Technical light-field setup for 3D imaging of the human nerve head validated with an eye model

With the new technology of 3D light field (LF) imaging, fundus photography can be expanded to provide depth information. This increases the diagnostic possibilities and additionally improves image quality by digitally refocusing. To provide depth information in the human optic nerve head such as in glaucoma diagnostics, a mydriatic fundus camera was upgraded with an LF imager. The aim of the study presented here was the validation of the technical setup and resulting depth estimations with an appropriate eye model. The technical setup consisted of a mydriatic fundus camera (FF450, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) and an LF imager (R12, Raytrix GmbH, Kiel, Germany). The field of view was set to 30°. The eye model (24.65 mm total length) consisted of a two-lens optical system and interchangeable fundus models with papilla excavations from 0.2 to 1 mm in steps of 0.2 mm. They were coated with red acrylic lacquer and vessels were drawn with a thin brush. 15 images were taken for each papilla depth illuminated with green light (wavelength 520 nm ± 20 nm). Papilla depth was measured from the papilla ground to the surrounding flat region. All 15 measurements for each papilla depth were averaged and compared to the printed depth. It was possible to perform 3D fundus imaging in an eye model by means of a novel LF-based optical setup. All LF images could be digitally refocused subsequently. Depth estimation in the eye model was successfully performed over a 30° field of view. The measured virtual depth and the printed model papilla depth is linear correlated. The presented LF setup allowed high-quality 3D one-shot imaging and depth estimation of the optic nerve head in an eye model. © 2021 by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston.

Visual scene recognition or modeling predominantly uses visual textures representing an object’s material properties. However, the single material texture varies in scale and illumination angles due to mapping an object’s shape. We present a comparative study of thirteen possible texture quality criteria and show the superior performance of two multispectral measures derived from the Markovian descriptive model.

Negative coupling is widely used in microwave filter design, especially for filters with finite transmission zeros (TZs). Conventionally, negative coupling is physically realized by capacitive irises or electrical probes. When negative coupling is small, the capacitive iris size usually becomes very small or the electrical probes need to be carefully placed, the manufacturing and tuning of filters, as a consequence, is of great challenge. In this paper, a coupling structure based on groove gap waveguide (GGW) is proposed to implement negative coupling and applied to a cascaded quadruplet (CQ) waveguide filter. The simulated and measured results demonstrate that the GGW coupling structure can perfectly replace the capacitive iris to implement the desirable negative coupling while favorably easing manufacturing difficulties caused by small negative couplings and lowering sensitivity to manufacturing tolerance for waveguide filters.

With the rapid development of the Internet, various network invasive behaviors are increasing rapidly. This seriously threatens the economic development of individuals, enterprises, and society. Network intrusion detection is important in network security systems, which can be regarded as a classification problem. It aims to distinguish between the specific categories of various network behaviors and determine whether the behavior belongs to network intrusion. However, network intrusions present a diverse and fast-changing trend, making categorizing difficult. Due to feature redundancy, uneven distribution of sample numbers, and inefficient parameter optimization, traditional rule-based approaches fail to achieve satisfying classification accuracy. This work proposes a multi-classification intrusion detection model based on Stacked Sparse Shrink AutoEncoder (SSSAE), Genetic Simulated annealing-based particle swarm optimization optimized Tabnet classifier (GS-Tabnet), and Decision Fusion (DF), called for SGTD short. Among them, SSSAE extracts multiple feature sets from the input data. Then GS-Tabnet trains a classifier for each feature set. Finally, the decision fusion fuses the results from these classifiers to obtain the final classification result. SGTD is compared with eight multi-classification benchmark models, and its intrusion detection accuracy is superior to its peers.

Accurate state of charge (SOC) estimation is crucial for the safe operation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), yet existing methods are limited by sensitivity to initial SOC guess or high computational complexity. To address these challenges, this study proposes an onboard back-forth moving horizon estimation (BFMHE) framework for SOC estimation, achieving high precision, robustness, and computational efficiency compatible with microcontroller implementation. An efficient linear equivalent circuit model (ECM) is established, where the open-circuit voltage-SOC relationship is approximated by piecewise linear functions. The proposed framework employs two MHE estimators that iteratively operate in opposite directions over a finite time horizon, which enables rapid convergence. Moreover, this study provides a rigorous proof of the stability of the BFMHE method for the battery system with current input. The proposed approach is validated experimentally under various operating conditions and with different initial SOC guesses. Experimental results show that the proposed onboard BFMHE method achieves a maximum estimation error of less than 1% and quickly converges to the true SOC value, demonstrating strong robustness to initial estimation errors. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Swaying Tree Simulation by Slicing Partition

The key of swaying tree simulation is to capture the essence of the interaction between wind and tree, which has not received much attention from scholars. In this paper, we present a method for simulating swaying tree based on slicing partition. The tree is divided into multiple "slices", and then jointly moved to simulate the tree swaying in wind. By slicing partition,the motion of any slice is independent of the others concurrently, which provides a parallel spatial topology for real-time calculation. Moreover, based on the fact that the wind will blow to a tree partly rather than the whole, partial swayings of the tree are also simulated. The experimental results show the correctness and effectiveness of our method.

Stabilizing SiPM output with adaptive temperature compensation in portable real-time PCR devices

Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology is essential in clinical pathogen measurement due to its high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Portable real-time PCR instruments, known for their quick response, mobility, and efficiency, are crucial for controlling emerging infectious diseases at the grassroots level. Silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), with their high gain, sensitivity, low bias voltage, magnetic field insensitivity, and compactness, are widely used in various applications, including real-time PCR instruments. However, the gain of SiPM is temperature-dependent, which affects performance stability. In grassroots measurement environments, inadequate heat dissipation during equipment operation can alter SiPM working temperatures, impacting performance. To address this, we propose an innovative technique using a pair of Polymethyl Methacrylate(PMMA) polymer reference samples to stabilize SiPM output against temperature variations. This method effectively controls SiPM output fluctuations within 1%, even with temperature changes exceeding 10∘C, enhancing the stability, portability, and cost-effectiveness of fluorescence PCR instrument optical systems. © 2025

Transformer-based Single-Cell Language Model: A Survey

The transformers have achieved significant accomplishments in the natural language processing as its outstanding parallel processing capabilities and highly flexible attention mechanism. In addition, increasing studies based on transformers have been proposed to model single-cell data. In this review, we attempt to systematically summarize the single-cell language models and applications based on transformers. First, we provide a detailed introduction about the structure and principles of transformers. Then, we review the single-cell language models and large language models for single-cell data analysis. Moreover, we explore the datasets and applications of single-cell language models in downstream tasks such as batch correction, cell clustering, cell type annotation, gene regulatory network inference and perturbation response. Further, we discuss the challenges of single-cell language models and provide promising research directions. We hope this review will serve as an up-to-date reference for researchers interested in the direction of single-cell language models. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The impact of technology affects the educational field in an extraordinary way. The effect of technology must be treated from the educational method itself as well as its horizon in the new paradigm of citizen in this smart environment. This work proposes a revision of the immediate future of education and citizenship, as determined by the exponential impact of technology, based on relevant issues of classic philosophy and specially along the history and didactic program of the Trivium (Grammar, Rhetoric and Logic). The paper analyses firstly the perspective of the transformation of current education towards a smart education. This transition is determined by the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the reflection on the competences of the 21st century, as something intrinsically related to the issues of citizenship as well as smart cities;secondly, we review the strategic and methodological proposals in accordance with this transformation, based on the theory of generative learning and on computational and algorithmic thinking;thirdly, from the point of view of contents, we analyse the importance of digital skills and, as a fundamental element of these, programming skills. Our proposal is to recover and update the contents of the Trivium, as a renewing and revitalizing element of the methodology and contents of education in the 21st century. This proposal is based on the assumption of the epistemological unity of these disciplines and on the integral anthropological vision that supports them. Both ideas acquire special relevance in the current context marked by the impact of technology as a determining element of the medium (smart education), of the methodology (generative learning, computational thinking) and of the contents (digital skills and programming). © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.
