Personality traits are crucial factors that influence individual behavior and responses. In this study, we introduced both personality traits and experience traits in an analysis of the characteristics of citizens using social media posts from different cities. The personality traits referenced some facets of the "Big Five Model" of personality. The experience traits were introduced considering the close relationship between personality traits and behavior. Specifically, we labeled social media posts from each city with two labels, representing a personality trait and an experience trait. We then examined how these traits reflect the tendencies in citizens’ behavior. The personality traits defined in this study were "Altruism," "Artistic Interest," "Adventurousness," "Gregariousness," and "Activity." We assigned the labels manually and fine-tuned large language models to assign the personality trait labels to cities automatically. Finally, we analyzed the differences in personality trait trends between cities. Our experimental results showed that the F1 scores of the prediction models for both personality traits and experience traits exceeded 0.8. The analysis of social media posts using the trained models demonstrated that the citizens of a certain city had significantly higher scores for the personality traits "Artistic Interest" and "Gregariousness" than those from other cities, which was consistent with the results of previous questionnaire-based studies. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Carotid arteries on dental panoramic radiographs may show areas of calcification, which is a sign of vascular disease. The sudden onset of vascular disease can be prevented by a dentist detecting these areas at a dental clinic and prompting the patient to visit a physician. A method based on semantic segmentation was proposed as an automatic detection method for this purpose. However, because of the small number of available data, the detection accuracy for calcification regions was insufficient. In this study, we propose a method that applies a type of adversarial training called latent space virtual adversarial training (LVAT). We also describe a method to improve the pre-training of a variational autoencoder, which is essential in LVAT, using healthy subjects’ data. We expect this method to improve detection accuracy, even with a limited number of data. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method by applying it to actual data. © 2024 IEEE.

We can find areas of calcification in Carotid arteries on dental panoramic radiographs, which may be a sign of vascular disease. It is hoped that detection of these areas can prevent the sudden onset of vascular disorders by prompting patients to consult a physician. For this purpose, we propose an automatic detection method based on a model combining semantic segmentation and convolutional neural networks. This method uses Nash-MTL, a multi-task learning method, to solve the tradeoff between segmentation and identification tasks with different properties. In this method, the parameters for adjusting the gradient vector are obtained through an optimization method. However, in the case of two tasks, as in this problem, the exact solution can be obtained, computational complexity can be reduced without compromising accuracy. Furthermore, the computational complexity can be further reduced by simplifying the solution. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by applying it to actual data. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper examines the effect of explicitly presenting types of questions to students in an online learning environment. In our setting, people are shown online videos for lectures and then asked to raise questions. We compare the collected questions with those collected in the same situation but without presenting types of questions. We find that presenting types of questions improves the quality of questions, but does not increase the number of questions raised. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Purpose:This study aimed to examine the effect of radiation esophagitis(RE)and the dynamics of RE on subse-quent survival in non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC)patients who underwent *** Design:Patients with NSCLC treated with fractionated thoracic radiotherapy enrolled in prospective trials were *** was graded prospectively according to Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events(CTCAE)v3.0 per protocol requirement weekly during-RT and 1 month after *** study applied conditional survival assessment which has advantage over traditional survival analysis as it assesses the survival from the event instead of from the baseline.P-value less than 0.05 was considered to be *** primary endpoint is overall ***:A total of 177 patients were eligible,with a median follow-up of 5 *** presence of RE,the maximum RE grade,the evolution of RE and the onset timing of RE events were all correlated with subsequent *** all conditional time points,patients first presented with RE grade1(initial RE1)had significant inferior subsequent survival(multivariable HRs median:1.63,all P-values<0.05);meanwhile those with RE progressed had significant inferior subsequent survival than those never develop RE(multivariable HRs median:2.08,all P-values<0.05).Multivariable Cox proportional-hazards analysis showed significantly higher C-indexes for models with inclusion of RE events than those without(all P-values<0.05).Conclusion:This study comprehensively evaluated the impact of RE with conditional survival assessment and demonstrated that RE is associated with inferior survival in NSCLC patients treated with RT.

Identification of patient characteristics associated with survival benefit from metformin treatment in patients with stage I non–small cell lung cancer

Background: Non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) continues to be a major cause of cancer deaths. Previous investigation has suggested that metformin use can contribute to improved outcomes in NSCLC patients. However, this association is not uniform in all analyzed cohorts, implying that patient characteristics might lead to disparate results. Identification of patient characteristics that affect the association of metformin use with clinical benefit might clarify the drug's effect on lung cancer outcomes and lead to more rational design of clinical trials of metformin's utility as an intervention. In this study, we examined the association of metformin use with long-term mortality benefit in patients with NSCLC and the possible modulation of this benefit by body mass index (BMI) and smoking status, controlling for other clinical covariates. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study in which we analyzed data from the Veterans Affairs (VA) Tumor Registry in the United States. Data from all patients with stage I NSCLC from 2000 to 2016 were extracted from a national database, the Corporate Data Warehouse that captures data from all patients, primarily male, who underwent treatment through the VA health system in the United States. Metformin use was measured according to metformin prescriptions dispensed to patients in the VA health system. The association of metformin use with overall survival (OS) after diagnosis of stage I NSCLC was examined. Patients were further stratified according to BMI and smoking status (previous vs current) to examine the association of metformin use with OS across these strata. Results: Metformin use was associated with improved survival in patients with stage I NSCLC (average hazard ratio, 0.82;P < .001). An interaction between the effect of metformin use and BMI on OS was observed (χ² = 3268.42;P < .001) with a greater benefit of metformin use observed in patients as BMI increased. Extreme drought events may become more frequent with climate change. Understanding the impact of extreme drought on grassland ecosystems is therefore crucial for the long-term sustainability of ecosystems. Here, we identified extreme drought events in the Inner Mongolia grasslands of China using long-term standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) data, and evaluated drought resistance of the vegetation under extreme drought based on net primary production (NPP). The main conclusions were as follows: (1) The frequency and area of extreme drought in 2000–2011 were significantly higher than those in 2012–2020, and the Xilingol League region showed the highest frequency of extreme drought events. (2) Under one-year extreme drought, with the increase of temperature and precipitation, resistance decreased first and then increased. (3) Under two-year continuous extreme drought, both meadow and steppe types showed different degrees of decline in resistance in the later year, while temperate desert and temperate steppe desert showed a decline in resistance in 2009–2010 and an increase in resistance in 2010–2011. (4) Under discontinuous extreme drought, the resistance of all grassland types showed a fluctuating, but an overall increasing trend. Based on these findings. Therefore, we think that the discontinuous extreme drought may be conducive to the improvement of resistance. This is crucial for assessing the impact of climate change on grassland vegetation growth and carbon cycling in Inner Mongolia. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
