This paper describes the implementation of Wavelet Transform and Spectral Energy analysis on samples of simulated voltage and current waveforms obtained from PSCAD/EMTDC for each of the all possible fault scenarios in a modeled 500 kV transmission network. The fault detection and classification of each fault scenarios is determined based on results of the voltage and current waveforms analysis in time and wavelet domains. The analysis is carried out including variation in fault types, inception angles and locations with a practically arbitrarily assumed fault duration. The analytical results shows that the described technique is highly dependable and is able to detect and classify different kinds of faults along a transmission line whatever is the fault type, inception angle and location.

Driving frequency, amplitude and phase difference of two-phase sinusoidal voltages are the input parameters which have influence on speed stability of travelling wave ultrasonic motors (TWUSMs).These parameters are also time-varying due to the variations in operating temperature. In addition, a complete mathematical model of the TWUSM has not been derived yet. Owing to these reasons, a machine learning approach is required for determining the compatibility of operating parameters related to speed stability of TWUSMs. For this purpose, an intelligent decision support tool has been designed for TWUSMs in this study. The input parameters such as driving frequency, amplitude, phase difference of two-phase sinusoidal voltages and operating temperature were evaluated by the k-nearest neighbor algorithm in the decision support tool. The results have shown that the proposed tool provides effective results in the compatibility determination of operating parameters related to speed stability of TWUSMs.

The noise image is decomposed into the unknown true image u and the noise v by a new image de-noising method based on image decomposition. The common decomposition models are all dense and can only be transformed into high-order partial differential equations to solve, which are heavy computations. DT model and the Jiang model are sparse image decomposition models. A new image de-noising model based on the above two models is put forward in this paper. This new model is sparse which is defined in the new smooth space G p,qβ (smooth Besov space embedding) variational functional. The variational functional can be solved by second-generation Curvelet contraction threshold. Experimental results show that de-noising effect is better of the proposed model than these common models. ©2010 IEEE.

The underrepresentation of women in engineering programmes continues to be a world-wide phenomenon. The proportion of women has traditionally been especially low in the fields of electronics, computer science and mechanical engineering. This problem was noticed in the Department of Electrical and Communications engineering at Helsinki University of Technology in the late nineties. A series of gender and technology education projects was launched in 2001-2007. The projects were financed by the European Social Fund and the State Provincial Office of Southern Finland. In these projects, the first step was to consider the gender differences in both recruiting and retaining processes. Next, the aim was to create a guideline for solutions for persuading the best candidates to study our field and improve the working environment in a way that would benefit all the students, both female and male. The idea in the projects was to use our faculty as a pilot and then spread the best practises further. The main purposes of the projects were to promote female-friendly education, increase the proportion of female students, researchers and teachers as well as to develop more co-operative learning practices in curricula. Lots of activities were conducted during the projects, including interdisciplinary courses, mentoring programs, occupational coaching, elementary school co-operation, best-practice material delivery and subject-related websites. The lasting improvements that resulted, both directly and indirectly, from the projects were a well-established tutoring system, a more interdisciplinary curriculum, networking meetings for female researchers and a yearly women's day event covering the whole university as well as comprehensive school girls and alumnae. Over a million of Euros was invested in these projects and the number of participants was over 7000. The results of these projects can be seen in figures. Polishing is a highly skilled manufacturing process with a lot of constraint and interaction with environment. Unfortunately, manual polishing process takes time consuming of the total manufacturing time and takes a significant cost. On top of that, undesired working condition exists due to dust and noise and next it is quite difficult to find skilled technicians. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an automation system on the polishing process. One of the automation systems that are often developed by the industry is the use of robots. The goal is to handle the repetitive work that humans are not able to do so. In general, the purpose of polishing is to get the uniform surface roughness distributed evenly throughout part's surface. This research combines computer vision and robotics systems to overcome the problems arising in the polishing process. Vision system is used to measure surface defect that divide into several categories. The surface data is learned using artificial neural networks then give the decisions to move the actuator on robot. Parameters that developed in this system are force and time polishing which has a significant effect on the polishing process. Therefore, this system studies the characteristics of surface defects before the given action with different value of force and polishing time, and then compared with surface defects after given the action. Results obtained show that it is possible to obtain surface parameters using vision-based methods with a certain limit of accuracy. However, there are some advantages using this system, including faster polishing time, simpler quality inspection, and more evenly surface roughness result compared with manual polishing. The overall results of this research would encourage further developments to achieve robust computer vision technique for robotic polishing application.

The paper proposes a new approach to fuzzy abduction by extending the contraposition rule of propositional logic. The main difficulty of fuzzy abduction is due to the restriction of single antecedent clause in a fuzzy production rule. When more than one antecedent clause occurs jointly in a fuzzy rule, the membership value of the derived antecedent clauses become equal, which should not be the case in general. The paper overcomes this problem and demonstrates a simple but elegant method to compute premises in a multi-chained reasoning system.

The paper presents the features of passive filters and some of the topologies used for the improving of power quality. One has in view aspects on the designing of passive filters tuned for some harmonic components. One presents some recordings and numerical simulations made over the electric signals from a substation used for the supplying of a d.c. line of 600 V. Based on the obtained results one proposes solutions for passive compensations with the consideration of a number of filtering components that depends on the compensation necessities. In order to verify the compensation efficiency, through SPICE simulation, one estimates the effects of compensation correlated with the number of passive filtering cells.

Software testing is one of the most important techniques used to assure the quality of Web Services at present. Test-data generation is an important topic in Web Services testing. The quality of test data will influence the efficiency and cost when testing Web Services. Based on the contract-based mutation testing technique, this paper presents a method of automated test-data generation for Web Services. First, according to the description information and contracts in WSDL documents of Web Services, initial test data are generated automatically by the random method. Then the test data are selected using contract mutation testing. This method can generate a test suite meeting a certain contract mutation score, which indicates the quality and efficiency of testing. Finally, we have developed a prototype on the *** platform, and carried out some experiments. The results have shown that the proposed method is effective in automated test-data generation for Web Services.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) is a dangerous condition where the weakening of the aortic wall leads to its deformation and the generation of a thrombus. To prevent a possible rupture of the aortic wall, AAAs can be treated non-invasively by means of the Endovascular Aneurysm Repair technique (EVAR), which consists of placing a stent-graft inside the aorta in order to exclude the bulge from the blood circulation and usually leads to its contraction. Nevertheless, the bulge may continue to grow without any apparent leak. In order to effectively assess the changes experienced after surgery, it is necessary to segment the aneurysm, which is a very time-consuming task. Here we describe the initial results of a novel model-based approach for the semi-automatic segmentation of both the lumen and the thrombus of AAAs, using radial functions constrained by a priori knowledge and spatial coherency. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
