Light urban electric vehicles are an important target, both for the researchers and manufacturers. Concerning the motor's choice, more ways are investigated, but the most important is that as compact as possible solutions have to be used. In the top of the preferences, the permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) and brushless DC motors (BLDC) are situated. These are preferred thanks to their high power density, high efficiency and low maintenance cost. Even the main manufacturing technology and associated power electronics are quite similar, they essentially differ in the controlling technology, simpler and more advantageous being the BLDC. As integration technology, the in-wheel motor technology seems to be the one which improves the safety, efficiency, weight, controllability and finally the costs. Even the control principle is very well defined, the practical implementation can be different. The paper deals with four different control strategies for the BLDC motors. As a non-invasive angle closure glaucoma diagnosis procedure, Van Herick's slit-lamp Limbal Anterior Chamber Depth Estimation (LACDE) technique is preferably the current standard screening method preliminarily performed at hospitals and eye clinics. However, accuracy of depth estimation is very much dependent on the slit projection distance from the limbus (LD). This study investigated the relation and designed a parametric model to reduce the inconsistencies between results and improving the Van Herick's method accuracy. Additionally, two different types of classifiers such as Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Decision Tree with addition of LD as a predictor were trained and tested for comparison with parametric model. In the end acquired results clearly showed the effectiveness of LD consideration in LACDE, which lead to improvement in the experimental results.

The use of supervising of position control in modern industrial automation and building automation systems is becoming more and more common. In addition to basic features and reliability of these systems, increasingly important in their functionalities are opportunities for inter-communication and exchange the process data with other subsystems, visualization of their work or archiving of this data. The interesting specifics of those particular systems are those executed as a unique solution for scientific purposes. This paper based on selected, completed projects, presents the demands of modern automation and control systems - hardware and software system solutions to achieve their desired functionality. It presents both: a way to integrate various systems at the hardware level, but also a way of software objects and communication protocols used for development of control of the whole system.

Changing the surface properties on naval steel as result of non-thermal plasma treatment

The problem of corrosion, related to Biofouling formation, is an issue with very high importance in the maritime domain. According to new rules, the paints and all the technologies for the conditioning of naval materials must fulfil more restrictive environmental conditions. In order to solve this issue, different new clean technologies have been proposed. Among them, the use of non-thermal plasmas produced at atmospheric pressure plays a very important role. This study concerns the opportunity of plasma treatment for preparation or conditioning of naval steel OL36 type. The plasma reactors chosen for the experiments can operate at atmospheric pressure and are easy to use in industrial conditions. They are based on electrical discharges GlidArc and Spark, which already proved their efficiency for the surface activation or even for coatings of the surface. The non-thermal character of the plasma is ensured by a gas flow blown through the electrical discharges. One power supply has been used for reactors that provide a 5 kV voltage and a maximum current of 100 mA. The modifications of the surface properties and composition have been studied by XPS technique (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy). There were taken into consideration 5 samples: 4 of them undergoing a Mini-torch plasma, a Gliding Spark, a GlidArc with dry air and a GlidArc with CO2, respectively the fifth sample which is the untreated witness. Before the plasma treatment, samples of naval steel were processed in order to obtain mechanical gloss. The time of treatment was chosen to 12 minutes. In the spectroscopic analysis, done on a ULVAC-PHI, Inc. PHI 5000 Versa Probe scanning XPS microprobe, a monocromated Al Kα X-ray source with a spot size of 100 μm2 was used to scan each sample while the photoelectrons were collected at a 45-degree take-off angle. The paper deals with a technique which uses the predictive concepts in order to obtain the pulse width modulation strategy of a voltage fed inverter. After the technique is briefly described, it is applied for the case when the inverter supplies an induction motor, the reference values of the currents being obtained from a classical vector control scheme. The described technique is then simulated and the waveforms are compared with ones obtained with preset currents (bangbang) pulse width modulation, as the behaviour of the two strategies are similar. Finally, the results are cross analysed and further actions are proposed for the work continuation. This paper describes the effectiveness of observer-based output feedback for Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) with Linear Quadratic Regulation (LQR) performance. Tuning of observer parameters is crucial for tracking purpose. Prior to tuning facility, the ranges of observer and LQR parameters are obtained via system output cum error. The validation of this technique using unmanned underwater vehicles called Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) modelling helps to improve steady state performance of system response. The ROV modeling is focused for depth control using ROV 1 developed by the Underwater Technology Research Group (UTeRG). The results are showing that this technique improves steady state performances in term of overshoot and settling time of the system response.

Many background subtraction techniques have been developed in the past years to improve the precision of motion detection in video surveillance systems. Separating the moving objects from the background is a goal in every modern video surveillance system. Mixture of Gaussians (MoG) is one of the most complex methods used for motion detection in video sequences. This paper further investigates the MoG method. The algorithm is implemented in MATLAB and a typical traffic video is estimated. The accuracy of the algorithm is measured as a function of each variable parameter. An optimal set of parameters along with a filter are proposed in order to increase the performance. Copyright © 2013 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

In this study, brain, and gait dynamic information were combined and used for diagnosis and monitoring of Parkinson's disease (the most important Neurodegenerative Disorder). Analysis of the information corresponding to a prescribed movement involving tremor, and the related changes in brain connectivity is novel and original. Analytically, developing a space-time nonlinear adaptive system which fuses brain and gait information algorithmically is proposed here for the first time. The overall dynamic system will be constrained by the clinical impressions of the patient symptoms embedded in a knowledge-based system. The entire complex constrained problem were solved to enable a powerful model for recognition and monitoring of Parkinson's disease and establishing appropriate rules for its clinical following up.
