Identification of emission sources of umbral flashes using phase congruency

The emission sources of umbral flashes （UFs） are believed to be closely related to running umbral and penumbral waves, and are concluded to be associated with umbral dots in the solar photosphere. Accurate identification of emission sources of UFs is crucial for investigating these physical phenomena and their inherent relationships. A relatively novel model of shape perception, namely phase congruency （PC）, uses phase information in the Fourier domain to identify the geometrical shape of the region of interest in different intensity levels, rather than intensity or gradient. Previous studies indicate that the model is suitable for identifying features with low contrast and low luminance. In the present paper, we applied the PC model to identify the emission sources of UFs and to locate their positions. For illustrating the high performance of our proposed method, two time sequences of Ca n H images derived from the Hinode/SOT on 2010 August 10 and 2013 August 20 were used. Furthermore, we also compared these results with the analysis results that are identified by the traditional/classical identification methods, including the gray-scale adjusted technique and the running difference technique. The result of our analysis demonstrates that our proposed method is more accurate and effective than the traditional identification methods when applied to identifying the emission sources of UFs and to locating their positions.

The paper presents the motion simulation of a Wing in Ground craft with a Lippisch configuration which is stable in terms of static stability. The influence of wind and wave perturbations on the dynamic stability of the flight are investigated. The analysis of safety and stability used two different approaches. Based on frequency domain simulation, the first approach derived from the classical stability theory utilizes the aerodynamic coefficients and their linearized derivatives. The second approach based on time domain simulation uses the coefficients with full respect to the nonlinear character of aerodynamics in ground effect. The trajectory is used to evaluate the dynamic stability and flight safety of the craft. From the results for typical perturbations, the limitations of the classical stability theory for the flight safety of Wing in Ground craft are shown. The results show the necessity of the automatic control system even for a satisfying stable craft predicted by the linear theory. The demand of high performance together with the hard constraints for states and control inputs are challenging for the controller design. A proportional-integral-derivative controller is studied to secure the flight safety of small craft under different perturbation and a methodology for designing a control system for operation under various weather conditions is illustrated. Complex networks from scopes like Sociology or Biology are exist in many e-science data sets. Mostly we need to computational algorithms for dealing with networks. For Example, detecting characteristic patterns, network motifs or problem involving sub-graph mining and graph isomorphism. In this paper, we provide a review and runtime comparison of current popular motif identification algorithms. We will categorize the algorithms outlining the major differences and each strategy's advantages;and finally execute current strategies in the same platform on Bioinformatic applications and compare the results. Evolution of isolated G-band bright points: size, intensity and velocity

We study the evolution pattern of isolated G-band bright points （GBPs） in terms of their size, intensity and velocity. Using a high resolution image sequence taken with the Hinode/Solar Optical Telescope （SOT）, we detect GBPs in each image by the Laplacian and Morphological Dilation algorithm, and track their evolutions by a 26-adjacent method in a three-dimensional space-time cube. For quantifying the evolution, we propose a quantification method based on lifetime normalization which aligns the different lifetimes to common stages. The quantification results show that, on average, the diameter of isolated GBPs changes from 166 to 173 km, then down to 165 km; the maximum intensity contrast changes from 1.012 to 1.027, then down to 1.011; however, the velocity changes from 1.709 to 1.593 km s-1, then up to 1.703 km s-i. The results indicate that the evolution follows a pattern such that the GBP is small, faint and fast-moving at the birth stage, becomes big, bright and slow-moving at the middle stage, then gets small, faint and fast-moving at the decay stage until disappearance. Although the differences are very small, a two-sample t-test is used to demonstrate there are significant differences in means between the distri- butions of the different stages. Furthermore, we quantify the relationship between the lifetimes of GBPs and their properties. It is found that there are positive correlations between the lifetimes and their sizes and intensities with correlation coefficients of 0.83 and 0.65, respectively; however, there is a negative correlation between the life- times and velocities with a correlation coefficient of-0.49. In summary, the longer the GBP persists, the bigger, brighter and slower it will be.

That vehicles travel on a curve with excessive speed tends to skid or roll over. This study presents research in video recognition technology of lane and its application in traffic early safety alert system, which improves traffic safety. In our study, we use a monocular camera to acquire the image of the road ahead. Techniques such as gray-scale transformation, filtering, edge detection and curve fitting are used for the recognition of the lane line and curve fitting. Then radius of curvature of the road ahead will be extracted and then the maximum safe speed, which is to be compared with the speed of the vehicle in safety alert system. Experiments show that this method can accurately calculate the radius of the curve ahead and timely give alert message when the vehicle's speed exceeds safe speed. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2014.

Solar activity has various influences on the global environment, in particular on the weather and the likelihood of natural disasters. In particular, it may have serious impacts on Earth such as failure of satellite communication and navigation (GPS), satellite damage, increased radiation exposure to astronauts, geomagnetic storm and aurora, and power plant failures causing more serious disaster. For a precise forecast of larger scale solar flares causing serious disaster, it is important to improve the space weather forecast, which is basically a daily forecast of the solar flare. In our work so far, a machine-learning algorithm called Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used to forecast the space weather. Here, we propose to extend this technology by integrating a Genetic Algorithm (GA) for a more precise forecast and present an evaluation of this approach.

Opportunistic routing (OR) is widely regarded as a promising way to improve the transmission reliability in wireless multi-hop networks. However, additional overheads introduced by OR such as duplicate transmission and collision avoidance overhead degrade the transmission efficiency. In this paper, an analytical model based on open queueing network with markov chains is proposed to evaluate the efficiency. In the analysis, efficiency is expressed by time overhead including the average queue delay and the back off time to transmit. With the knowledge of delivery ratio, the closed form expressions of time overhead could be obtained. In order to validate rationality of the model, three typical ORs were analyzed based on the proposed model and at the same time a large number of simulation studies have been done. We observed that theoretical value of the proposed model coincides basically with the experimental data with the average error less than 5%.

Detecting and monitoring the numerous household appliances in smart home is significant for home energy management, because the large various household appliances are complicated to identify and control. This paper proposes an intelligent unsupervised model for the classification and recognition of household appliances. The key idea in this work is to integrate appliance and activity recognition mechanism for effective management and operation within a domestic location. We first present the corresponding classification list of household appliances w. r. t their respective usage patterns and basic power factors. Then, the communication services among various appliances are established to recognize complex appliances and monitor the variation of their states. Finally, the proposed method is applicable for an inexpensive, unsupervised controlling of electrical appliances in a real-time way. Experimental results show that our method effectively provides a financially viable and easily applicable solution for gathering information and monitoring status of diverse household appliances. In this paper a vision system for autonomous flying agents is considered in the context of industrial inspection tasks performed by unmanned aerial vehicles. A syntactic algorithm of a three-dimensional scene representation is proposed. The algorithm of creating three-dimensional single object representation has been tested by using artificial data. With the fast development of mobile devices and great concern on health surveillance, it is becoming increasingly popular to collect, analyze, and interpret people's health-related data by using intelligent mobile devices in their daily life. Oxygen saturation is an important physiological parameter referring to the concentration of oxygen in the blood, and prolonged low oxygen levels may lead to respiratory or cardiac arrest. Previous oxygen saturation detection methods require infrared light, however most of the off-the-shelf mobile devices lack such infrared light transmitter and receiver modules. This paper presents a novel oxygen saturation estimation method emplying a RGB camera and visible light in most of mobile devices. By applying of traditional optical oxygen saturation estimation model to mobile devices, and analyzing its problem for those devices, this study proposes a new oxygen saturation estimation model on intelligent mobile devices and offers an approach to solve the baseline drift problem in mobile cameras. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and its potentials in many oxygen saturation based researches such as daily-activity based healthcare with mobile devices. © Copyright 2015, Institute of Software, the Chinese Academy of sciences.
