological analysis of polymer-oxide coatings formed on dental implants enriched with clindamycin

Coatings on dental implants are still being developed in order to obtain an ideal balance between their cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties. This paper presents the bacteriostatic and biological properties of oxide-polymer layers with clindamycin on titanium dental implants. A layer was formed on the surface of titanium implants, which was composed of poly(lactic- co -glycolic acid) (PLGA) and clindamycin. The surface morphology was analyzed using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Clindamycin loaded into the polymer was successfully found to inhibit S. aureus and slightly inhibit E. coli bacteria. The average inhibition zone obtained for S. aureus was 14 mm. Only single bacteria were found to be adhered to the implant surface, and changes in their morphology were observed (SEM analysis). The cytocompatibility of the implant extracts was evaluated via the Alamar Blue test and by using cytometry techniques. More than 95 % of L929 cells were found to be living after 24 h of their culture with extracts collected from the implants with hybrid coatings. Additionally, the stability of different concentrations of clindamycin in aqueous solutions at various temperatures was analyzed. It was found that the storage of clindamycin at 4 °C caused the lowest changes in concentration. The concentration of clindamycin influenced both the L929 cells’ viability and bacterial inhibition.

Structural Decomposition Approach to Design of No-Wait Cyclic Schedules for Repeatedly Operating Transport System Dedicated to Supply Loops

The paper presents a method allowing to construct no-wait cyclical schedules for repetitive transport systems (e.g. the milk-run) servicing cyclic material supply loops in the production system using selected means of transport (e.g. AGVs). The transport means are following established routes and given arrival times. The routes are composed of sectors linking workstations. Transport trolleys may share specific sectors of the route in mutual exclusion mode and must wait in a given sector to enter the next sector of the route when another trolley occupies it. The job-shop repetitive transportation system is a system of cyclic processes with a fixed structure that are executing sequences of operations (routes) using shared resources (sectors). The work aims to find a no-wait cyclic schedule that guarantees the required delivery dates or establish that such a schedule does not exist. It considers cyclic process systems for which each resource can be used by at most two operations, and the deadlock state cannot occur as a result of waiting processes on shared resources. For specified initial operations of cyclic processes and their start times (the initial system state), the problem of determining no-wait cyclical schedules decomposes into subproblems. Each subproblem consists of the verification of necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions for each of 2-process subsystems composed of one shared resource and two processes using this resource. The method aims of prototyping various variants of process starting times for which the conditions guaranteeing no-wait property of the system hold simultaneously for each of the 2-process subsystems. It allows designing cyclic schedules for complex systems composed of 2-process subsystems that are structurally deadlock-free. The class of cyclical processes considered in this article is broader than the class of cascade-like (chain-like, sequential) process systems analysed so far in the literature. In this

Energy is essential for human existence, and its high consumption is a growing concern in today's technology-driven society. Global initiatives aim to reduce energy consumption and pollution by developing and deploying energy-efficient sensing technologies for long-term monitoring, control, automation, security, and interactions. Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) benefit a lot from the continuous monitoring capabilities of these sensing devices, which include medical sensors worn on or implanted in the human body for healthcare monitoring. Despite significant advancements, achieving energy efficiency in WBANs remains a significant challenge. A deep understanding of the WBAN architecture is essential to identify the causes of its energy inefficiency and develop novel energy-efficient solutions. We investigate energy efficiency issues specific to WBANs. We discuss the transformative impact that artificial intelligence and Machine Learning (ML) can have on achieving the energy efficiency of WBANs. Additionally, we explore the potential of emerging technologies such as quantum computing, nano-technology, biocompatible energy harvesting, and Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) in enabling energy efficiency in WBANs. We focus on WBANs' architecture, hardware, and software components to identify key factors responsible for energy consumption in the WBAN environment. Based on our comprehensive review, we introduce an innovative, energy-efficient three-tier architecture for WBANs that employs ML and edge computing to overcome the limitations inherent in existing energy-efficient solutions. Finally, we summarize the lessons learned and highlight future research directions that will enable the development of energy-efficient solutions for WBANs.
