This scientific paper examines the use of collaborative robots in the context of Industry 5.0 and its impact on practical engineering education. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance as well as the challenges of using robots in Industry 5.0 and to analyze how this can be integrated into engineering education. The paper discusses various aspects such as the technological advances, the need for interaction between humans and robots, and the competencies that engineers need in an increasingly digitalized working world. Furthermore, practical methods and approaches in engineering education at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied sciences are presented to prepare students for the requirements of Industry 5.0. Additionally, a draft of a future interdisciplinary learning factory 5.0 will be presented, in which networked technologies with the focus on robotics run through various scenarios in the context of Industry 5.0 at different locations.

Discrete-time Formation Control With Attitude Alignment: A Geometric Approach under Ergodic Products

Assuming agents possess sensing capabilities and dynamics relative to their body coordinate frames, this paper addresses a displacement-based strategy for discrete-time formation control through attitude synchronization. Unlike the Eulerian approximation, the first challenge lies in developing discrete-time models that capture both position and attitude motions, thereby complementing existing continuous-time systems with a discretized version. Then, two leader-following control protocols are designed, incorporating a jointly-connected topology to relax the connectivity requirements. The analysis of these systems often relies on the Lyapunov function, the existence of which may be hard to guarantee. Consequently, geometric properties of several polytopes are explored under the dynamic topologies and time-varying parameters. By extending the ergodicity results to leader-following scenarios, these properties are characterized as positively invariant sets. This invariance, which is independent of the existence of the Lyapunov function or the solvability of its associated criteria, provides a beneficial tool for analyzing time-variant systems. Utilizing this invariance and some mathematical techniques, the desired formation shape can be achieved in the cases where the attitudes of the followers synchronize with the leader. Finally, a numerical simulation validates the results. © 2014 IEEE.

Human body motion tracking is a key technique in robotics, virtual reality and other human–computer interaction fields, for interactive mixed reality applications. Human motion tracking for rehabilitation is widely discussed by researchers in the last period, being motivated by the increased number of patients with motor function disability. For such patients rehabilitation is an important step to restore their functional capability to normal or close to normal. To reach this target, a patients’ activities need to be continuously monitored, and subsequently corrected. This involves accurate identification, tracking, and post-processing of movement. This paper thus proposes an open loop real time angle computation algorithm designed in Matlab®. Its efficacy was tested using an Arduino Nano® coupled with the MPU-6050 as the Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). The advantages of the proposed algorithm are presented by comparison with the already existing and widely used methods.

Multi-Domains Personalized Local Differential Privacy Frequency Estimation Mechanism for Utility Optimization

Local Differential Privacy (LDP) has garnered considerable attention in recent years because it does not rely on trusted third parties and has low interactivity and high operational efficiency. However, current LDP frequency estimation mechanisms aggregate data using different privacy budgets within the same data domain, overlooking the aggregation requirements across different data domains. This limits the potential for enhancing the data utility under fixed privacy budgets and meeting user preferences in multiple data domains and privacy budgets. To address this issue, we define a Multi-Domains Personalized Local Differential Privacy (MDPLDP) model that allows users to freely choose data domains and privacy budgets according to their privacy preferences. Furthermore, based on the MDPLDP model, two new frequency estimation mechanisms are proposed: MDPLDP-Generalized Randomized Response and MDPLDP-basic Randomized Aggregatable Privacy-Preserving Ordinal Response. These mechanisms support cross-domains data aggregation and optimize data utility by adjusting the data domains and increasing privacy budgets. Theoretical analysis reveals that these new mechanisms have lower estimation errors than the traditional LDP mechanisms. Experiments on real and synthetic datasets demonstrate that the proposed mechanisms effectively reduce estimation errors and enhance the utility of data-frequency estimation. © 2024, The Authors. Automatic breast tumor segmentation based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is significant for the diagnosis and monitoring of breast cancers. CNNs have become an important method for early diagnosis of breast cancer and, thus, can help decrease the mortality rate. In order to assist medical professionals in breast cancer investigation a computerized system based on two encoder-decoder architectures for breast tumor segmentation has been developed. Two pre-trained DeepLabV3+ and U-Net models are proposed. The encoder generates a high-dimensional feature vector while the decoder analyses the low-resolution feature vector provided by the encoder and generates a semantic segmentation mask. Semantic segmentation based on deep learning techniques can overcome the limitations of traditional algorithms. To assess the efficiency of breast ultrasound image segmentation, we compare the segmentation results provided by CNNs against the Local Graph Cut technique (a semi-automatic segmentation method) in the Image Segmenter application. The output segmentation results have been evaluated by using the Dice similarity coefficient that compares the ground truth images provided by the specialists against the predicted segmentation results provided by the CNNs and Local Graph Cut algorithm. The proposed approach is validated on 780 breast ultrasonographic images of the BUSI public database of which 437 are benign and 210 are malignant. The BUSI database provides classification (benign or malignant) labels for ground truth in binary mask images. The average Dice scores computed between the ground truth images against CNNs were as follows: 0.9360 (malignant) and 0.9325 (benign) for the DeepLabV3+ architecture and of 0.6251 (malignant) and 0.6252 (benign) for the U-Net, respectively. When the segmentation results provided by CNNs were compared with the Local Graph Cut segmented images, the Dice scores were 0.9377 (malignant) and 0.9204 (benign) for DeepLabV3+ architecture and 0.61

Fractional-order PID (FOPID) controllers have gained increasing interest in control theory in recent years, mainly to improve the performance and stability of complex systems. FOPID controllers are a generalization of classical PID controllers that have both integral and derivative orders of fractional order. This means that instead of having three tuning parameters as in classical PID, there are two additional degrees of freedom to achieve the control objectives. At the same time, the structure of the PID controller, so valued in industrial applications, is retained. A preferred method for designing FOPID controllers is the use of optimization algorithms. Different objective functions are used, such as the integral of the square error (ISE), the integral of the absolute error (IAE), the integral of the time-weighted absolute error (ITAE) or the integral of the time-weighted square error (ITSE), which must be minimized in order to adjust the five unknown parameters of the FOPID controller. There are several papers discussing different optimization methods and objective functions for different applications, but there are no general recommendations to help engineers choose the right method for their design. The present research compares three of the most well-known nature-inspired optimization techniques from the point of view of a FOPID controller design tool, using all the above enumerated objective functions. The analysis is realized both for processes with large time constants (such as thermal processes) and for dynamic systems (such as mechatronic processes), presenting the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

An End-to-End Model for Multi-View Scene Text Recognition

Due to the increasing applications of surveillance and monitoring such as person re-identification, vehicle re-identification and sports events tracking, the necessity of text detection and end-to-end recognition is also growing. Although the past deep learning-based models have addressed several challenges, such as arbitrary-shaped text, multiple scripts, and variation in the geometric structure of characters, the scope of the models is limited to a single view. This paper presents an end-to-end model for text recognition through refining the multi-views of the same scene, which is called E2EMVSTR (End-to-End Model for Multi-View Scene Text Recognition). Considering the common characteristics shared in multi-view texts, we propose a cycle consistency pairwise similarity-based deep learning model to find texts more efficiently in three input views. Further, the extracted texts are supplied to a Siamese network and semi-supervised attention embedding combinational network for obtaining recognition results. The proposed model combines natural language processing and genetic algorithm models to restore missing character information and correct wrong recognition results. In experiments on our multi-view dataset and several benchmark datasets, the proposed method is proven effective compared to state-of-the-art methods. Full-field electroretinography examinations of the human eye with the eye diagnostic device PEP-2000-First results

Full-field electroretinography (full-field ERG) forms the diagnostic basis for numerous pathologies of the eye. For this reason, fast and accurate diagnostics in the field of ophthalmology are essential. Two examination techniques, full-field ERG and pupillometry were combined in a diagnostic device developed by ICM e.V. to reduce the examination process for both examiners and patients. In this paper, the device is examined for the quality of the full-field ERG measurements. A feasibility study with 12 healthy subjects (3 f, 9 m, 36.33 ± 11.94 years) was conducted to evaluate the device. The results showed that the peak times for both light-and dark-adapted measurements were within the range of the researched literature values. However, the amplitudes were markedly lower in both measurements compared to the averaged literature values (dark-adapted about 8.5-fold and light-adapted about 5.5-fold) and are clearly outside the range of values researched. The main reason for this is the use of cup electrodes, which were placed on the skin of the lower eyelid. Nevertheless, plausible and comparable analysis values could be obtained with the eye diagnostic device PEP-2000. Technical light-field setup for 3D imaging of the human nerve head validated with an eye model

With the new technology of 3D light field (LF) imaging, fundus photography can be expanded to provide depth information. This increases the diagnostic possibilities and additionally improves image quality by digitally refocusing. To provide depth information in the human optic nerve head such as in glaucoma diagnostics, a mydriatic fundus camera was upgraded with an LF imager. The aim of the study presented here was the validation of the technical setup and resulting depth estimations with an appropriate eye model. The technical setup consisted of a mydriatic fundus camera (FF450, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) and an LF imager (R12, Raytrix GmbH, Kiel, Germany). The field of view was set to 30°. The eye model (24.65 mm total length) consisted of a two-lens optical system and interchangeable fundus models with papilla excavations from 0.2 to 1 mm in steps of 0.2 mm. They were coated with red acrylic lacquer and vessels were drawn with a thin brush. 15 images were taken for each papilla depth illuminated with green light (wavelength 520 nm ± 20 nm). Papilla depth was measured from the papilla ground to the surrounding flat region. All 15 measurements for each papilla depth were averaged and compared to the printed depth. It was possible to perform 3D fundus imaging in an eye model by means of a novel LF-based optical setup. All LF images could be digitally refocused subsequently. Depth estimation in the eye model was successfully performed over a 30° field of view. The measured virtual depth and the printed model papilla depth is linear correlated. The presented LF setup allowed high-quality 3D one-shot imaging and depth estimation of the optic nerve head in an eye model. © 2021 by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston.
