The combination of data-driven approaches and machine learning techniques has changed the design approach for new materials, propelling materials science research into the realm of the fourth paradigm. Researchers in the field of materials science have increasingly focused on utilizing machine learning methods to uncover the underlying nonlinear relationships within material data. However, there is currently limited research in the field of aluminum-silicon alloys regarding the prediction of alloy performance based on the composition-process-structure relationship. Additionally, there is a lack of data sharing in the aluminum-silicon alloy domain. Therefore, this study proposes a methodology. Firstly, an aluminum-silicon alloy dataset is constructed by mining relevant information from materials literature. Then, high-dimensional features in the dataset are subjected to feature selection techniques for dimensionality reduction. Subsequently, a multilayer perceptron model is applied to investigate the relationship between input features such as alloy composition, preparation process, and microstructural parameters, and output features such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation, enabling performance prediction. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, we offer a new approach to integrating the Amazigh language, which is a less-resourced language, into an isolated speech recognition system by exploiting the Kaldi open-source platform. Our designed system is able to recognize the ten first Amazigh digits and ten daily must-used Amazigh isolated words, which present typical syllabic structure and which are considered a good representative sample of the Amazigh language. The designed speech system was implemented using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) with different number of Gaussian distributions. In addition, we evaluated our created system performance by varying the feature extraction methods in order to determine the optimal method for maximum performance. The best-obtained result is 93.96% was obtained with Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) technique. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management.

This study aims to classify brainwave patterns using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in response to various auditory stimuli, specifically Quran recitation, participants' favorite music, and Interstellar's main theme. By analyzing the unique EEG responses elicited by these stimuli, the study explores cognitive and emotional processing differences. Two prominent classifiers, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), were utilized. SVM, combined with Power Spectral Density (PSD) features, achieved the highest accuracy of 95% when distinguishing Quran recitation from rest. CNN, particularly with Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) features, exhibited strong performance in distinguishing between different auditory stimuli, with an average accuracy exceeding 90%. These results highlight the critical role of feature extraction techniques, such as PSD and KDE, in improving classification performance and deepening our understanding of EEG-based emotional and cognitive responses to auditory stimuli. © 2024 IEEE.

To enhance the accuracy of aluminum-silicon alloy microstructure image classification, we propose an aluminum-silicon alloy microstructure image classification model based on an improved residual network, incorporating attention mechanisms and multi-scale thinking. The model is built upon the ResNet18 architecture, utilizing enhanced basic residual blocks to select informative features. Additionally, a multi-scale attention module is incorporated into the network to fuse multi-scale features and further extract effective features. Experimental results on an aluminum-silicon alloy microstructure image classification dataset demonstrate that compared to the best-performing model currently available, the proposed model achieves an increase in classification accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score by 3.17%, 0.74%, 5.53%, and 3.26%, respectively, reaching 94.97%, 96.39%, 93.97%, and 95.17%. These results indicate that the proposed model exhibits strong capabilities in classifying aluminum-silicon alloy microstructure images and can facilitate further research on the properties of aluminum-silicon alloys. © 2023 IEEE.

Due to the direct contact between electrode and scalp, dry EEG electrodes are exposed to increased mechanical wear compared to conventional gel-based electrodes. However, state-of-the-art commercial cap systems commonly use permanently fixated electrodes which can lead to downtime of the EEG cap during professional repair and replacement as well as reduced overall lifetime. An easily replaceable EEG electrode would furthermore improve hygiene, especially for newborn and infant applications. We propose a novel replaceable electrode system, consisting of an electrode holder, a snap top, a contact ring fixated inside the electrode holder, and a replaceable electrode. The production process consists of 3D printing, silicone molding, resin casting, and electroless plating. The replaceable electrode system is integrated into a multichannel EEG cap system. A verification study is conducted with 30 volunteers. The operators experienced that the new electrode holder eases adjustment of the electrode to have proper contact with the scalp. During the study, defective electrodes can be replaced without a soldering process. Furthermore, all electrodes stayed in the holder and did not fall off the cap for the whole session. In conclusion, the novel replaceable electrode system is suitable for EEG measurements. © 2022 The Author(s), published by De Gruyter.

Deaf persons usually relies on sign language to communicate with other human beings. This language is expressed through manual articulations in combination with non-manual elements, being a full rights language, with its own grammar and lexicon. Still, it is closely linked to the culture, customs and norms of the community that uses it, so that there is a sign language for the deaf community in Romania. Though there are many attempts to develop assistive technologies, most of them are for American Sign Language. The article presents an Android application to translate a message from Romanian language to Romanian sign language through videos in which these words are mimicked. The application was successfully used in an orphanage by hearing children to learn the sign language and to communicate with a deaf peer. © 2022 IEEE.

A new configuration is proposed for filters with parallel coupling paths between the source and load in this paper. The proposed fourth-order waveguide bandpass filter (BPF) with two parallel coupled paths is formally designed through this structure. The filter is working at 6.5 GHz and with 300 MHz bandwidth. Due to the two parallel coupling paths, a pair of transmission zeros (TZs) are generated out of passband. Compared with previous waveguide filters, the coupling paths are connected to the source and load in different sides of input/output waveguide. In this way, the waveguide cavity of the resonator can be increased and the insertion loss of the filter can be greatly reduced. The effectiveness of the fourth-order waveguide bandpass filter is verified by simulation results. © 2023 IEEE.

The work reported in this paper enables to upload and activation of new programs to KUKA industrial robots during active operation, which would not be possible normally. By doing this it is possible to program those robots offline resulting in increased flexibility for modern manufacturing. The programs could be placed on work pieces to form a work-piece-driven production. Comparable projects increased the capabilities of robot programming by avoiding the KUKA Robot Language using high-level programming languages. Those approaches have proven themselves in the field of research. Nevertheless, this work tries a completely different approach by enabling offline programming and switching between programs while maintaining KRL the most used robot programming language for KUKA robots. © 2023 IEEE.

As the installed capacity of wind turbines increases, the overall inertia of the system decreases, which reduces the ability of the system to support the frequency. Due to the tendency to operate in a maximum power tracking state and the lack of an active power reserve, doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), a type of the current popular wind turbine, are unable to efficiently utilize the rotor kinetic energy to engage in frequency regulation in the face of grid frequency variations. To address this issue, virtual inertia control (VIC) is introduced to release the kinetic energy of the DFIG provide dynamic frequency support to the grid. In addition, a properly designed control strategy for the battery energy storage system (BESS) can store the excess energy of the DFIG system and release it as needed to assist frequency regulation. In this paper, we propose a coordinated control strategy for virtual inertial regulation with BESS for DFIG frequency support. We design a charge-discharge switching control strategy for the BESS. Time-domain simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in suppressing frequency disturbances. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a case study related to emotion recognition based on human thermal image processing. Three states are considered for human faces: normal, sad, and happy. The thermal images are pre-processed for important feature selection and extraction by using the random forest (RF) classifier. All and selected features set is used as input to a feedforward backpropagation neural network (FFBPN), with binary outputs. The input images are organized in pairs, i.e., normal with sad and normal with happy. The preliminary results show particularly good classification accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.
