The crayfish optimization algorithm (COA) is a recent bionic optimization technique that mimics the summer sheltering, foraging, and competitive behaviors of crayfish. Although COA has outperformed some classical metaheuristic (MH) algorithms in preliminary studies, it still manifests the shortcomings of falling into local optimal stagnation, slow convergence speed, and exploration–exploitation imbalance in addressing intractable optimization problems. To alleviate these limitations, this study introduces a novel modified crayfish optimization algorithm with multiple search strategies, abbreviated as MCOA. First, specular reflection learning is implemented in the initial iterations to enrich population diversity and broaden the search scope. Then, the location update equation in the exploration procedure of COA is supplanted by the expanded exploration strategy adopted from Aquila optimizer (AO), endowing the proposed algorithm with a more efficient exploration power. Subsequently, the motion characteristics inherent to Lévy flight are embedded into local exploitation to aid the search agent in converging more efficiently toward the global optimum. Finally, a vertical crossover operator is meticulously designed to prevent trapping in local optima and to balance exploration and exploitation more robustly. The proposed MCOA is compared against twelve advanced optimization algorithms and nine similar improved variants on the IEEE CEC2005, CEC2019, and CEC2022 test sets. The experimental results demonstrate the reliable optimization capability of MCOA, which separately achieves the minimum Friedman average ranking values of 1.1304, 1.7000, and 1.3333 on the three test benchmarks. In most test cases, MCOA can outperform other comparison methods regarding solution accuracy, convergence speed, and stability. The practicality of MCOA has been further corroborated through its application to seven engineering design issues and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) path planning tasks

This paper presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art occupancy grid mapping approaches for highway and urban automotive applications. The primary objective is to identify most suitable algorithm candidates for series applications. The occupancy grid functional performance requirements for automotive are given. A new high level grid fusion architecture is introduced. The innovative element is a second stage filtering step allowing better performance in case of highly uncertain inputs. An application of the architectures to an example sensor suite is proposed.

In this paper we present a wearable biopotential measurement system with expanded data safety feature. The proposed solution combines dry electrodes as a biopotential interface and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) transmission which together with a pairing feature based on NFC aim to provide reliable yet safe data transfer. Electrodes were prepared as conductive pads made of composite with Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) filler. Such a material is convenient for integration with textiles and provides required electrical properties. The main module of the system's electronic part is based on nRF52832 microcontroller with embedded BLE radio supporting Near Field Communication (NFC). The main focus of this paper is the development and testing of safety mechanisms in a short distance communication that can be implemented in medical data transfer.

Comparing alternatives in pairs is a very well known technique of ranking creation. The answer to how reliable and trustworthy ranking is depends on the inconsistency of the data from which it was created. There are many indices used for determining the level of inconsistency among compared alternatives. Unfortunately, most of them assume that the set of comparisons is complete, i.e. every single alternative is compared to each other. This is not true and the ranking must sometimes be made based on incomplete data. In order to fill this gap, this work aims to adapt the selected twelve existing inconsistency indices for the purpose of analyzing incomplete data sets. The modified indices are subjected to Monte Carlo experiments. Those of them that achieved the best results in the experiments carried out are recommended for use in practice. Various methods and specialized software programs are available for processing two- dimensional gel electrophoresis （2-DGE） images. However, due to the anomalies present in these images, a reliable, automated, and highly reproducible system for 2-DGE image analysis has still not been achieved. The most common anomalies found in 2-DGE images include vertical and hor- izontal streaking, fuzzy spots, and background noise, which greatly complicate computational anal- ysis. In this paper, we review the preprocessing techniques applied to 2-DGE images for noise reduction, intensity normalization, and background correction. We also present a quantitative comparison of non-linear filtering techniques applied to synthetic gel images, through analyzing the performance of the filters under specific conditions. Synthetic proteins were modeled into a two-dimensional Gaussian distribution with adjustable parameters for changing the size, intensity, and degradation. Three types of noise were added to the images： Gaussian, Rayleigh, and exponen- tial, with signal-to-noise ratios （SNRs） ranging 8-20 decibels （dB）. We compared the performanceof wavelet, contourlet, total variation （TV）, and wavelet-total variation （WTTV） techniques using parameters SNR and spot efficiency. In terms of spot efficiency, contourlet and TV were more sen- sitive to noise than wavelet and WTTV. Wavelet worked the best for images with SNR ranging 10- 20 dB, whereas WTTV performed better with high noise levels. Wavelet also presented the best per- formance with any level of Gaussian noise and low levels （20-14 dB） of Rayleigh and exponential noise in terms of SNR. Finally, the performance of the non-linear filtering techniques was evaluated using a real 2-DGE image with previously identified proteins marked. Wavelet achieved the best detection rate for the real image.

Optimization algorithms belonging to the group of artificial intelligence algorithms are becoming far more commonly used in practical applications. This article presents examples of two methods for optimization of an electrical drive controller's parameters using several quality criteria and constrained maximum values of signals in the controlled object. The two methods presented are the genetic algorithm and the firefly algorithm. In addition, solutions to the problem were sought using a modified firefly method and the traditional firefly method with operating parameters optimized for this particular problem. An effect of the firefly algorithm parameters on the speed of the solution search was observed. © 2018 IEEE.

Extremal problems for parabolic systems with multiple time-varying lags are presented. An optimal boundary control problem for parabolic systems in which multiple time-varying lags appear in the state equations and in the boundary conditions simultaneously is solved. The time horizon is fixed. Making use of Dubovicki-Milutin scheme, necessary and sufficient conditions of optimality for the Neumann problem with the quadratic performance functionals and constrained control are derived.

Feature design and selection is one of the first steps towards successful fault detection and diagnosis. Data from different sources can contain complimentary information about a monitored system. Hence methods which fuse features from multiple sources can often detect and diagnose a greater number of fault modes with higher confidence. However, solutions that require data from multiple sensors as inputs can be susceptible to failure if one or more of those sensors cease to function. Optimally a solution will fuse data from a sufficient number of sensors so that the advantages of sensor fusion are realized, while the robustness of the system is retained. In this paper the authors investigate how the best subset of features might differ for fault detection and fault severity diagnosis in a multiphase flow facility case study. ReliefF, which is a K-nearest neighbors-based feature selection filter, is used to rank the features for different problems. The dataset used for the analysis contains data from various operating conditions and induced faults with various severities. It was found that the optimal subset of features varied for different monitoring problems. It was also shown that including features that are ranked as being uninformative into a fault classifier can also impact the robustness of the classifier to sensor failures.

Universal serial bus can be considered a cost-effective and high-throughput communication medium for sensor networks and multinode control or data acquisition systems, especially for prototyping purposes. In a prototype system, a PC or Mac computer with a general-purpose operating system is often selected as a host or root node for the USB bus and it acts as a central data collector, supervisory user interface, and network traffic scheduler. However, achieved communication performance is often unsatisfactory since USB stack drivers incorporated in Windows, Linux, or macOS operating systems are not optimised for such specific purposes. The paper shows how an appropriately selected and implemented user application communication schedule, making use of operating system drivers pipelining and multitasking capabilities, can substantially improve USB network throughput and reduce communication latency.
