A 150W series-parallel resonant converter dedicated for audio-video equipment is proposed. The converter utilizes an integrated magnetic component that allows for easier inductor design and improvement in size and efficiency. A performance analysis focusing converter losses is conducted followed by creation of a simulation model, that includes various sources of losses is presented. The simulation model includes a simplified method for calculating core losses based on the common core parameters and the value of the flux flowing through that core. Lastly the converter simulation model is verified with measurement from a physical model. The establishment of this kind of model will useful in the future for predicting performance when different control schemes are applied.

In this paper, we present a toolkit named FiVO/QStorMan for supporting data-intensive applications in distributed environments with storage-related Quality of Service provisioning. Main features of the toolkit are: explicit definition of non-functional requirements regarding storage resources, usage of semantic descriptions of the available storage infrastructure and active monitoring data concerning the infrastructure workload and users operations. In particular, we describe user interfaces of the toolkit along with descriptions of main parts of the toolkit. In addition, the paper describes results of the performed experimental evaluation of the toolkit which confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach for the storage-related QoS provisioning. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper is focused on monitoring automation of distributed systems. In the presented research, AI-based approaches to distributed monitoring related to large distributed systems such as grids, were explored. In both presented concepts knowledge is used to make decisions regarding management actions, using rules and fuzzy logic. The first concept is an agent-less rule-based solution, implemented in a high-level monitoring system called Saude-Net. It allows to define actions for monitored resources, using a kind of expert system. The second solution, which exploits agents and fuzzy logic, is realized in a system called SAMM Compliant Agent. Both presented systems are capable of reacting to observed failures and of modifying their knowledge to better fit possible problems with resources. We also present a short comparison of the two concepts, and an analysis of their usage. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Many existing problem solving environments provide scientists with convenient methods for building scientific applications over distributed computational and storage resources. In many cases a basic set of features of such environments is sufficient to conduct a complete experiment flow. However, complex cases often require extensions supporting an external piece of software or a communication standard not integrated beforehand. Most environments deal with such cases by providing an extension facility and letting third parties add required features. The GridSpace environment also includes several mechanisms for extending its own functionality and here we describe how this can be accomplished. We focus on extensions already implemented such as local job submission and scripting language repositories, as well as on a GUI extension point which can be used to add custom graphical user interfaces to GridSpace experiments independently of their release process. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In the paper the first order sensitivity analysis is performed for a class of optimal control problems for time delay parabolic-hyperbolic equations. A singular perturbation of geometrical domain of integration is introduced in the form of a circular hole. The Steklov-Poincaré operator on a circle is defined in order to reduce the problem to regular perturbations in the truncated domain. The optimality system is differentiated with respect to the small parameter and the directional derivative of the optimal control is obtained as a solution to an auxiliary optimal control problem.

FPGA devices are a perfect platform for implementing image processing algorithms. In the article, an advanced video system is presented, which is able to detect moving objects in video sequences. The detection method is using two algorithms. First of all, a multimodal background generation method allows reliable scene modelling in case of rapid changes in lighting conditions and small background movement. Finally a segmentation based on three parameters lightness, colour and texture is applied. This approach allows to remove shadows from the processed image. Authors proposed some improvements and modifications to existing algorithms in order to make them suitable for reconfigurable platforms. In the final system only one, low cost, FPGA device is able to receive data from high speed digital camera, perform a Bayer transform, RGB to CIE Lab colour space conversion, generate a moving object mask and present results to the operator in real-time. © 2011 IEEE.

Agent paradigm is becoming more and more popular in design of complex multi-robot systems. Similarities between features attributed to robots and agents lead to defining an agent as a single robot control program or even calling a robot an "embodied agents". This approach can cause serious issues concerning scalability, extensibility and performance of large-scale multi-robot systems. In this paper a different approach to design and implementation of software systems managing mobile robots is presented. It is based on the logical separation of a hardware robot and a software agent. The paper focuses on improvements in system performance achieved by using the approach. Three exemplary applications are described and experimental results are provided.

The paper introduces generalized algorithms for the automatic generation of the address space structure for an UA server. First the generalized address space generation scheme for an OPC UA server is described. Afterwards we present the specialized algorithms for the generation of the type nodes, of object and variable nodes and for the method nodes. Finally the additional references are added to the fully meshed address space. Two basic ideas of the algorithms are: the splitting of the nodes into groups and the sequential addition of the groups to the address space, and the naming of a main reference for every target node. The algorithms have been applied for an aggregating UA server which models the devices of a flexible manufacturing system. The main advantages are: shorter development time, easier maintenance and the possibility to add nodes to the address space in both online and offline mode. © 2011 IEEE.

The aim of this research is to study size – dependent effects and gas sensing properties of TiO2 nanomaterials prepared on the base of nanopowders obtained by Flame Spray Synthesis, FSS. The specific surface area (SSA) and the resulting particle sizes of the prepared powders are controlled by the flow rate of the precursor. The results concerning morphological properties of nanomaterials investigated by BET, adsorption isotherms, X – ray Diffraction, XRD, Scanning Electron Microscopy, SEM are discussed. Electrical resistivity of gas sensing tablets is measured as a function of hydrogen concentration within the range of 50 – 3000 ppm at constant temperature of 200 o C – 400 o C. Dynamic changes in the electrical resistivity upon interaction with hydrogen are large and reproducible. The sensor response increases systematically with the decrease in the temperature of operation down to 250 o C. Smaller grain size results in a higher electrical conductivity suggesting the predominant influence of intergrain contacts.

In this paper we propose an agent architecture with learning capabilities and its application to a transportation problem. The agent consists of the several modules (control, execution, communication, task evaluation, planning and social) and knowledge bases to store information and learned knowledge. The proposed solution is tested on the PDPTW. Agents using supervised and reinforcement learning algorithms generate knowledge to evaluate arriving requests. Experimental results show that learning increases agent performance. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
