FSIW Cavity-Based Self-Packaging Filtering Slot Antennas with Wide-Stopband and High Frequency Selectivity

This article proposes a novel design approach for miniaturized, highly selective, self-packaged, and wide-stopband filtering slot antennas based on C- and T-type folded substrate integrated waveguide (C-/T-FSIW) cavities. Firstly, two forms of FSIW cavity are explored and analyzed. A new coupled C-type half-mode FSIW (C-HMFSIW) cavities are developed. A filtering antenna is proposed, employing a C-HMFSIW cavity for feeding and a slot-loaded C-FSIW cavity for radiation. By introducing cross-coupling between different resonators, a radiation null (RN) is achieved. To further enhance bandwidth and frequency selectivity, a new antenna configuration is developed using a C-HMFSIW cavity for feeding and a slot-loaded T-FSIW cavity for radiation. After loading the radiation slot, the T-FSIW cavity serves as two parts: one as the main radiator and the other as a parasitic radiator opposite to it. This configuration increases antenna bandwidth and generates an additional RN. Interestingly, adjusting the position of the radiation slot allows the RN to switch between the upper and lower stopbands. The antennas proposed in this work exhibit good stopband performance and compact size. Three filtering antenna prototypes are designed, fabricated, and measured, showing consistent results between measurements and simulations. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

A Fast-Digital Current Regulator Based on Matched Pole-Zero Discretization for PMSM

Continuous-time methods design the synchronous-frame current regulator in the S-domain and then discretize it into the Z-domain using the Tustin or Euler method for digital implementation. This process causes discretization errors that significantly impair the performance of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives, especially at a low sampling-to-fundamental frequency ratio (SFR). A direct discrete-time method, design the current regulator directly in the Z-domain with improved dynamic performances. However, it results in online calculations of exponential terms that increase the execution time of the control loop, particularly for Interior PMSM (IPMSM). Therefore, this paper proposes a novel design approach of a digital current regulator with a high discretization accuracy and fast execution time. The proposed method is a combination of the multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) decoupling and matching pole-zero (MPZ) discretization concepts. MIMO decoupling is used to cancel accurately the poles of the plant that migrate with the motor's speed/frequency change in the S-domain. The MPZ method is used to discretize accurately the current regulator from S-domain to Z-domain. A new approximation concept for the calculation of the exponential matrix is adopted to reduce the complexity of the proposed approach. Thus, with the synthesized current regulator, the execution time is reduced significantly compared to the direct discrete-time design methods while keeping the same decoupling and dynamic performances even under low SFRs. Simulations and experiments performed on IPMSM drives have successfully verified the proposed design method, and results show improved decoupling performance and robustness against the variation of parameters with better current harmonic distortion. © 2015 IEEE.

The article presents the current approach in artificial intelligence methods used in predictive maintenance for electrical motors. The study focuses on presenting data classification methods for fault detection and isolation using data from condition monitoring systems. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using machine learning methods like perceptron and Support Vector Machine (SVM) for fault classification problems. Our conclusion shows great interest in machine learning methods combined with condition monitoring systems. Our future research will focus on comparing SVM, perceptron networks, and other methods, such as K-nearest neighbors, with their possibility for implementation in embedded firmware systems.

PP-SSL: Priority-Perception Self-Supervised Learning for Fine-Grained Visual Recognition

Self-supervised learning is emerging in fine-grained visual recognition with promising results. However, existing self-supervised learning methods are often susceptible to irrelevant patterns in self-supervised tasks and lack the capability to represent the subtle differences inherent in fine-grained visual recognition (FGVR), resulting in generally poorer performance. To address this, we propose a novel Priority-Perception Self-Supervised Learning framework, denoted as PP-SSL, which can effectively filter out irrelevant feature interference and extract more subtle discriminative features throughout the training process. Specifically, it composes of two main parts: the Anti-Interference Strategy (AIS) and the Image-Aided Distinction Module (IADM). In AIS, a fine-grained textual description corpus is established, and a knowledge distillation strategy is devised to guide the model in eliminating irrelevant features while enhancing the learning of more discriminative and high-quality features. IADM reveals that extracting GradCAM from the original image effectively reveals subtle differences between fine-grained categories. Compared to features extracted from intermediate or output layers, the original image retains more detail, allowing for a deeper exploration of the subtle distinctions among fine-grained classes. Extensive experimental results indicate that the PP-SSL significantly outperforms existing methods across various datasets, highlighting its effectiveness in fine-grained recognition tasks. A phase demodulation method immune to laser phase noise based on time-delay beat-frequency coherent Φ-OTDR is proposed. In this method, the two Rayleigh backscattered light beams with time delay are beat with local light beams respectively, and the phase difference of the two beat signals is used instead of the traditional distance-difference phase to obtain the local disturbance information. In this way, the impact of laser phase noise introduce by the distance-difference phase is avoid, and the constraint of laser linewidth on phase demodulation performance is weakened. In the experiment, a demodulation accuracy of -63.5dB rad2/Hz is achieved under the condition of a laser with a linewidth of 100kHz, which is improve by 11dB compared to traditional phase demodulation method. © 2023 IEEE.

Method to design a neural network with minimal number of neurons for approximation problems

The widespread use of neural networks to model complex processes requires that a parsimonious model of the process be obtained. One of the main variables in neural networks is the number of neurons in the hidden layer. Selecting an inappropriate number of neurons can lead to over- or underfitting. Therefore, a method is required which determines the appropriate number of neurons in order to approximate a defined system response or time function. This paper presents a proposition to determine the appropriate number of neurons in a feedforward neural network, based on the number of inflection points included in the system response or the time function. The results show that the proposed method has marginal approximation errors (no underfitting) and overfitting can never occur because the minimal number of neurons for the approximation problem is used. To verify the effectiveness of this method, simulations were carried out on a second-order system with and without noise, the Lotka-Volterra equations, and the Runge function.

In the dynamic landscape of energy efficiency, a domain garnering ever increasing attention and urgency, the cornerstone of informed decision-making resides in the acquisition of reliable data. This paper summarizes the main approaches, methods and hardware used to gather, process and disaggregate such data on an appliance-by-appliance basis. The paper explores a critical analysis of the various models and techniques that support the gathering of energy data at the appliance level. A range of approaches, including hardware-based solutions such as smart meters, submeters, and sensor arrays, placing a special focus on intrusive load monitoring (ILM) and non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) algorithms that employ advanced signal processing and machine learning techniques, are examined for their effectiveness, scalability, and suitability for both industrial and commercial contexts. Furthermore, the challenges of data acquisition capabilities, reconciling scalability, cost-effectiveness, and user-friendliness - prerequisites for widespread acceptance and uptake are also investigated.
