This report summarizes the proceedings of the second workshop of the 'Minimum Information for Biological and Biomedical Investigations' (MIBBI) consortium held on Dec 1-2, 2010 in Rüdesheim, Germany through the sponsorship of the Beilstein-Institute. MIBBI is an umbrella organization uniting communities developing Minimum Information (MI) checklists to standardize the description of data sets, the workflows by which they were generated and the scientific context for the work. This workshop brought together representatives of more than twenty communities to present the status of their MI checklists and plans for future development. Shared challenges and solutions were identified and the role of MIBBI in MI checklist development was discussed. The meeting featured some thirty presentations, wide-ranging discussions and breakout groups. The top outcomes of the two-day workshop as defined by the participants were: 1) the chance to share best practices and to identify areas of synergy; 2) defining a series of tasks for updating the MIBBI Portal; 3) reemphasizing the need to maintain independent MI checklists for various communities while leveraging common terms and workflow elements contained in multiple checklists; and 4) revision of the concept of the MIBBI Foundry to focus on the creation of a core set of MIBBI modules intended for reuse by individual MI checklist projects while maintaining the integrity of each MI project. In this paper, we introduce the approach of adaptive neuro-fuzzy sliding mode control to the vector control of induction motor, in order to overcome the chattering problem. After determining the decoupled model of the motor, a set of simple surfaces associated with a smooth control function with a threshold have been synthesized. However, the magnitude of this control function depends closely on the upper bound of uncertainties, which include parameter variations and external disturbances, and this generates chattering. Therefore, a fuzzy sliding mode controller is investigated to solve this difficulty, in which a simple fuzzy inference mechanism is used to reduce the chattering via simple adjustments. In order to optimize the control performances and ensure a significant reduction of chattering compared with other techniques, we proposed the use of adaptive predictive neural control approach to regulate the speed of the motor. The neural control algorithm is provided with the predicted system output which is the speed variable via a recursive online identification of the overall system which is based on a static feed forward linear network with one hidden layer. The predicted data are passed to a numerical optimization algorithm which attempts to minimize a quadratic rformance criterion to compute the suitable control signal. Copyright © 2008 SoftMotor Ltd.

Performance evaluation of embedded software is essential in an early development phase so as to ensure that the software will run on the embedded device's limited computing resources. Prevailing approaches either require the deployment of the software on the embedded target, which can be tedious and may be impossible in an early development phase, or rely on simulation, which can be very slow. In this paper, we introduce a customizable cross-profiling framework for embedded Java processors, including processors featuring a method cache. The developer profiles the embedded software in the host environment, completely decoupled from the target system, on any standard Java Virtual Machine, but the generated profiles represent the execution time metric of the target system. Our cross-profiling framework is based on bytecode instrumentation. We identify several pointcuts in the execution of bytecode that need to be instrumented in order to estimate the CPU cycle consumption on the target system. An evaluation using the JOP embedded Java processor as target confirms that our approach reconciles high profile accuracy with moderate overhead. Our cross-profiling framework also enables the rapid evaluation of the performance impact of possible optimizations, such as different caching strategies. Copyright 2008 ACM.

One way to see the Semantic Web is to think of it as a set of all-knowing technologies that respond to whatever the user asks. The other view is that it is a set of standards and tools that help build better web applications. Since the latter is probably more realistic at the moment, it means that a lot of software has to be developed before we start actually seeing the Semantic Web in widespread use. Many developers would be needed for the task and unless we "win their hearts and minds", they are likely to obstruct rather than support the Semantic Web idea. And from the average developer's point of view, there is not much to like on today's RDF query languages, especially when compared with relational algebra and SQL. Besides the fact that they are built on different principles, none of the languages we are aware of has a property that has served SQL so well - they are not closed. © 2008 IEEE.

Thailand's IT2002 framework calls for the creation of knowledge economy under the equality of all aspects in society as demanded by the constitution. In so doing, it is imperative that the digital divide must be bridged. This necessitates the formulation of the "Digital Divide Strategic Framework" which is in-line with the National Economic Development Plan 2007-2011 and supports the implementation of the Quality of Life for Disabilities Act 2007. The Digital Divide Strategic Framework will address mainly the issue of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) accessibility for the poor, the disabled and the senior citizens. This strategic plan is designed with implementation in mind in which a total of 16 projects will be implemented over a period of three years from *** 2008 ACM.

Significant efforts and studies were recently reported for enabling active safety, traffic management, and commercial applications in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANET), since these applications are the drivers of the recent surge in VANET research and development. However, very few research efforts considered analyzing the Quality of Service (QoS) metrics that will be available to these applications in VANET. Furthermore, although there are many proposed solutions for routing in VANET, it is still unclear as to what specific characteristics VANET routing protocols should possess, since none of the proposed solutions achieves optimum performance in both urban and highway, as well as sparse and dense environment. To shed light on these issues, in this paper we analyze some of the most important QoS metrics in VANET. Namely, we determine the upper performance bound for connection duration, packet delivery ratio, end -to -end delay, and jitter for unicast communication in typical highway and urban VANET environments. According to our results, delay and jitter in VANET would be adequate for most of the envisioned unicast -based applications, whereas the packet delivery ratio and connection duration might not meet the requirements for most unicast -based applications. © 2008 IEEE.

Perfectly framed in the Serious Games thematic emerged Quarto!, a game created in 1991 that in not much more than a decade became the most awarded one of all time. Quarto! possesses eccentric features like contemplating common pieces for both players and each one choosing the piece the opponent must play. The authors' vision consisted in modeling Quarto! in a computerized form, both logic and graphical user interface, thus providing a solid, flexible and interactive support for logical and strategic reasoning learning. Five progressive AI complexity levels were implemented, in order to accommodate several human player experience ranks. In addition to the original line and square alignments, structures with L and T designs were introduced, that in concurrence with their symmetry properties enhanced combinatory possibilities and complexified the game. Board assessment is particularly complex, due to the nature of the game. A key project contribution is the introduction of the concept of Quarticity as a specific heuristic game situation assessment. Experiments conducted with end-users revealed that the usage of the described system enhanced and accelerated both the rule set learning rate and generic strategic reasoning, when compared to a conventional board game experience. © 2008 IADIS.

Cervical cancer (CxCa) is currently the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, for women between 20 and 39 years old. As infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV) is considered as the central risk factor for CxCa, current research focuses on the role of specific genetic and environmental factors in determining HPV persistence and subsequent progression of the disease. ASSIST is an EU-funded research project that aims to facilitate the design and execution of genetic association studies on CxCa in a systematic way by adopting inference and semantic technologies. Toward this goal, ASSIST provides the means for seamless integration and virtual unification of distributed and heterogeneous CxCa data repositories, and the underlying mechanisms to undertake the entire process of expressing and statistically evaluating medical hypotheses based on the collected data in order to generate medically important associations. The ultimate goal for ASSIST is to foster the biomedical research community by providing an open, integrated and collaborative framework to facilitate genetic association studies. © 2008 Organizing Committee of MIE 2008. In this paper, we present the web-based resource sharing system KnownStyleNoLife, which allows users explicitly annotate fashion-related images. KnownStyleNoLife harnesses human power and collects image metadata such as object locations, object labels, image rating and semantic relationships among images. Metadata of that type are invaluable as it is difficult for ordinary computer software to extract equivalent metadata from the Web. Acquiring image metadata such as the type and location of objects in images requires a computer to use machine learning techniques, needing training with sample images and Web search techniques, with the outcome that only limited image metadata are extracted. Furthermore, the semantic image relationship metadata is based upon people's image perception, hence user feedback is required to acquire it. Known-StyleNoLife provides a social value to users in return for their explicit annotations. It is a novel approach to harness human power to acquire relevant image metadata. © 2008 IEEE.
