This paper investigates signal and system representations in special rational orthogonal bases of the Hardy space H 2 . These bases are derived from the Blaschke-group associated to the hyperbolic group SH(n) of matrices. Using the concept of the unitary group representations over H 2 , and the voice-transform, specific hyperbolic wavelet constructions - Blaschke-wavelets and the associated Blaschke-Fourier transform are constructed. State space representations of systems over hyperbolic groups are discussed, too, with the purpose to explore the perspectives of elaborating a unified system theory upon this conceptual base.

In live-cell fluorescence microscopy imaging, quantitative analysis of biological image data generally involves the detection of many subresolution objects, appearing as diffraction-limited spots. Due to acquisition limitations, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be extremely low, making automated spot detection a very challenging task. In this paper, we quantitatively evaluate the performance of the most frequently used supervised and unsupervised detection methods for this purpose. Experiments on synthetic images of three different types, for which ground truth was available, as well as on real image data sets acquired for two different biological studies, for which we obtained expert manual annotations for comparison, revealed that for very low SNRs (ap2), the supervised (machine learning) methods perform best overall, closely followed by the detectors based on the so-called h-dome transform from mathematical morphology and the multiscale variance-stabilizing transform, which do not require a learning stage. At high SNRs (>5), the difference in performance of all considered detectors becomes negligible.

In New Zealand and Australia, the BRACElet project has been investigating students' acquisition of programming skills in introductory programming courses. The project has explored students' skills in basic syntax, tracing code, understanding code, and writing code, seeking to establish the relationships between these skills. This ITiCSE working group report presents the most recent step in the BRACElet project, which includes replication of earlier analysis using a far broader pool of naturally occurring data, refinement of the SOLO taxonomy in code-explaining questions, extension of the taxonomy to code-writing questions, extension of some earlier studies on students' 'doodling' while answering exam questions, and exploration of a further theoretical basis for work that until now has been primarily empirical.

The Italica Project is the implementation of an electronic health record system at the Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires. The present work shows the implementation of a medical signal grid repository module and its integration to the Italica Project. We also describe the architecture of that module and explain the design decisions taken for its construction. The integration to the preexisting system is also presented, together with the difficulties that arose from the insertion of a data grid in an environment not used to this technology. Several issues about the security and reliability of the medical data are treated as well. In this paper we also discuss the use of the grid repository as a starting point for the development of distributed processing applications.

This work is motivated by the need to develop decentralized P2P approaches to support learning and teaching activity in virtual universities. In this paper, we present the implementation of the JXTA-based e-learning P2P system. We also show the design and implementation of a SmartBox environment that will be used for stimulating the learners to increase the learning efficiency. The proposed e-learning P2P system is a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learnerspsila activity. We evaluate the proposed system by experimental results and show that proposed system has a good performance. In the future, we aim to use it in real virtual campus environments.

Service-oriented architecture can be considered as a philosophy or paradigm in organizing and utilizing services and capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains. Virtualization provides abstraction and isolation of lower level functionalities, enabling portability of higher level functions and sharing of physical resources. However, dynamics, environmental conditions and increasing complexity / heterogeneity of underlying resources call for adaptive resource handling. In this view an intelligent distributed architecture that enables dynamic user management and control on network-wide resource sharing by using the service oriented architecture concept is presented. Additionally, the proposed architecture supports trading of resources that will enable the transformation of traditional business models.
