In this paper, a novel machine learning derived control performance assessment (CPA) classification system is proposed. It is dedicated for a wide class of PID-based control industrial loops with processes exhibiting dynamical properties close to second order plus delay time (SOPDT). The proposed concept is very general and easy to configure to distinguish between acceptable and poor closed loop performance. This approach allows for determining the best (but also robust and practically achievable) closed loop performance based on very popular and intuitive closed loop quality factors. Training set can be automatically derived off-line using a number of different, diverse control performance indices (CPIs) used as discriminative features of the assessed control system. The proposed extended set of CPIs is discussed with comprehensive performance assessment of different machine learning based classification methods and practical application of the suggested solution. As a result, a general-purpose CPA system is derived that can be immediately applied in practice without any preliminary or additional learning stage during normal closed loop operation. This paper presents a preliminary study on the use of machine learning-based methods to select the appropriate parameters of cascade filters in the analysis of brain signals recorded using functional infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), which shows the level of oxygenation in the brain and, unlike EEG signals (showing electrical brain activity), are less prone to potential interference, disturbances or artifacts occurrence.

The aim of this paper is to improve the automation processes of electrical power substations based on IEC 61850 standard, with the focus on data management related to data structure, path, and communication model. When modelling substations items a simple and clear approach is necessary to effectively match binary or analog data from the switchyard with the IEC 61850 data object model. The study is made by simply transforming data from a single line diagram and its functionalities into object model by explaining its hierarchy structure and how to use it to create an operational process interface. This possible through the three key components of the IEC 61850 standard: Client-Server based on TCP/IP MMS (Manufacturing Messaging Specification) which perform the monitoring and control functions, GOOSE (Generic Object-Oriented Substation Event) protocol used in applications between IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Device) like interlocking signals and trip messages and Sampled Values (SV) protocol used for fast transmission of analogue values over the network.

Identifying different vehicle types can help manage traffic more efficiently, reduce congestion, and improve public safety. This study aims to create a classification model that can recognize vehicle types based on the sound of passing vehicles. To achieve this, a database of raw audio files containing 1763 samples from two sources was assembled. The time-domain signals were converted to a time-frequency representation using the short-time Fourier transform to generate Mel Spectrograms. Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) were also generated using the discrete cosine transform. In our experiments we compared these approaches. Since the data was imbalanced we applied online augmentation. Based on the literature review, we chose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier because it is particularly well suited for analyzing large datasets due to its automatic feature extraction, parameter sharing and sparsity. The results showed that Mel Spectrograms were more effective for audio data preprocessing in this particular use case, achieving the highest accuracy of 0.875 and the highest f1-score of 0.877 compared to MFCCs. © 2025 IEEE computer Society. The paper describes few faults that can be present in Photovoltaic modules and presents results related to training and the testing of a mobile application designed for identifying faults in photovoltaic modules based on thermal images. The mobile application was trained and then tested with different individual and multiple faults. The mobile application can identify with high accuracy both the individual and multiple faults if the thermal images are preprocessed before to be uploaded for analysis.

A Unified Formulation of Geometry-aware Discrete Dynamic Movement Primitives

Learning from demonstration (LfD) is considered as an efficient way to transfer skills from humans to robots. Traditionally, LfD has been used to transfer Cartesian and joint positions and forces from human demonstrations. The traditional approach works well for some robotic tasks, but for many tasks of interest, it is necessary to learn skills such as orientation, impedance, and/or manipulability that have specific geometric characteristics. An effective encoding of such skills can be only achieved if the underlying geometric structure of the skill manifold is considered and the constrains arising from this structure are fulfilled during both learning and execution. However, typical learned skill models such as dynamic movement primitives (DMPs) are limited to Euclidean data and fail in correctly embedding quantities with geometric constraints. In this paper, we propose a novel and mathematically principled framework that uses concepts from Riemannian geometry to allow DMPs to properly embed geometric constrains. The resulting DMP formulation can deal with data sampled from any Riemannian manifold including, but not limited to, unit quaternions and symmetric and positive definite matrices. The proposed approach has been extensively evaluated both on simulated data and real robot experiments. The performed evaluation demonstrates that beneficial properties of DMPs, such as convergence to a given goal and the possibility to change the goal during operation, apply also to the proposed formulation. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

In this paper we propose an original distributed control framework for DC microgrids. We first formulate the (optimal) control objectives as an aggregative game suitable for the energy trading market. Then, based on duality, we analyze the equivalent distributed optimal condition for the proposed aggregative game and design a distributed control scheme to solve it. By interconnecting the DC microgrid and the designed distributed control system in a power preserving way, we steer the DC microgrid’s state to the desired optimal equilibrium, satisfying a predefined set of local and coupling constraints. Finally, based on singular perturbation system theory, we analyze the convergence of the closed-loop system. The simulation results show excellent performance of the proposed control framework.

The development of sensory substitution devices for visually impaired is one of the most complex interdisciplinary research areas. These devices exploit the ability of the brain to adapt, learn and process the lost sensory information (vision) using sounds and/or haptics. Starting from previously published research results, this paper explores the users' requirements and practicality aspects necessary in the design of sensory substitution devices for visually impaired. A new mobile perception architecture is proposed and preliminary results are presented.

We study a class of dynamical networks modeled by linear and time-invariant systems which are described by state-space realizations. For these networks, we investigate the relations between various types of factorizations which preserve the structure of their component subsystems’ interconnection. In doing so, we provide tractable means of shifting between different types of sparsity-preserving representations and we show how to employ these factorizations to obtain distributed implementations for stabilizing and possibly stable controllers.
