Power system angle stability can be improved by a wide variety of controls. Some methods have been used effectively for many years, both at generating plants and in transmission network. In this paper, two methods are proposed to improve control stability. The first consists to find the critical clearing time (CCT) by equal area stability criterion and numerical integration. The second interests to fuzzy logic controllers. For this last method, we present the nonlinear model with a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model. Then a model-based in fuzzy controller design utilizing the concept of the so-called "parallel distributed compensation" (PDC) is employed. Stability analysis and control design problems can be reduced to linear matrix inequality (LMI) problems. Therefore, they can be solved efficiently in practice by convex programming techniques for LMI's. A single machine infinite bus system is analysed with the proposed methods.

This paper reviews what the first Author and his Group have been investigating for the past decade in the on-line steady-state hierarchical intelligent control and optimization of large-scale industrial processes (LSIP), as well as large-scale systems (LSS). The techniques include the use of neural networks for identification and optimization, the use of expert systems to solve some kinds of hierarchical multi-objective optimization problems, the use of the fuzzy logic control and the use of the iterative learning control. In addition, several implementation examples and the product quality control for LSS are introduced. Finally the paper prospects the new stages of development.

In early design phases three main levels of abstraction (the function, the principle and the embodiment design) can be distinguished, which describe results of the synthesis process. Suitable representations exist for these three levels of abstraction. For a continuous computeraided product design a phase overlapping multi-stage modeling is necessary, which connects the different abstraction levels and the according representations. The aim of the paper is the presentation of a concept for multi-stage modeling and first results of an according software implementation, which supports an iterative design. The described approach is restricted to conceptual design and to the first steps in embodiment design of mechanisms and gears.
