In high-power current-source inverter (CSI) fed drives, reduction of losses in semiconductor devices and dc-link inductor through the dc-link current minimization is one of the primary goals. In this paper, a control strategy for the high power CSI-fed interior permanent magnet (IPM) drive is proposed for this purpose. This control strategy keeps the dc-link current at minimum level without exceeding the motor and drive operating limit. The proposed strategy includes two control methods based on field oriented control scheme of the CSI-fed IPM drive. These control methods are a maximum modulation index control scheme and an optimal stator current angle algorithm. In case of the modulation index control scheme, it is found from the relation between the dc-link current and the modulation index that the dc-link current can be reduced by setting the inverter modulation index to maximum value. In case of the optimal stator current angle algorithm, the relationship between the stator current angle and the dc-link current is first investigated thoroughly. Based on this analysis, the dc-link current can be kept as low as possible without exceeding the voltage operating limit of the motor. This can be achieved by choosing the proper stator current angle based on motor stator voltage limit. As a result of the proposed control strategy, the dc-link and switching devices loss are reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is evaluated by both simulation and experimental results. The complete drive is implemented in real time using 10 kW CSI fed drive system with 8.7 hp interior permanent magnet synchronous motor.

Shielding of buried three phase high voltage cables can be done by placing the cables in conducting ferromagnetic U-shaped gutters covered by plates. In case of a perfect electrical contact between adjacent gutters and between adjacent cover plates, the induced currents in the shield efficiently reduce the field generated in the vicinity of the cables. However, as a perfect contact cannot be guaranteed, it is useful to quantify the effect of a bad electrical contact on the shielding performance. From 2D FEM, 3D FEM and experiments, it is observed that a bad contact does not influence significantly the shielding if the axial length of the plates is relatively long compared to their other dimensions. © 2010 IEEE.

Polishing is a highly skilled manufacturing process with a lot of constraint and interaction with environment. Unfortunately, manual polishing process takes time consuming of the total manufacturing time and takes a significant cost. On top of that, undesired working condition exists due to dust and noise and next it is quite difficult to find skilled technicians. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an automation system on the polishing process. One of the automation systems that are often developed by the industry is the use of robots. The goal is to handle the repetitive work that humans are not able to do so. In general, the purpose of polishing is to get the uniform surface roughness distributed evenly throughout part's surface. This research combines computer vision and robotics systems to overcome the problems arising in the polishing process. Vision system is used to measure surface defect that divide into several categories. The surface data is learned using artificial neural networks then give the decisions to move the actuator on robot. Parameters that developed in this system are force and time polishing which has a significant effect on the polishing process. Therefore, this system studies the characteristics of surface defects before the given action with different value of force and polishing time, and then compared with surface defects after given the action. Results obtained show that it is possible to obtain surface parameters using vision-based methods with a certain limit of accuracy. However, there are some advantages using this system, including faster polishing time, simpler quality inspection, and more evenly surface roughness result compared with manual polishing. The overall results of this research would encourage further developments to achieve robust computer vision technique for robotic polishing application.

Nowadays, there are huge ranges of energy market participants. Commercial success of this area actor depends on the ability to submit competitive predictions relative to energy balance trends Thus, it seems convenient to “anticipate” this parameter evolution in time in order to act consequently and resort to protective actions. In this context, this paper proposes a tool for energy balance prediction based on ANFIS (Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System). This neuro- fuzzy predictor is modified in order to obtain an accurate forecasting for medium term. The solutions are illustrated on a real application and take into account the known “future”: the programmed actions.

This paper introduces an approach to decision support systems in service-oriented automation control systems, which considers the knowledge extracted from the Petri nets models used to describe and execute the process behavior. Such solution optimizes the decision-making taking into account multi-criteria, namely productive parameters and also energy parameters. In fact, being manufacturing processes typically energy-intensive, this allows contributing for a clean and saving environment (i.e. a better and efficient use of energy). The preliminary experimental results, using a real laboratorial case study, demonstrate the applicability of the knowledge extracted from the Petri nets models to support real-time decision-making systems in service-oriented automation systems, considering some energy efficiency criteria.

In service-oriented systems, composition of services is required to build new, distributed and more complex services, based on the logic behavior of individual ones. This paper discusses the formal composition of Petri nets models used for the process description and control in service-oriented automation systems. The proposed approach considers two forms for the composition of services, notably the offline composition, applied during the design phase, and the online composition, related to the synchronization of Petri nets models on the fly. An experimental case study is used to illustrate the proposed composition approach. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel method for the specification and selection of criteria-weighted operation modes for the orchestration of services in industrial automation using Petri nets. The objective is to provide to the internal decision support system of a service-oriented automation device or of another applicable computational system the capability to select the best path in a Petri net orchestration model considering different criteria to evaluate the quality of services, such as the time, energy efficiency and reliability. The transition-invariants obtained from the Petri net represent the set of possible modi operandi and these are then weighted with decision criteria. The result will be afterwards evaluated in order to select the optimal modus operandi to be executed by the device. Based on the experiments, this method permits the dynamic optimization of processes in real-time, considering available parameters from devices and other resources. © 2010 IEEE.

Preventive maintenance (PM) has been considered on many scheduling problems, however, the problem of scheduling jobs and PM on fuzzy job shop are seldom investigated. This paper presents a random key genetic algorithm (RKGA) for the problem with resumable jobs and PM in the fixed time intervals. RKGA uses a novel random key representation, a new decoding strategy incorporating maintenance operation, and discrete crossover. RKGA is applied to some instances to minimize the maximum fuzzy completion time. Computational results show the optimization ability of RKGA on fuzzy scheduling with PM.

Genetic algorithm has been successfully applied to fuzzy job shop scheduling problem, however, the coding and decoding strategies of the problem aren't fully investigated. This paper presents an efficient random key genetic algorithm (RKGA) for the problem to minimize the maximum fuzzy completion time. RKGA uses a novel random key representation, a new decoding strategy and discrete crossover. RKGA is applied to some fuzzy scheduling instances and compared with a genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization with genetic operators. Computational results demonstrate that RKGA has the promising advantage on fuzzy scheduling.

The unbalanced magnetic forces which act upon the rotor of a salient-pole synchronous generator due to eccentric motion of the rotor shaft in the presence of magnetic field originating from the field current in no-load operation have been calculated using finite-element method. The displacement of the rotor has been modeled using the actual shaft orbit recorded on a 5 MVA salient-pole generator driven by a gas turbine in a cogeneration plant. The results indicate that a variation of unbalanced forces in no-load operation at rated voltage occurs at the precession frequency of 25 Hz with maximum force of 2.32 kN.
