Artificial intelligence to evaluate the impact of urban green and blue spaces on chlorophyll-a concentrations

Urbanization is accelerating rapidly, highlighting the critical role of aligning with sustainable development goals, urban green and blue spaces (UGS and UBS). These spaces play a crucial role in enhancing the health and well-being of city residents in terms of ecology. Acknowledging the importance of urban ecology, this study utilizes Sentinel-2A data and support vector machine classification, aimed to identify UGS and UBS. To examine the connections between UGS and UBS, specific indices, spectral bands, and textures were calculated. Additionally, the concentration of chlorophyll, a vital indicator of ecological health, was assessed using three indices. Structural equation modeling was employed to elucidate the relationship between UGS and UBS and their impact on chlorophyll concentration for the years 2017 and 2023. In the 2017 model, UGS exhibited a positive path coefficient (0.25) with chlorophyll-a, indicating that an increase in UGS is associated with an increase in chlorophyll levels. Conversely, in 2023, the path coefficient turned negative (− 0.83), presenting a stark contrast to the 2017 model. This shift suggests potential environmental or urban development changes, such as alterations in the quality or type of urban green spaces, potentially including more non-native or ornamental plants that contribute less to overall chlorophyll levels. UGS can be subjected to pollution, soil compaction, and other stressors that reduce plant health. Similarly, the UBS showed an increase in its path coefficient from − 0.99 in 2017 to − 1.8 in 2023, suggesting improvements such as cleaner water or urban planning strategies aimed at reducing water pollution. The consistent negative relationship across both years suggests that urban water bodies are not contributing to Chl levels due to complex interactions of water bodies with their urban surroundings. Theoretical studies of the propulsion of a projectile in the barrel for a gun propellant system can be realized by numerically solving a system of equations that describe the phenomena occurring in the barrel space behind the projectile during firing. The accuracy of the solution of the mathematical model of the shot depends on reliable input data including the mass-geometric characteristics of the elements of the gun propellant system and the energy-ballistic characteristics of the gun propellant used. The present article addresses the problem of modelling the phenomenon of firing in a black-powder cannon from the 17th century. The acquisition of real input data, including the mass-geometric characteristics of the elements of the black-powder cannon is possible based on historical descriptions and preserved weapons in museums. In relation to the black powder used in 17th century artillery, although we have knowledge of the content of its components, there is no literature information on the value of its energy-ballistic characteristics. The purpose of this article is to determine the form of the burning rate law for the black powder used in Polish artillery in the 17th century and to compare the results obtained with available data on contemporary black powder. The procedure used was the so-called inverse solution of the gun interior ballistic model, in which, on the basis of the identified tactical-technical characteristics of the known black-powder cannon, the values of the force and covolume obtained by thermochemical calculations, and the assumed shape of the black powder grains, the values of the coefficient and exponent of the burning rate law were determined. The study presents the existing challenges in opal mining in the Delanta area (mining methods, tools, market system, and environmental impact) and provides possible recommendations to overcome these challenges. Literature review, data collection, field survey, and data analysis were used as methods for this study. Environmental impact assessment also applied in the study area. Based on the study, the opal mining system in the Delanta area is performed in traditional ways and this method is not benefiting the local miners as well as the country. In the area, due to roof collapse of mining sites, three to eight artesian small-scale miners are dying each year. Opal quality deterioration (wastes locally called Ajara) because of cracking is the other main challenge in the study area. Moreover, environmental problems such as deforestation, concealed underground channels, landslides, the loss of numerous species’ habitats, annihilation of flora, land degradation, soil erosion and pollution, water pollution, air pollution, downstream sedimentation, and the covering of topsoil on agricultural land, which affects the farming system are the main findings of this study. In the study area, only 3% of the opal is processed, while 97% is rough, and this results in loss of income for the country. Finally, the study indicated the possible solutions in opal exploration and mining methods, as well as market system for the safe and sustainable extraction of Delanta opal resources. The study recommended for future work to design a safe mining method, a ventilation shaft, develop a smartphone app for quality grading and branding for selling, developing a low-cost opal cutting and polishing machine for value addition, and establishing training centers. In addition, the sector in the area also needs solar systems planting for lighting of mining sites, design and development of waste soil removal technology/conveyors and hammers for safe mining, sustainable development and management.

Sugar cane is one of the largest agricultural crops, and sugar cane bagasse (SCB), a major waste from sugar cane processing, is an abundant and inexpensive source of fermentable sugars for producing diverse platform chemicals. The present study evaluates the technoeconomic viability of L (+) lactic acid (LA) production from SCB with different stand-alone process scenarios modeled using the pinch method. It critically evaluates various cost-contributing factors when a sugar-rich hydrolysate is obtained via two different pretreatment methods: dilute acid and alkali. The cost-benefit of LA purification by conventional distillation (CD) is further compared to reactive distillation (RD). The pinch method cuts the LA manufacturing costs by 10-11%. Alkali pretreatment combined with RD involves a lower capital investment and utility consumption than the CD counterpart and slightly less LA manufacturing cost. However, LA production via dilute acid pretreatment and purification by RD emerges as the most profitable scenario due to capital investment, utility demand, and chemical consumption savings. This scenario offers the minimum LA selling price of 2.3 US$/kg for an 8.5% discount factor and a 5 year payback period. However, for a 20 year plant life and 2.5 US$/kg factory-gate LA selling price, the internal rate of return was 31% and the payback period was 4.4 years for an 8.5% discount factor. © 2025 The Authors. This study uses Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote sensing (RS) to identify suitable dam sites. In the GIS domain, determinant elements like geology, land use, slope, precipitation, and soil texture were examined. The impact of each element on the potential of a dam site led to a reclassification and the assignment of appropriate fuzzy membership values. Based on their closeness to neighboring settlements, dams, and flow accumulation, eight sites were chosen. Based on flow accumulation, elevation, precipitation, slope, stream order, and maximum storage capacity, the dam locations that were chosen were computed. Lower Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) values suggested that there were no redundant variables, and the analysis found that each independent variable had a significant robust probability at a 0.05 level. Despite conflicting correlations hypothesized because of non-stationarity or heteroskedasticity, the Koenker's studentized Bruesch-Pagan statistic was determined to be statistically inconsequential. Also statistically insignificant was the Jarque-Bera statistic, which shows a Gaussian distribution of residuals. For land use, precipitation, and fuzzified geology, the corresponding corrected coefficient of correlation (R2) values were 0.58, 0.56, and 0.17. The potential of the chosen dam sites was found to be entirely explained by land use and geology, with rainfall, soil texture, stream order, flow accumulation, slope, and elevation coming in second and third. Validated using spatial autocorrelation and Global Moran's I, the model's Gaussian pattern validates its effectiveness in identifying potential dam sites at regional and continental levels when combined with exploratory regression. © 2024 The Author(s)

Laboratory experiment on the impact of wind on water turbulence in shallow areas

A series of laboratory experiments focused on the wind impact on the vertical turbulence structure in shallow water has been carried out. The turbulence characteristics in the mid-lower water column under relatively strong wave conditions are investigated. For different experimental conditions (i.e., waves only, wind only, combinations of wind and waves) in a wind-wave flume, the effects of wind and waves were investigated in detail by decomposing the total energy into different terms (i.e., wind-driven currents, wind waves, wind-induced turbulence). The results show that shallow water waves play a major role in transferring energy by non-zero wave-induced Reynolds stress (ũw˜‾), turbulent diffusion (u′w′‾). The superimposed wind can further modify the energy transference due to its impact on wave asymmetry and skewness as well as through homogenizing the time-average velocity profiles. Subsequently, the impact of wind on turbulence structure was explored in detail. The most important finding is that the wind can directly influence water turbulent diffusion (u′w′‾) along with wave-induced turbulence. The vertical turbulence intensity (σw) is more sensitive to wind than the horizontal turbulence intensity (σu). Furthermore, the major way that wind affects water turbulence is by introducing nonlinear wind and wave interactions, which exhibit a maximum effect (∼60 % compared to the respective effect of wind and wave) at the edge of the bottom boundary layer. This study demonstrates that the wind can transfer momentum downward to mid-lower water columns even under strong waves in shallow waters, which differs from that in deep water systems. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Application of multiple regression in the analysis of convergence of roadways concerning selected geological factors

The convergence of an excavation, i.e., the reduction of its lateral dimensions, is the main reason for the loss of its functionality. This phenomenon occurs because of the movement of the roof, sidewall and floor rocks into an excavation. This convergence can be witnessed not only in all underground mines around the world but also in transport tunnels. The ability to maintain the necessary excavation dimensions is influenced by several geological, mining, and technical factors. In this paper, three factors were analysed: the presence of a fault in the length of the roadway, the presence of waterlogged rock, and the duration of excavation maintenance. For this purpose, rock mass movements were measured in three roadways in hard coal mines. The sites where the study was conducted were selected so the impact of the aforementioned factors would be unambiguous when considering the measurement results. Occupational risk assessment based on employees’ knowledge and awareness of hazards in mining
