All ECG processing algorithms start with heart beat detection, making the reliability of this step crucial for the quality of the whole interpretation. This paper presents a regression-based QRS detector that is robust to singular outliers and high frequency noise present in real signals. Our algorithm consists of three steps: best fitted segments are determined in sliding windows of two different lengths, then a function of running angle between segments is calculated, and finally based on all such functions a probability of heart beat occurrence is derived and evaluated. The algorithm does not use signal filtering, and the moving window length and step do not rely on the sampling interval. Consequently, it allows for missing data and works equally well for a wide range of sampling frequencies.

The use of supervising of position control in modern industrial automation and building automation systems is becoming more and more common. In addition to basic features and reliability of these systems, increasingly important in their functionalities are opportunities for inter-communication and exchange the process data with other subsystems, visualization of their work or archiving of this data. The interesting specifics of those particular systems are those executed as a unique solution for scientific purposes. This paper based on selected, completed projects, presents the demands of modern automation and control systems - hardware and software system solutions to achieve their desired functionality. It presents both: a way to integrate various systems at the hardware level, but also a way of software objects and communication protocols used for development of control of the whole system.

Simulation of Electrohydrodynamic Phenomenon using Computational Intelligence Methods

The electrohydrodynamic effect occurring during an underwater electrical explosion of a copper wire and method of its simulation using computational intelligence algorithms are presented in the paper. Principles of operation of the seismic wave EHD generator are explained. Differential equations describing a mathematical model of changes in a release circuit of the EHD generator are provided. The results of computations of differential equations, using Runge -Kutta algorithm, are provided. The simulation is based on current intensity and pressure data sets recorded during field experiments and data obtained by solving differential equations of the theoretical model. The relationships between electrical parameters of the electrohydrodynamic discharge circuit, material parameters of the exploded wire and result- ing pressure values of the shock wave are discussed. A regression model is created using computational intelligence algorithms for prediction of pressure values of a seismic wave resulting from the explosion of the wire. The results of the prediction of the pressure wave using neural networks are presented in the paper and verified by comparing the measured and calculated values of the pressure wave.

This article presents a new method of steganographic keys generation for secret key visual steganography, when there is a need of embedding many secret messages in one container. The main assumptions which such algorithm has to meet are such that there should be no conflicts in generated keys, in other words keys cannot indicate the same positions (determining the way of secret image distribution over container). Secret data should be scattered in carrier randomly. Recovering any secret should be fast (with known key) without necessity of extracting all other messages. The proposed method can find application in multi-secret steganography in which many messages are embedded in a single container, especially with techniques of substitution or cover lookup.

Designing a group of single-branch filters taking into account their mutual influence

Single-branch filters are still popular and are commonly used for power quality improvement purposes. Analysis of a single-branch filter is a relatively simple task. Although individual filters tuned to specific harmonics can be easily designed, after connecting them into a group it turns out that the capacitance and inductance mutually influence each other, distorting the resulting frequency characteristics. This article presents a matrix method for design a group of single-branch filters, so that the resultant frequency characteristic satisfies the design requirements including the requirements for location of the frequency characteristic maxima. Designer indicates the frequencies of the parallel resonances.

Nowadays, smart metering and energy management installations are becoming essential part of building automation systems (BASs). Field level integration in these kind of installations could provide new features in buildings energy monitoring and improve control quality in BASs. In this context an interoperability of BAS devices is very important. It could be achieved with standardized functional profiles and functional blocks. An Internet of Things (IoT) technology provides solutions to this integration and possibilities to transform these installations into building energy management systems (BEMSs). In this paper a control application of developed IoT energy meter is introduced. This application implements functions that should be provided by these kind of automation nodes - vital elements for integrated BEMSs. It is ready for integration within the BASs.

Modern, based on biomedical signals interfaces have become recently very complex, however the complexity does not always lead to increased functionality or usability. In particular, when it comes to handicapped users, the currently available solutions are far from satisfactory. In this paper an innovative approach for biomedical signals based interfaced with the implementation of an inexpensive gaming headset Emotiv EPOC was presented. The main goal was to design, and develop an intuitive and user-friendly interface based on implementation of various biomedical signals such as EEG or EMG. The project was primarily intended for handicapped users as a replacement for traditional interfaces such as keyboard or mouse, however its potential use was extended. The proposed system differs from the already existing interfaces mainly because of its versatility to work with various biomedical signals, thus enabling a single interface to be controlled with different devices. Initial investigation has proven that Emotiv EPOC headset could be applied as an inexpensive, easily available on the open market tool for Human-computer Interaction (HCI) systems for the gaming purpose.

Academic teaching of a new discipline, besides its contents and formal issues, requires participation of the university in development of a target job market. This was the case of biomedical engineering in Poland ten years ago. This paper presents examples of activities, taken up by our university in cooperation with prospective employers, and evaluated with a help of our first alumni. The evaluation survey shows that despite the immature job market, the number of graduates employed accordingly to their education systematically raises each year from 72,5% in 2011 to 93,8% in 2013. Another interesting result is the distribution of job searching period: 19.2% of graduates were already employed before the graduation, further 23.1% found their job in less than one month after the diploma examination and another 28.8% in less than three months. The paper also highlights the role the former graduates play in motivating teachers and students to efforts towards a better educational outcome.

In this paper a hardware-software system for vehicle detection and counting at intersections is presented. It has been implemented and evaluated on the heterogeneous Zynq platform. The vehicle detection is based on the concept of virtual detection lines (VDL). Differences in colour, horizontal edges and Census transform results between areas around the VDL for two consecutive frames are used to disclosure particular vehicles. This part of the system is designed in hardware description language and implemented in the reconfigurable resources of the Zynq platform. Information about the vehicle presence, along with the time-spatial image obtained at the VDL are transmitted and processed on the ARM core integrated in the Zynq device. This allows to perform further analysis and eliminate false or multiple detections. The solution has been evaluated on several video sequences recorded in various conditions: sunny day (the occurrence of deep shadows), cloudy day, rain and night-time. The system could be an important element of an intelligent transportation system (ITS) i.e. applied in a smart camera.
