This paper deals with the actuator fault diagnosis and accommodation problem for the aero space vehicle (ASV). A novel nonlinear robust adaptive observer is developed for estimation of the actuator fault under the Lipschitz condition on the nonlinear part of such systems, which is used to continuously accommodate the control signal, so as to ensure the stability of faulty system. Finally, simulation results about ASV are presented to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods.

This paper is concerned with prototype development and motion control of a dolphin-like underwater robot. The propulsion and maneuvering of the robotic dolphin are realized with the flapping motion of the mechanical flippers and the combined heaving and pitching motions of the fluke. Mechanical design and control of the flipper apparatus and the flexible tail mechanism are presented. Through coordinated control of the propulsors, several swimming movements are designed. Preliminary experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed design scheme.

A hybrid network of evolutionary processors (an HNEP) is a graph where each node is associated with a language processor (an evolutionary processor), a set of words, an input filter and an output filter. The evolutionary processor performs one type of point mutations (insertion, deletion or substitution) on the words in that node. The filters are defined by certain variants of random-context conditions. In this paper, by improving our previous result, we prove that HNEPs with 7 nodes are able to generate any recursively enumerable language. We also show that the family of HNEPs with 2 nodes is not computationally complete.

This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article. A considerable amount of research has been done on the use of logarithmic quantizers for networked feedback control systems. However, most results are developed for the case of a single quantizer (either measurement or control signal quantization). In this paper, we investigate the case of simultaneous input and output quantization for SISO linear output feedback systems. Firstly, we show that the problem of quadratic stabilization via quantized feedback can be addressed with no conservativeness by means of the sector bound approach. Secondly, we provide a bound on the maximal admissible sector bound via a scaled H ¿ optimization problem.

Interoperability plays an important role for a variety of applications. One of them are Peer Data Management Systems, where autonomous data sources (peers) interact with each other based on semantic mappings between their schemas. The building blocks that enable interoperability and thus the main challenges in such systems are mapping representation, query rewriting, and efficient query processing. While most approaches regard these aspects in separate this paper presents a comprehensive study of the interactions between these blocks. Our considerations try to provide a holistic view on semantic interoperability in distributed environments such as PDMS. We discuss techniques for distributed query processing and rewriting that consider high-level query operators such as top-N and skyline. Furthermore, we discuss how to increase efficiency by applying routing indexes and relaxation of result completeness/correctness.

The rapid growth of demand in mobile networks leads to peak-load traffic congestion. The congestion problem is a serious concern because it degrades the quality of service. Reducing the peak time load improves the overall system utilization. Hardly few information has been published about real measurements from any mobile network operator. The aim of this work is to present and discuss the efficiency of changing pricing policies in reducing the congestion and enhancing the productivity of mobile networks. Daily network real measurements (using the operator equipments such as TEMS investigation) were analysed at on- and off-peak times before and after applying two pricing schemes. These included either encouraging all customers to use reduced-cost off-peak calls or limiting on-peak usage with more offers at off-peak times for fixed price plan customers. Our results show that reducing offpeak call prices improve performance throughout the day. 35%, 50% reduction in the average blocking rates and a range of 321% and 10-35% decrease in the peak load were achieved with the two pricing plans applied. Mobile operators can use these pricing policies as a means to decrease the peak load and enhance the network revenue. © 2007 IEEE.

The implementation complexity of classical algorithms for wind turbines control limits the utilization of low-end microcontrollers for such applications. We conceived an original method that aims to optimize the efficiency of windmills with fixed blades with the variation of the wind speed. In the paper we present an original method to determine generator's efficiency values using measurements that were performed at the prototype's homologation, along with original simplified models of wind turbine and of wind turbine - generator assembly. Measured values of the frequency, voltage and current of the generator are applied to determine the turbine rotation speed and the wind speed, reducing thus the number of needed sensors. A couple of families of regression functions were derived and tuned accordingly to the factory experimental characteristics to allow for a facile calculation of the generator's efficiency database table. To further speedup the assessment of the optimum/safety value of the windmill rotation speed, the generator's model is considered to provide the rotation as a function of the wind speed in a tabular format that is further used at run-time as a look-table for rapid interpolations in the control loop. The main advantages of the proposed approach are the simplicity and robustness of the implementation, being easily portable to low-end microcontroller platforms.

Remote process control and supervision applications developed over the Internet require special communication models and techniques, which can guarantee the real-time and safety restrictions inherent to automation systems. This paper presents a communication model based on data flow analysis and bandwidth reservation that offers a good control over the transmission time of critical data. As part of the model, an analytical method is proposed that allows apriory evaluation of the required minimum bandwidth necessary to assure the fulfillment of real-time transmission restrictions. The model is based on the QoS facilities offered by the IPv6 protocol. © 2007 IEEE.
