Measurements of four-lepton production at the Z resonance in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 and 8 TeV with ATLAS

Modern machine learning techniques have encouraged interest in the development of vehicle health monitoring systems that ensure secure and reliable operations of rail vehicles. In an earlier study, an energy-efficient data acquisition method was investigated to develop a monitoring system for railway applications using modern machine learning techniques, more specific classification algorithms. A suitable classifier was proposed for railway monitoring based on relative weighted performance metrics. To improve the performance of the existing approach, a rule-based learning method using statistical analysis has been proposed in this paper to select a unique classifier for the same application. This selected algorithm works more efficiently and improves the overall performance of the railway monitoring systems. This study has been conducted using six classifiers, namely REPTree, J48, Decision Stump, IBK, PART and OneR, with twenty-five datasets. The Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA) learning tool has been used in this study to develop the prediction models. © 2010 IEEE.

The emergence of multi-agent systems in the past years has led to a necessity of developing new methodologies to assist in the requirements and architectural analysis, and in the design phases of such a system, and as a consequence, several Agent Oriented Software engineering (AOSE) methodologies have been proposed. In this paper, we analyze the GAIA methodology and some proposed extensions, and use this methodology to design an abstract generic system model for an open multi-robot application. We then derive two distinct specific models for two different applications - the first with the intention of using intelligent wheelchairs in a hospital environment, and the second targeting the use of teams of autonomous aircrafts. The successful adoption of the generic model in the design stages of the two distinct systems not only validates the proposed model and shows that it can be used in open multi-agent systems, but also shows it is also flexible enough to be used in systems as diverse as these. By adapting the GAIA methodology for the design of open systems, this work enables designers to model open systems in a faster and simpler form, decreasing the time needed to complete several tasks, while maintaining a high-level overview of the system.

The paper overviews a range of novel techniques recently developed for efficient detection and further analysis of data in visual databases.A particular attention is paid to the issue that,until recently,has been considered too complex and ill-defined,*** of unspecified similar fragments in images of unpredictable and unknown *** discuss the following techniques that can be instrumental in solving this problem:(1) detection of image fragments related by affine transformations;(2) detection of image fragments related topological mappings;(3) accurate shape estimate of detected similar image fragments and(4) automatic classification of fragments into classes of objects of similar visual *** paper presents the theoretical background and the implementation results. Additionally,a demo of a real-time system for detection of fragments similar to database images in a video stream will be presented during the conference.

Devices that offer positioning and route guidance depend on updated digital maps for correct functioning. Updating digital maps is a highly expensive and complex process so it became necessary to develop new ways to detect changes to the road network. Using GPS points gathered by users during their journeys, it is possible to compare the real road network with the digital map. This paper describes a methodology to detect incongruences of different road geometry, alteration of junction position, prohibited manoeuvres and traffic direction as well as a sample of the results obtained. ©2010 IEEE.

This Letter presents measurements of the polarization of the top quark in top-antitop quark pair events, using 4.7 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at s=7 TeV. Final states containing one or two isolated leptons (electrons or muons) and jets are considered. Two measurements of αℓP, the product of the leptonic spin-analyzing power and the top quark polarization, are performed assuming that the polarization is introduced by either a CP conserving or a maximally CP violating production process. The measurements obtained, αℓPCPC=−0.035±0.014(stat)±0.037(syst) and αℓPCPV=0.020±0.016(stat)−0.017+0.013(syst), are in good agreement with the standard model prediction of negligible top quark polarization.

Considering emerging demands for auction based efficient resource allocations, the ability to complete an auction within a fine-grained time period without loss of allocation efficiency is in strong demand. Recently, an algorithm has been proposed to obtain near-optimal solutions for winner determination problem on combinatorial auctions within a very short computation time. However, it is demanded to analyse and clarify the main factor of such an excellent performance of the algorithm. Also, for practical use, there are demands to clarify the actual implementation-level performance of the algorithm compared to major commercial-level generic problem solvers. In this paper, we show an analysis about performance issues of biased parallel greedy updating approach in various experimental settings. Furthermore, we show that the algorithm has a certain advantage to solve a kind of large-size high-complexity problems when it is compared to a latest commercial-level implementation of generic LP solver through various experiments. © 2010 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Measurements of the variation of inclusive jet suppression as a function of relative azimuthal angle, Δϕ, with respect to the elliptic event plane provide insight into the path-length dependence of jet quenching. ATLAS has measured the Δϕ dependence of jet yields in 0.14 nb−1 of sNN=2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC for jet transverse momenta pT>45 GeV in different collision centrality bins using an underlying event subtraction procedure that accounts for elliptic flow. The variation of the jet yield with Δϕ was characterized by the parameter, v2jet, and the ratio of out-of-plane (Δϕ∼π/2) to in-plane (Δϕ∼0) yields. Nonzero v2jet values were measured in all centrality bins for pT<160 GeV. The jet yields are observed to vary by as much as 20% between in-plane and out-of-plane directions.

This paper presents a case study of an existing web application of inventory management for electronics laboratories, accounting for usability principles and best practices for user interface design. The iLab project efficiently manages the inventory, requests, users (borrowings, purchases, etc.) and associated historic and workflow information. This enables users to queue requests and track their statuses. Usability is critical for for the success of such application. A web based interface is to be designed using usability principles, making sure all end-users use the application in an intuitive and effective way. To achieve these goals the study consisted on four phases: plan, analyze, design and, test and refine. After this study it has been concluded that with this methodology developers are able to create more user-friendly and efficient applications.

Streamlining data acquisition in mobile health care in order to increase accuracy and efficiency can only benefit the patient. The company FERK-Systems has been providing health care information systems for various German medical services for many years. The design and development of a compatible front-end system for handwriting recognition, particularly for use in ambulances was clearly needed. While handwriting recognition has been a classical topic of computer science for many years, many problems still need to be solved. In this paper, we report on the study and resulting improvements achieved by the adaptation of an existing handwriting algorithm, based on experiences made during medical rescue missions. By improving accuracy and error correction the performance of an available handwriting recognition algorithm was increased. However, the end user studies showed that the virtual keyboard is still the overall preferred method compared to handwriting, especially among participants with a computer usage of more than 30 hours a week. This is possibly due to the wide availability of the QUERTY/QUERTZ keyboard.
