New simplified energy flow management algorithms for a DC bus-coupled photovoltaic-grid hybrid system

This paper presents a new simplified linear self-adjusting algorithm and an improved artificial ant colony self adjusting algorithm, for optimal energy flow management of a photovoltaic-grid hybrid energy system coupled through a DC link. The two proposed algorithms rely on the voltage error in the stabilization of the AC link to self determine a compensation current and hence power deficit, which is automatically extracted from the back-up storage to maintain an uninterrupted service and ensure the balance between power production and consumption. Numerical simulation results in Matlab/simulink under different scenarios show the effectiveness of the algorithms in mitigating the challenges posed by the intermittent nature of the photovoltaic source and also in facilitating the rapid and flexible integration of the renewable energy source. The algorithms also contribute effectively in regulating the AC bus voltage and in maintaining the frequency and total harmonic distortion within acceptable standards. The specificity of the two proposed algorithms is the fast response speed of the system in balancing power output and consumption. A comparative study of the proposed algorithms with a proportional integral (PI) controller under different operating modes clearly show the superiority of the new linear self-adjusting algorithm in terms of system stability, response time, error reduction and total harmonic distortion mitigation. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Humans continual learning (CL) ability is closely related to Stability Versus Plasticity Dilemma that describes how humans achieve ongoing learning capacity and preservation for learned information. The notion of CL has always been present in artificial intelligence (AI) since its births. This paper proposes a comprehensive review of CL. Different from previous reviews that mainly focus on the catastrophic forgetting phenomenon in CL, this paper surveys CL from a more macroscopic perspective based on the Stability Versus Plasticity mechanism. Analogous to biological counterpart, "smart" AI agents are supposed to i) remember previously learned information (information retrospection);ii) infer on new information continuously (information prospection:);iii) transfer useful information (information transfer), to achieve high-level CL. According to the taxonomy, evaluation metrics, algorithms, applications as well as some open issues are then introduced. Our main contributions concern i) rechecking CL from the level of artificial general intelligence;ii) providing a detailed and extensive overview on CL topics;iii) presenting some novel ideas on the potential development of CL. © 2021, CC BY.

Measurement-level fusion for OTHR network using message passing

Tracking an unknown number of targets based on multipath measurements provided by an over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) network with a statistical ionospheric model is complicated, which requires solving four subproblems: target detection, target tracking, multipath data association and ionospheric height identification. A joint solution is desired since the four subproblems are highly correlated, but suffering from the intractable inference problem of high-dimensional latent variables. In this paper, a unified message passing approach, combining belief propagation (BP) and mean-field (MF) approximation, is developed for simplifying the intractable inference. Based upon the factor graph corresponding to a factorization of the joint probability distribution function (PDF) of the latent variables and a choice for a separation of this factorization into BP region and MF region, the posterior PDFs of continuous latent variables including target kinematic state, target visibility state, and ionospheric height, are approximated by MF due to its simple MP update rules for conjugate-exponential models. With regard to discrete multipath data association which contains one-to-one frame (hard) constraints, its PDF is approximated by loopy BP. Finally, the approximated posterior PDFs are updated iteratively in a closed-loop manner, which is effective for dealing with the coupling issue among target detection, target tracking, multipath data association, and ionospheric height identification. Meanwhile, the proposed approach has the measurement-level fusion architecture due to the direct processing of the raw multipath measurements from an OTHR network, which is benefit to improving target tracking performance. Nowadays, the energy storage system (ESS) deployment is a promising solution for various perspectives of grid support. In particular, photovoltaic (PV) penetration is being increased rapidly in a present distribution network, causing voltage variation and violation issues. Hence, ESS has widely been utilized to mitigate voltage issues in distribution networks. This paper presents a study on the management of state of charge (SoC) of ESS for voltage regulation application in distribution networks. The voltage regulation strategy is proposed incorporating with SoC management. The SoC management strategy is applied to maintain the SoC of ESS within the desired value. In this paper, the SoC management issue has been investigated and analyzed by DIgSILENT Powerfactory software, according to the technical limitations of ESS. The simulation results show that the ESS requires appropriate SoC management to maintain simultaneously both aspects associated with the capability for voltage regulation and its energy availability.

The present work retrieves cubic–quartic optical soliton solutions to the complex Ginzburg–Landau equation that is considered with five forms of nonlinear refractive index. This work proposes dedicated hardware for an intelligent control system on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The intelligent system is represented as Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy-PI controller. The implementation uses a fully parallel strategy associated with a hybrid bit format scheme (fixed-point and other floating-point). Two hardware designs are proposed;the first one uses a single clock cycle processing architecture, and the other uses a pipeline scheme. The bit accuracy was tested by simulation with a non linear control system of robotic manipulator. The area, throughput, and dynamic power consumption of the implemented hardware are used to validate and compare the results of this proposal. The results achieved allow that the proposal hardware can use in several applications with high-throughput, low-power and ultra-low-latency restrictions such as teleportation of robot manipulators, tactile internet, industrial automation in industry 4.0, and others. OTHR multitarget tracking with a GMRF model of ionospheric parameters

The ionosphere is the propagation medium for radio waves transmitted by an over-The-horizon radar (OTHR). Ionospheric parameters, typically, virtual ionospheric heights (VIHs), are required to perform coordinate registration for OTHR multitarget tracking and localization. The inaccuracy of ionospheric parameters has a significant deleterious effect on the target localization of OTHR. Therefore, to improve the localization accuracy of OTHR, it is important to develop accurate models and estimation methods of ionospheric parameters and the corresponding target tracking algorithms. In this paper, we consider the variation of the ionosphere with location and the spatial correlation of the ionosphere in OTHR target tracking. We use a Gaussian Markov random field (GMRF) to model the VIHs, providing a more accurate representation of the VIHs for OTHR target tracking. Based on expectation-conditional maximization and GMRF modeling of the VIHs, we propose a novel joint optimization solution, called ECM-GMRF, to perform target state estimation, multipath data association and VIHs estimation simultaneously. In ECM-GMRF, the measurements from both ionosondes and OTHR are exploited to estimate the VIHs, leading to a better estimation of the VIHs which improves the accuracy of data association and target state estimation, and vice versa. Global deterioration of surface water quality was attributed to a pair of factors: human activities and natural processes, including hydrological variability, climate change, weather characteristics, and adjacent land use. The study of water quality in the contemporary era is a current issue. This paper presents an analysis of the variability of water quality parameters in a study developed on 4 years. In a number of 5 monitoring points, 18 water status parameters were monitored. Primary statistic methods were used and preliminary results are presented in this article, in order to assess the economic impact on medium and long term. This work highlights two major aspects: the first one is due to the fact that the site of research is the meeting point of the borders of three countries: Moldova, Ukraine and Romania. The second significant issue is caused by the fact that the study was conducted in the predeltaic area of the Danube Delta. This study was carried out over 4 years, and highlights the auto-filtering capacity of the Danube (River). © SGEM2018.

This paper presents the actual method used in upgrading an electric propulsion UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) (commonly known as drones) device with 2.45 m wingspan and weighing 8 kg. The device, endowed with a ROXXY Brushless Outrunner D63-72 230kV engine and a 14-inch propeller, has been successfully tested in various test flights. The paper explicitly presents the electric and electronic layouts, as well as the solutions identified for increasing its range by including a telemetry system based on the national GSM network.
