This paper presents the new laboratory test rig of the vertical axis flexible shaft supported by two active magnetic bearings. Behind the motivation of establishing this setup is the control of vibration modes of the flexible rotor - shaft assembly, while the rotational speed varies and the unbalanced mass on the whirling disc is introduced to the system. The proposed model is aimed to simulate real operation conditions of the rotating machinery with an applied external load, with a variable structure caused by a change of material properties of the rotor - shaft assembly, or due to a fault of some elements coupled with the rotor.

As the Industrial Internet of Things evolves, ever more data acquisition devices are integrated inside factories, silos, agriculture facilities, industrial facilities, cars and many other applications. One of the most common measured parameter, that also creates the most problems in specific applications, is temperature. There is an abundance of analog temperature transducers, available for engineers and researchers, with varying precision, temperature range, linearity, power consumption, and cost. Besides invasive temperature sensors and transducers, in recent years microwave based temperature measurement methods have been developed. The current paper presents one method of reading thermocouples without the need of a high resolution ADC or digital calculation of complex polynomial functions. The article is focused on the linearization circuit, measurement results, errors and presents a short application using NI WSN nodes as part of IIoT.

With the growth of the Internet, recommendations have become a fact of life and there is a big competition between companies to get as much market share as possible. This is achievable not only through fast to market solutions but also by constantly providing high quality services. Considering the speed of current technological advancements, it is impossible to conceive a world without some form of prediction. Traditionally, recommendations have been computed using the collaborative filtering method, but the growth of available information has pushed research into other directions such as content based, demographic based, utility-based, knowledge-based and hybrids. This paper provides an introduction to collaborative filtering and content based methods, describing the underlying concepts, and discusses possible improvements using overclassification. Individual results are presented and then compared with the overclassification approach.

While the bus load increases, the transmission of the lower priority messages may experience variable delays (jitter) or even may be unable to be transmitted. Even at maximum load, the transmission of such messages has to be guaranteed and the delivery time has to be determined with high precision. CANopen is an industrial event-driven network based on controller Area Network (CAN) protocol at the physical and data link communication levels. In a complex real-time application, each module can be independently developed, therefore, different processes need to communicate with each other safely and as quickly as possible. This paper proposes a flexible and efficient solution for handling the inter-process communication and for helping the programmer to quickly create modules that use the producer-consumer paradigm in order to streamline the data flow between the different processes. The communication is performed by means of a first-in first-out circular buffer which is kept in a shared memory area in order to allow quick data transfer between modules. The proposed solution allows the development of complex modularized applications suitable for real-time data processing. We describe the use of the proposed framework in a practical setup practice to as part of a software synchronization mechanism between two acquisition devices: a video capture device and an inertial measurement unit.

Simplified mathematical models that can describe the real behavior of a building with relative small errors can provide useful information about the best operational methods of the HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning) systems, energy demand for heating and cooling, etc. We developed a simplified mathematical model for computing the energy demand for heating and optimized it with a Genetic Algorithm, in order to minimize the error between the model and real data. The tested period (a month) showed that the optimization method is suitable for this type of applications and the relative error was 0.14 kWh.

In this paper a new pupil detection algorithm based on RANSAC procedure is presented. Unlike other similar algorithms reported in the literature, the proposed algorithm provides higher accuracy, low running time and operates properly in noise conditions and for variable illumination. This algorithm is used in the field of assistive technology in order to communicate with neuromotor disabled people by detecting their gaze direction, and can easily be adapted for other applications, such as PC control using eye-gaze detection.
