BACKGROUND:Epidemiological evidence on short-term association between ambient carbon monoxide (CO) and mortality is inconclusive and limited to single cities, regions, or countries. Generalisation of results from previous studies is hindered by potential publication bias and different modelling approaches. We therefore assessed the association between short-term exposure to ambient CO and daily mortality in a multicity, multicountry setting. METHODS:We collected daily data on air pollution, meteorology, and total mortality from 337 cities in 18 countries or regions, covering various periods from 1979 to 2016. All included cities had at least 2 years of both CO and mortality data. We estimated city-specific associations using confounder-adjusted generalised additive models with a quasi-Poisson distribution, and then pooled the estimates, accounting for their statistical uncertainty, using a random-effects multilevel meta-analytical model. We also assessed the overall shape of the exposure-response curve and evaluated the possibility of a threshold below which health is not affected. FINDINGS:Overall, a 1 mg/m increase in the average CO concentration of the previous day was associated with a 0·91% (95% CI 0·32-1·50) increase in daily total mortality. The pooled exposure-response curve showed a continuously elevated mortality risk with increasing CO concentrations, suggesting no threshold. The exposure-response curve was steeper at daily CO levels lower than 1 mg/m, indicating greater risk of mortality per increment in CO exposure, and persisted at daily concentrations as low as 0·6 mg/m or less. The association remained similar after adjustment for ozone but was attenuated after adjustment for particulate matter or sulphur dioxide, or even reduced to null after adjustment for nitrogen dioxide. INTERPRETATION:This international study is by far the largest epidemiological investigation on short-term CO-related mortality. We found significant associations between ambient

Meta Search Engines are finding tools developed for improving the search performance by submitting user queries to multiple search engines and combining the different search results in a unified ranked list. The effectiveness of a Meta search engine is closely related to the result merging strategy it employs. But nowadays, the main issue in the conception of such systems is the merging strategy of the returned results. With only the user query as relevant information about his information needs, it's hard to use it to find the best ranking of the merged results. We present in this paper a new strategy of merging multiple search engine results using only the user query as a relevance criterion. We propose a new score function combining the similarity between user query and retrieved results and the users' satisfaction toward used search engines. The proposed Meta search engine can be used for merging search results of any set of search engines.

Context-aware computing for smart home environment

Context-aware computing has proven to be successful in collecting and understanding various sensor data. However, providing an intelligent service by exploiting the collected context data from heterogeneous sensors is difficult on smart home because it is a complex environment with various devices and appliances. In this paper, we propose a context-aware computing approach for heterogeneous smart home environments. The key idea in this work is to integrate large-scale home context information from multiple heterogeneous sensors. We first define a semantic decision by context-aware inference including rule, inference and pattern driven. Then, a designed architecture that manages home environment is developed between large numbers of heterogeneous information entities and enhances intelligence abilities. Using the established rules and inferences, the proposed method is applicable for intelligent home to further discover more useful representative activities and personalized services with inhabitant needs. 3D garment segmentation based on semi-supervised learning method

In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised learning method to simultaneous segmentation and labeling of parts in 3D garments. The key idea in this work is to analyze 3D garments using semi-supervised learning method which can label parts in various 3D garments. We first develop an objective function based on Conditional Random Field (CRF) model to learn the prior knowledge of garment components from a set of training examples. Then, we exploit an effective training method that utilizes JointBoost classifiers based on the co-analysis for garments. And we modify the JointBoost to automatically cluster the segmented components without requiring manual parameter tuning. The purpose of our method is to relieve the manual segmentation and labeling of components in 3D garment collections. Finally, the experimental results show the performance of our proposed method is effective. © 2015 Binary information Press & Textile Bioengineering and Informatics Society December 2015.

Clothing in vision plays an important role in many applications of digital clothing, virtual fitting, fashion design and manufacturing. The research of clothing in vision is full of technical challenges, such as background detection and features extraction. In this paper, we introduce the latest remarkable works of clothing in vision area, including clothing segmentation, clothing recognition and clothing retrieval. There are many remarkable advances on the basis of the predecessors' achievements in the three fields. Firstly, we provide an overview of the techniques for clothing segmentation and clothing recognition. Then, we introduce and analyze the representative works on clothing retrieval. Finally, we forecast broader application prospect and future research work of clothing in vision. © 2015 Binary information Press & Textile Bioengineering and Informatics Society December 2015.

Communication privacy and latency perceived by users have become great concerns for delay-sensitive Internet services. Existing anonymous communication systems either provide high anonymity at an expense of prolonged latency (e.g., mix-net), or offer better real-time performance by sacrificing the ability against traffic analysis attacks (e.g., Onion Routing). The emerging Software-Defined Networking (SDN) introduces additional challenges to communication anonymity, due to the existence of a centralized controller that has a global view of the entire network traffic. In this paper, we propose a new anonymous communication scheme for delay-sensitive services under SDN scenarios, which can simultaneously protect communication privacy and reduce the end-to-end latency. A self-adaptive method based on the mix-net framework is designed to dynamically modify the waiting threshold of mix nodes, which helps to reduce the communication latency. In order to preserve the degree of anonymity, the self-adaptive method is incorporated with a random walking strategy for packets forwarding. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results prove that our scheme provides a moderate degree of anonymity and effectively reduces the latency derived from mix-net by up to 50%.

Reducing the flow latency is of great importance in traffic management, which benefits both service providers and end users. Routing design and flow scheduling are typical ways to improve the flow transmission efficiency. However, existing studies usually consider them separately, due to the complexity of joint consideration. Here, we propose a latency-aware routing scheme with bandwidth assignment in the Software Defined Networks, which can efficiently reduce the flow latency with a moderate complexity, to combine the routing and scheduling together.

An environment of ambient intelligence or an ambient environment is an environment with intelligent applications able to adapt their behavior with the change of context. The ambient environments use many communicating objects;each one offers different and specific services. The majority of these services can perform only one specific task. The composition of services is then proposed to resolve the complex tasks. Multi agent systems underline the social capacities such as the communication, the cooperation, the resolution of conflict, the negotiation, the argumentation, and the emotion. They thus quickly became the principal paradigm in the ambient intelligence. In this context, we propose an adaptive multi agent system for automatic composition of services in an ambient environment. For each device is associated an agent. The set of the agents coordinate their competences taking into account the context in order to perform an activity. The system suggested is based on the Contract Net Protocol in which the agents exchange their proposals in the form of call for proposal. JADE platform (Java Agent DEvelopment framework) is used to implement our system. © 2014 ACM.

Detecting and monitoring the numerous household appliances in smart home is significant for home energy management, because the large various household appliances are complicated to identify and control. This paper proposes an intelligent unsupervised model for the classification and recognition of household appliances. The key idea in this work is to integrate appliance and activity recognition mechanism for effective management and operation within a domestic location. We first present the corresponding classification list of household appliances w. r. t their respective usage patterns and basic power factors. Then, the communication services among various appliances are established to recognize complex appliances and monitor the variation of their states. Finally, the proposed method is applicable for an inexpensive, unsupervised controlling of electrical appliances in a real-time way. Experimental results show that our method effectively provides a financially viable and easily applicable solution for gathering information and monitoring status of diverse household appliances.
